Pros
$200 Travel Credit each year

0% p.a. on Balance Transfers for the first 12 months
Complimentary Travel Insurance
Add up to 4 Cards at no additional cost
Cons

Your $200 replacement to cut cost is a cheap reflection of AE. The application of the $200 credit is too restrictive I will not renew my membership for sure.

Amex platinum edge was good but is now a rip off
I was sucked in with the complimentary flight. Not a bad deal to compensate for thr high fees. Etc.. I also recomended the card to others. I now regret this now the complimentary flight wil be taken away and replaced with a pathetic $200 credit. This credit can only be spent on the Amex travel site that is over priced and only has full flight fare and expensive accomodation options. The card is now no better than anything else out there so take your business elsewhere is my recommendation.

Good value until 30/03/2017 when annual complimentary flight gets taken away
Intending customers beware ! Amex will reduce the complimentary flight benefit to a mere $200 travel credit p.a. Having been a customer for more than 25 years, I find this very disappointing. $200 doesn't get very far. In addition the membership fee is quite high. Will have to take my business elsewhere.

Engine Failure on Free Flight Offer
Note that several of the reviews below are positive based largely on the free flight offer. And up until now I would have agreed with them. But things have changed. The free flight offer has been withdrawn and replaced with a $200 credit. One reviewer notes his flight would have been $700, so his benefit is now effectively reduced by $500. Another that a flight would have $600, a benefit that is now reduced by 67%. And I've just priced (via Amex travel) my next booked free flight (yet to be taken) at $318, so with the new system I'd be $118 out...Read more
of pocket. What was a reasonable offset for an expensive card fee has now been arbitrarily, without discussion, and with a very short lead time, removed. You may want to think again about applying for this card. Also I had another issue earlier this year and received very unsatisfactory service. I moved to Amex because they had an email facility for customer service. But on this last issue they simply insisted (via email) that I call to receive an answer. The number supplied was the same number I'd unsuccessfully used before, hence the email :) It would appear that the customer service system has the wobbles as well.1 comment

Disappointing
Have been a customer for 13 years and have always been really happy with AMEX. Over the last few months have noticed that the service is not what it used to be and I was surprised that they are now using call centres in the Phillipines. Lost my prescription reading glasses about 4 weeks after I bought them. For the first time, I claimed using the Purchase Protection insurance. The AMEX insurer is Chubb. I received a phone call from them acknowledging the claim and they wanted to know if I had Home & Contents insurance and the company it was wit...Read more
h. Prior to giving out any information, I questioned them why, and I was told that if Chubb approves the claim, then they approach my insurer to recover some of the money that they have paid out. I was not very happy, told them so, and did not give them any information. A week later, I received another phone call, from the assessor who spoke down to me, as if I could not understand English. (I work in Finance). He explained that it is industry practice to pay these claims and then follow-up with the H & C insurance for recovery of the money paid out. This is absolutely ridiculous . My friend made a claim with an ANZ card and their insurer is QBE. There was no excess and there was no claim against their home insurer. I have again written to AMEX about this matter and am still waiting on a response. When I rang AMEX and asked to speak to a senior manager who handles the outsourcing of their insurance I was told I would have to put that request in writing otherwise a call would not be returned. Overall, very disappointing of a brand that was held in high regard.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Great Value for money if you know how to use it. Great Customer service from Amex.
Just love this card. For many years now I have used this card and felt it necessary to compliment American express for this wonderful product and customer service. The domestic flight itself is great value in itself and you recover the cost of the annual fee in that flight. This year as always we paid our airfares to USA AND CRUISE on this card because we get complimentary Travel Insurance and unfortunately had to cancel our plans due to the family illness.
Since we had already finalized our travel plans and paid in full we were charged heft...Read more

