Hey Bernard
Thanks for your reply, but I’m asking about the actual thickness of the fiberglass pool shell itself, I want to know if there is a difference in the shell thickness between the bottom or base of the pool compared with the kids play area and the spa or are they all the same and if they are not all the same I’d like to know what they all are. Because I think the average thickness is 4.2mm and I just wanted to know in the Brooklyn range which has a spa and a play area if it’s all the same or not and their measurements.
Thanks Marzenelz

What's happening with these previous comments around colour fading and white stains? Is this still occurring and what has been done to rectify the problem?

Help!.. I have same problem. Installed a 12 m pool with spa in Rockhampton & have also found a second customer with same problem. Blotchy white marks.. they look like water marks. Very visible on floor of pool and in particular the safety edge & steps. Pools are just over 12 months old. We both have enviro swim pool systems. Pool shop can’t help us, our water levels & readings are all fine... & it’s not calcium. The pool is not as sparkly anymore. I don’t know how to fix or where to go for help. Barrier reef pools do not seem interested in identifying the problem.

Unfortunately we didn't experience this but yes, I'd expect the Rep to contact you & rectify. When our pool was delivered & was left at an empty section opposite us. It was there for about 3 days & didn't sustain any damage.

I have nothing negative about Barrier Reef, they were brilliant throughout our process.

I hope I've been of help.

I am having my pool installed right now and concerned about the Gel coat issues on the page. How many, if any Gel coat warranty claims have you honoured, as it appears there are some unhappy customers.
One appears to have all of the water tests but still the warranty claim was not honoured. What must I do to ensure there are no issues and then you honour a claim should the Gel coat fail?

Thankyou for your question. Our warranty states that you must have your pool water tested monthly by a registered company and the records are to be kept. This is a requirement of our gelcoat suppliers. We will provide you with a pool guide booklet that explains in detail what the water chemistry level should be and the affects on the gelcoat if they are outside of these recommended levels. The booklet is based on the Australian Standards. You also need to be mindful of the filtration system that you are installing and any maintenance/calibrating requirements that might be applicable. I can not comment on specific cases reported on this site due to privacy. If you would like to discuss anything please feel free to email [email protected] and we will assist further.

Absolutely agree, don’t buy it. I had my pool tested monthly by the pool professional they recommended, problems after 18 months and still they won’t honour a warranty.

Part of a response from Barrier Reef Pools to Simone's review and comments is : " There is a possibility that gel coat will fade over a long period of time, but as you state your pool is only two years old it should still be in pristine condition"
I would like to ask Barrier Reef Pools what the definition of "a long period of time" is, and also why this is not disclosed during the consultation period?

2 answers
Barrier Reef Pools
Barrier Reef P.Barrier Reef Pools

Hi Lesley, any surface will change over time. Gelcoat will change over time whether it be from water chemistry levels or general age. Just the way a brand new paint on a car will not be the same over time. There is no "exact" timeframe as we do not and have no control over how consumers keep their water chemistry levels. You may want to refer to the Australian Standards that have been provided to you in relation to what the water chemistry levels should be maintained at. No surface is resilient to factors that may affect it over time.
Thanks

Hi Anonymous from Barrier Reef Pools and thanks for the reply to my question.
Somewhat contradictory answer and a bit nebulous too.
I'm still not clear. Again, in your answer to Simone.......... "but as your pool is only 2 years old it should still be in pristine condition"............. you are making a judgement here based on a timeframe, only the age of the shell. So then, regardless of water chemistry maintenance for 2 years the shell should be pristine? That's how I read it.
It surely should therefore still be in pristine condition after 8 years whilst maintaining the testing to Australian Standard, as that is what your warranty is based upon and basically what you've gone on to say in the answer. Are there honestly any of that age out there that are pristine?
Just trying to help some other readers who may wish to avail themselves of as much info as possible before parting with substantial funds.
By the way, FYI the Australian Standards that have now been provided were requested from your business just days ago. There was no standard provided for reference since handover years ago.
Thanks again to Anon

