I got told by the lady from Bernina not to use rayon thread and to use a thread stand positioned about 10 inches away from the machine apparently this stops the top thread from twisting I haven't tried this yet though I also use bobbin thread in the bobbin I found that helped

Why does the bobbin stops winding before its even half full. I have watched videos as well as reading the manual over and over and it will not wind a full bobbin.

I am enjoying my Chicago 7 but am interested in knowing if the lower tension is able to be altered? Does anyone know? It speaks about upper tension in my opinion but not lower in the manual

The machine is fussy, I hate it. But that aside, there isn’t a straight fwd answer. Check that you are using bobbin fill (I personally like Gutermanns). Rethread everything- it often looks like the machine is threaded properly, but it is not, or it slipped out somewhere. Rethread bobbin as well. Play around with the tension, some silk yarns like a tighter or looser tension. I do a test run with cotton thread before I use the embroidery thread. Sometimes the needle is damaged although it looks fine, so replace it. Are you using an emroidery needle? I use the ones with Bernina branding or Smetch. I also heard that the fabric, spray glue or stabilizer can cause this. Good luck troubleshooting every single time it happens, which is often.

Hi Sam, I also had the same problem. I resolved it by doing some research,

1. When you thread your machine do so with you needle and foot at it highest position not down.
2. For embroidery set your tension to 5 on the dial and back to 4 for normal sewing functions.
3. The embroidery foot that comes with the machine caused lots of issues for me, I purchased a darning foot with a spring from Elna.
4. If you are using thread other than what Bernina recommends then get yourself a pack of gold embroidery needles, here in a South Africa it only cost 85ZAR. Use a net around your thread so that it runs smoothly.

I have made these changes and have had absolutely no problems since. I wish I could send you before and after videos and pictures which I have taken but this site seems not to allow this. I hope it works for you. I absolutely love my machine now!

My machine keeps stopping and indicates bobbin needs filling. It doesn't. Have threaded and retreaded top and bottom and tightened foot screw just in case. I have changed the thread. Still no luck. Any suggestions?

Apparently the bobbin level is monitored by a laser beam which can be adjusted. It sounds as if yours is out of alignment and needs technical attention. I don't know of anything that you can do yourself. Hope this helps.

Has anyone had any problems with the Chicago 7 not recognizing the embroidery unit? My machine has stopped recognizing when the embroidery unit is plugged in. It's not under warranty so I have no idea what to do or how much it is going to cost to fix?

Yes I sent mine back to the shop, they said u have to clean the bobbin area after every single time it has been used it is a sensitive area for picking up dust. Hope that helps.

My husband bought me a bernette chicago 7 in November 2015. I received my product training, but I am having endless problems with the machine. Bernina blames the fabric, thread and needle (they rotate their excuses). Bottom line, I am stuck with it now. Please help - during normal sewing, it skips stitches and bundles the thread at the bottom of the fabric. On the embroidery unit, the needle does not stop at the top as it should and it makes loops at the top and bottom, also sometimes pulls the bobbin fill through the fabric to the top (but I did not adjust the tension). Can anyone help me please?

If you are a member of Facebook try going onto Bernina page and leave a message there.
Have you tried going to your local fair trading service in Australia its the Office of Fair Trading.
I hope it works out for you

There is definitely something wrong with the machine. The bobbin unit could need to be replaced and/or the tension is not right and/ or the timing on the machine is not working correctly. Does the place you bought it from have a bernina certified repair person? After all this trouble I would personal contact by phone the bernina company in the us and tell them what is happening and that the store is not servicing the machine. You need to be firm with them and the store about this problem and they should either find you a qualified repair person or send it to them in the original box and they will repair it. I have had a couple issues with mine and Brandon at the quilt company got replacement parts from Bernina and fixed the problem It didn't cost me anything as the machine was under warranty. Call bernina immediately [number removed]. be sure you are using bobbins for the Chicago 7 - they are different from the bernette bobbins.

I just want to state that if you buy a machine from a Bernina Dealer with a Bernina certified repair person on staff, You have the best of everything as they are qualified to know about issues with the machines and get them replaced if needed or repaired PROPERLY! Hobby Lobby and such store are just sales and cant service what they sell! you may have gotten a better price but you get what you you pay for. Go to a Bernina Certified Repair person and ask for help.

Hi, I've had my Bernette Chicago 7 for about 3 months now and I was wondering if anyone else is having issues with the embroidery module? My issues are:
- Machine not stopping when I press the pause/start button during an embroidery design
- Machine not stopping when I lift the sewing foot (I'm using the embroidery foot with the white arm)
- Machine not stopping when the thread is completely removed from the machine
- Needle not being clear of the hoop/fabric area before the machine starts to move and tries to keep sewing
- Embroidery module not moving to its new area and machine tried to sew over the hoop itself
- Stitch count not counting up even though the machine is still sewing
This is with both bought and built-in patterns. I was wondering if anyone else has had any of these problems and what the cause was? It would be good to go into my bernette dealer this week with a little more knowledge into this issue.

Teglian. I have checked mine and it seems fine. Perhaps the little sensor is faulty give your agent a call. I had experienced something similar to this with the buttonhole making. They had replaced the sensor it is working fine.

Hello Teglian I would take it back to the dealer and have them look at your machine the only issue I have had on some embroidery patterns is the machine keeps going even after its reached the count. I hope it goes welI for you

I bought this machine recently and hate it .. The embroidery does not stitch out evenly, the threads constantly break, the bobbin thread nests on every single design I have tried. I am not happy with machine at all .. I have a lovely old Janome MC 9000 that still embroiders beautifully after 20 years and I purchased the Bernette for the bigger hoop .. total waste of money as far as I'm concerned.. same old story .. what you pay for is what you get!