Business card that you can't actually use for Business
I was sold in the idea of a Platinum Business Card - to help my small business manage cash flow. they even sent me a remote controlled Ferrari - with no remote.
After a long and convoluted application process to get the card +$1,500 in annual fees, I finally got my card... with a $6,000 limit!!!! Mind you, I only found out the limit was $6,000 when I went to put a transaction through - it was very embarrassing.
At no stage in the application process did they tell me there was a limit that would be applied - let alone suggest that it wou...Read more
ld be as pathetic as $6,000 - 1/4 of the fee I am paying for the frigging card in the first place. This is no way helps my cash flow, I went to ANZ and got a Business banking credit card straight away with a limit of $20,000. Unprofessional process, no transparency, lack of understanding of SME's and their needs. Exorbitant fees for not much return.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Minimal Cover Travel Insurance - ask questions and read the fine print before travelling
I used my card to book a hire car at Seattle, the Amex travel insurance did not cover the hire car loss of personal items, notebook, travel documents and passport which was broken in to later . The Amex Travel Insurance cover does not activate unless you buy your air, train or bus ticket with your Platinum Card. You must keep all records and itinerary for claims. The Amex ACE travel insurance is value to a point, but does not cover any collision damage waiver claims whatsoever so is near useless for car rentals. I used another business card to...Read more
cover the Air Ticket so l could not make a claim. I have checked with all the Australian banks, the best card for travel is the National Australia Bank Platinum Visa Card, it covers all travel insurance and the rental car waivers as required as long as the value of the air, bus or travel ticket exceeds $500.00 and is purchased with the NAB PIatinum Visa Card. Check with National Australia Bank for their travel insurance conditions, I think you will get the best travel insurance value with National Australia Bank Platinum Visa Card.Similar opinion? Rubbish for 'free' travel insurance
Had this card for a few years, used it to book a holiday to the USA, spent over $10k on pre booked flights and accommodation and paid some surcharges as a result, but figured worth it due to the saving of insurance policy. Just before going, 're read policy and in fine print it states that you can't have redeemed any frequent flyer points outside of their points system towards your trip. Unfortunately we had used some Qantas points for about a 5% reduction in airfare so policy cover is now void. Had to buy separate policy for over $300. Since found out NAB platinum card only require that you spend $500 towards your trip to activate full travel policy. ACE insurance coverage is rubbish and full of fine print. Cancelling card as a result.

Waste of time
American express sent me a remote control car without a remote to use the car, they told me i would get a remote if i had a chat with them for 15 mins. I did this and still no remote. I dont actually want the car i just think it is a total waste that i now have to throw it out. What a terrible environmental statement this company must have.

Complimentary flight worth signing up for alone!
Signed up and got my AMEX Platinum Edge last week, charging a couple of items worth about $30.
My Partner had to urgently go interstate for travel, so called AMEX and in 6 minutes and 7 seconds (yes I checked) I had the flight booked in her name and was off the phone.
A $700 flight for ZERO.
As long as they keep this benefit they will have a customer in me.

Crap
I misplaced my credit card and so I called to report. Little did I know that it takes a few days to receive a replacement, I thought I would get a temporary number that I can use for an online purchase (overseas presale concert that only accepts Am Ex and without the tickets, I was reluctant to book my flights etc). The operator was unhelpful and told me I had to wait and because it was a Thursday, the replacement would not arrive until the following week.
The one time that I needed to use Am Ex since it isn't accepted in a lot of places, I couldn't use it so I cancelled the card.

Not worth the time of day
AMEX would have to be the WORST credit card out of the lot. They have no sense of customer service, they are arrogant, rude, unhelpful. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone not even my arch enemy. Stay away from this company!!! Stick with Australian brands linke Bankwest, Westpac, NAB etc.

Great card, complimentary return flight is well worth it!
I have been using an American Express Platinum Edge Credit Card for the last 6 months and have to say that the complimentary domestic flight from Virgin is definitely worth signing up for this card. Rang the number provided to book a return flight from Perth to Brisbane about two weeks before the Easter weekend. Same flight was at the $600+ margin when I searched on flight comparison sites. AMEX Travel team booked the itinerary straight away, no hassle, and I had an epic time over at Gold Coast. Thumbs up AMEX, you have one happy customer here! :)

