JeffW, how's your Birko mixer going? Still recommended? I've been thinking of getting a Breville Bakery Boss for awhile now, but if the Birko is better quality (and hopefully cheaper to run at 300+W instead of 1000W) I'll probably fork out a few extra dollars for it.

Ben - it is great. The only part that wears out is the little belt at the top (it is technically a timing belt) so I get replacements for $12 from the local bearing and belt shop. They tell me that the local Smiths Chips factory use them too!

I use it primarily for mixing bread and pasta dough - but have also used it for mashed potatoes and meringue.

It was reccomended to me by an award winning baker for its action in mixing dough. I can't fault it really.

I can guarantee that it has no plastic gears - so I would check up on whether the breville, like other popular mixers has plastic gears, as they will fail if you try bread dough.

Good luck!

Thanks Jeff, I'll definitely consider it. There's not much info about these mixers online. Can't even find a video of one on YouTube, so your info is much appreciated. Cheers

It looks like it is 7 - 10 mm

The mixer is not like a domestic one, it has to have a minimum volume of material to mix.... for example it takes about 8 egg whites to work properly.....

Hope this helps...

Hey Jim, I order mine through a local electrical supplier who was on their supplier list. I have the supplier list if you want to email me. jmwecker at gmail dot com

Hey Jim, I might even have what you want, as I only needed one gear and you have to buy the full set, so I have quite a few spare (new) gears left over. Thx Jeff
