What is the best gas heater?
While an indoor gas heater might seem expensive initially, it’s cheaper to run than an electric heater, and great for medium to large rooms.
Firstly, check your home is equipped with the right gas source before you buy a heater: LPG gas or reticulated natural gas – this will need to be compatible with the model you have your eye on.
Next, decide whether you’d prefer a portable gas heater (unflued) or one requiring installation (flued). There are pros and cons of both.
Flued gas heaters: These use an attached pipe (the flue) to transfer carbon monoxide and other combustion gases outside. This makes this type of indoor gas heater safe, and well-suited to anyone with allergies or respiratory issues. Factor installation costs into your budget as well.
Unflued gas heaters: These vent some vapours back inside the home, but these indoor gas heaters are still safe, as gas levels are limited by government regulations. The main pro of unflued gas heaters is that you can move them from room to room. They’re cheaper to buy than flued models, and also have higher energy star ratings.
These are the main practical considerations when buying a new gas heater. Personal aesthetic preferences come into play, too. For example, you can get the look of an authentic fireplace with a gas log heater.