Travel insurance experience
In a recent review I made the point that I did not think the Amex Platinum Reserve card is worth the expense. Part of the price of the card is the supposedly free travel insurance.
I recently made a claim. The claim arose because I had a previously undiagnosed medical condition that necessitated the cancellation of a cruise from Australia. The underwriter of the insurance is Ace, and Ace is the company any claimant will be dealing with. Amex have nothing to do with the insurance except using it as a marketing strategy. The assessment of cla...Read more
ims is done in the Philippines. I don't have anything against the Philippines but cardholders pay developed country prices for the card/insurance, but presumably Ace pay developing country wages to the assessors. I have a problem with this. The claim took somewhere of the order of 4 to 6 weeks to resolve (in my favour). The claim was initially knocked back. I gather from others this may be a standard practice on the part of the travel insurance companies. I persisted and had to provide three medical certificates from two different doctors, a detailed itineray (remember I was to have gone on a cruise), evidence that I was going to return to Australia (where I have lived all my life), the doctors had to provide a statement as to when the symptoms I had first occurred (I am not sure how this would be dealt with if one wanted to claim for breaking an arm), Amex statements showing I had paid all of the expenses associated with the trip with my Amex card, the name and address of the hotel I was to stay at (this was not part of the claim since the hotel reimbursed me for the accommodation costs), receipts from the travel agent (remember that I provided Amex statements) and so on. Evidently Ace do not have a template for what information is required on medical certificates - it seems that this is at the whim of the Filipino assessors. In the end I told Ace that unless the money claimed was in my bank account within 7 days of me providing them with the third medical certificate, I was going to lodge a complaint with the Financial Services Ombudsman. The money was in my bank account within 5 days. There are a couple of things based upon my experience to be alarmed about.1 comment
I should have added that I have been an Amex cardholder for 34 years, have made many overseas trips (paid for using Amex) and never made a claim up until this one.

Very Happy with this great card.
Had the card for over a year now and am delighted with the features and the customer service provided. The website is good, full of useful information and frequent flyer points are the real bonus. The annual fee is more than paid for by the free flight offer(with limitations). Check out the card BEFORE you get one, that way you want be disappointed if it doesnt give you what you are looking for. E.g Amex isn`t accepted everywhere and sometimes there is a surcharge when using it !!! We have a visa card that we always carry for this.......

Avoid - Dodgy travel insurance
You find out why travel insurance is free with the card when you try & make a claim, absolute disgrace the insurance attached to this card, cut a long story short: stuffed my leg first day of holiday, needed to go home as holiday couldn't go on, only received delay tactics by the insurance company, never got me home, spent 2weeks stuck in a hotel room arguing with them as they played games with excuses flights are full even though I could see availability online!, tried to claim when I got back, straight out denied, do not go on a holiday trus...Read more
ting this travel insurance by AMEX was the worst mistake I made, card benefits are ok, interest rate is very high, annual fee is going up to $199 in April 2015 but with some much needed benefits, personally I would avoid this card & go for ANZ PLATINUMSimilar opinion? Rude and terrible service even I have been amex customers for eight years
I would like to upgrade my card from gold card that I already had for 8 years to platinum edge and I fulfilled all criteria except that I have a $101 previous default from other company that occurred because I didn't receive the bill when I have moved house that have been paid in full but the taint on my credit record have to stay with me till another year and I have sent the evidence to Amex but they would not want to listen and they are very rude on the phone. Obviously they do not know how to retain customers or they feel that they are a very big company with so many customers they are no longer care about customer retention and good customer service.

Bad service for retirees
It seems that no matter how wealthy one is the AMEX system is geared to help those with high incomes not high wealth. With a higher % of retirees, many wealthy, in the population I hope they change or they will fade away.

Free Flight - Limitations
I have used this card for several years and find it very suitable. The only negative is with the 'free flight'. This is limited to major city departure points. I have two regional airports, Newcastle and Port Macquarie both serviced by Virgin however I cannot fly out of them. I can book a flight from Brisbane to Newcastle return, but I cannot book a flight from Newcastle to Brisbane return - seems Irish to me. So rather than give the flights away each year, I am giving the card away. i have raised the issue with them, however there appears to be no flexibility with it.