Hi Jason
Thanks for your question. Like any manufacturer there will always be issues raised by customers in relation to aspects of the product. We always try to resolve any customer issues that fall under our warranty terms. In the cases of fading shells or build up on the walls these all relate to water chemistry. We provide our new customers a pool guide booklet which is very helpful in understanding the effects of water chemistry on the gelcoat. We want our customers to be informed. We find that some customers purchase filtration that is marketed as "set and forget" but this is not the case, you still need to regularly test the water chemistry in your pool shell or issues will occur. In relation to cracking and hollow sounds, these can relate to installation issues. Your installer must be a licences pool installer and installed to Australian Standards. If you do have any further questions please feel free to email [email protected].
Thankyou

I have a Barrier Reef Pool the Opal design. I have noticed 2 holes/spots with in the pool that do not have a gel coat. The holes/spots are perfectly circumference and roughly the size of a 10 cent piece. One of them is about 150mm above the seat centred along the wall, the other is on the almost exact opposite side to the first one about half way from the water line and the base of the pool. What are these holes/spots??

Hi Mi Chelle, can you please email us at [email protected] with the above information and photos if possible and we will have our warranty team contact you. We will then be able to establish what these marks are, I don't believe they would be missing gelcoat but with photos it will make it easier to determine.
Thanks in advance

I have discovered another two holes/spots the size of a ten cent piece. That is 4 in total. I will email you however I do not have an under water camera to take pictures. And the gel coat is most definitely not on these spots.

As we are about to embark on a BIG outdoor entertainment area makeover project quoted at about $70K (including a Barrier Reef pool) these reviews are not only helpful, but worrying. Lots of helpful advice, recommendations and positive remarks from the company who will manage and complete the entire job, but when I mentioned reading this review about Barrier Reef pool shell thickness (4.2mm) we were told that it was the minimum Australian Standard and he assured me that he had visited the Beaudesert factory himself and that Barrier Reef ensure a minimum thickness of 8mm and strive for a 10mm (1 cm) thickness as a rule.

So - who's got the accurate information and spec's ??

I have not signed anything to go ahead with our project yet and will not do it if there is any nagging doubt or unverifiable information / mis-information going around ! We want to invest in an asset for our property - NOT a liability !!

HI Michael
As per our email today, the answer to your question above is below.
I have discussed the below with our Manufacturing Manager in relation to your enquiry. The Australian Standards for the average thickness of a fibreglass pool is as stated online 4.2mm, a lot of fibreglass pool manufacturers only strive to achieve this thickness. At Barrier Reef Pools we strive to build our pools to a minimum of 50% thicker than the Australian Standards on average but in a lot of cases we will actually be 100% thicker than the Australian Standard. We are the only manufacturer that would be happy to provide you with the weight of your pool after manufacture, this combined with the measurements of your pool would then provide you with the thickness of the pool shell. We believe that the Australian Standard is too low and that is why we pride ourselves on building the thickest product on the market and make sure that we exceed the minimum thickness standards.

We understand that this investment is a large decision that you need to make but I can not give you a definitive answer as to thicknesses as there are a number of variables that play a part in determining this value. We do however believe we have the best quality product in the market place and know that we exceed the Australian Standards and other manufacturers in relation to thickness.

Hi Michael
I think you are asking all the right questions and it would be great if you can clarify the thickness query. In 2013 our 12 meter pool developed a crack along the length of the base of the pool and whilst there are a number of factors that can cause this I was concerned about the thickness of the base of the pool. I also asked Barrier Reef pools for the minimum thickness for the base of the pool and they will only state an average thickness across the entire shell which in my mind is somewhat pointless. I purchased a calliper and measured a number of points along the crack and I can assure you that the suggested minimum rule thickness of 8mm to 10mm mentioned above is laughable.
I would not purchase another pool unless I knew the minimum thickness for the base of the pool.

Thankyou for your question, it would be best to go back through the installer of your pool and or the Builiding regulatory body in your state for clarification on this issue. Our warranty states that the shell must be installed by a licenced installer to Australian Standards.

Hi Tony, Thanks for your question. The Australian Standards for thickness of a fibreglass pool shell is 4.2mm and it is taken as an average of the overall entire shell. If you would like to contact us directly about this issue you can do this via our website or email [email protected]

I find it difficult to understand how 4.2mm can be an average of the overall entire shell. I would have thought there needs to be a certified minimum thickness that is resistant to a pre determined stress. Hence I need to know what the minimum thickness should be?
