It's like a small car in a big shell
Easy to drive with its awesome power steering. My wife is a very short woman but she drives this car like a small sedan. The vehicle itself xdrive30d has a powerful engine and you can really feel the power. The seats are comfortable and the ride is smooth. The GPS screen is massive and ever since the first day we owned this vehicle, there has not been any issues.

A pleasure to drive!
The driving experience is absolutely brilliant! The car runs smooth and has many features like inbuilt navigation, TV, Radio, emergency contact services and etc. The X5 is a great car overall with a nice and stylish interior and a nice SUV outer body which makes it look a lot more elegant.

Excellent features and build quality
This is my first BMW, after driving Mitsubishi, Toyota and Mazda. The driving experience is a pleasure, and despite being a diesel has much more get up than my previous petrol Prado. Mine is a 7 seater, which is OK for children/teenagers in the back row, not so good for a full size adult. Whiie the white leather was a concern at first, it is easy to clean, and the instruments are well laid out. i really like the heads up display for speed and nav.
The service costs have been reasonable, and any non warrant parts have been purchased offline for much cheaper than the dealer.

Great when new, would not buy again
I've had my 2003 3.0D since 2007 with 100,000k on the clock, it now sit on around 300,000. At around 140,000k I replaced the turbo, a $5k repair, at the 165,000 the fuel pump went so another $3k repair bill, at around the 180,000 had to replace the transmission which cost just tad under $7k. When getting the vehicle serviced by BMW, be prepared for the costly exercise. Nothing comes cheap for this car. I personally replaced the whole suspension on the vehicle for a 1/10 the cost that BMW where going to charge as well as doing the servicing myse...Read more
lf. Also have replaced the A/C unit, door handle drivers side, window winder drivers side, expansion tank, power steering hoses, Steering joints and torsion bars, brake pads and rotors. You can learn all there is to know by googling what you need to do. The car is a nice vehicle inside and out, there is just way too much plastic on it, which as time goes by breaks, and as I said before nothing is cheap for this car, your best bet is to buy parts from ebay and do the job yourself saving yourself a fair bit of change. If your going to buy yourself one, don't buy 2nd hand as the running cost will hurt your wallet in more ways then one. If I had my time again I would of just brought a new one and traded it in every 2 to 3 years, but now I drive this old girl till she goes no more.
Purchased in May 2021.

I have a lot of fun to drive this car and BMW service is also excellent. And shape of the car is very attractive. The light is so bright at night.

DON'T BOTHER
This car was great until the kms crept up. Once it hit 200,000km then everything started breaking. Fair enough, the car's done a lot of kms, but the cost to replace the parts is insane! I've always serviced the car with a specialist repairer (not BMW as they charge like wounded bulls), and I've always looked after the car.
If you're looking for a great 4WD then I wouldn't say not to buy an X5 but don't buy one second hand if it's got a few kms on the odometer. They're just not worth the massive repair bills !!! It would be cheaper to buy a new Aussie made 4WD.

Awesome car!! No complications or complaints so comfortable style quality
Fabulous all round.. quality is execeptional
You won't die in a BMW solid as a tank, get in shut the heavy door.. you know your safe and secure unlike the other cheap SUV 4wd on the market . I brought a jeep and sold the jeep and went for the x5.. more luxurious

Still enjoy our x5
Our BMW x5 still is enjoyable to drive and is comfortable . Lots of nice features and air conditioning is nice.
Seats are comfortable and lots of legroom. Great performance on long and short trips and for daily driving to and from my work. Should last us for a while.

Awesome SUV - Love it!
Purchased a new 2016 X5 30D with M-Sport, panoramic glass roof and innovations package. Plus 5 year warranty.
Lots of cool features, great performance for a large car and very comfortable. Maybe too comfortable.
Love the active cruise control, head up display, lane departure warning, fuel economy and so much more.
Highly recommend this vehicle.
Previous car was a BMW E92 335i which was great apart from the rattly turbo waste gates.
Loved the car and the performance but the seat belt extenders were a bad design and as mentioned above, the turbos can be noisy.

Bought the BMW X5 six years ago brand new and...
The E70 model still stands as a modern machine. I still enjoy driving it to this day.
PROs: The power of the engine still runs like day number 1, the extra two seats at the back (customised to a 7 seater), the handy overhead display, and the parking cameras all around the vehicle makes parking so conveniently easy.
CONs: The warranty was for five years and I paid an extra one grand for a sixth year warranty service. Electronics started to fail just after the sixth year mark. Big coincidence maybe. The electronics that started failing/pla...Read more
ying are the left side side mirror which doesn't cave in when I push the button; the left rear brake light; the occasional error message on the screen saying that the rear boot camera is faulty. All in all, the E70 X5 is an awesome beast. My wife is a petite/small woman and she even says that when drives it it feels like she's driving a small vehicle instead of a 7 seater. I would highly recommend BMW as a whole and I would take my CONs above as bad coincidence timing.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

What a Brillant SUV!
We received our new BMW X5 xDrive30d the weekend before last. We cannot stay out of it. The gadgets are endless and I particularly like the heads up display. The interior is typically luxurious, but to be expected from BMW. We expected that being a diesel for it to rattle and be sluggish like a truck, but you can barely tell its a diesel from the outside when it is running and can't tell at all from the inside with the cabin closed. The fuel economy is extraordinary with the first tank doing an amazing 1150 kilometres for the first 85 litre ta...Read more
nk. The size hits in you the face the first time you try to park it (or maybe its fear of scratching the all plastic guards), but then of course the car helps you out with all of the parking aids and cameras swinging into action and the are genuinely amazing. But the thing the surprised us most was the performance. 0-100 in just under 7 seconds for a SUV of this size is swift in anyone's book. I can't imagine what the larger engine sizes would be like. We are so glad we upgraded to BMW after test driving many of the cheaper brands. It seems you do get what you pay for.Purchased in February 2021 for $85,000.00.

Faulty Bmw x5 4.4l
BMW X5 e53 2002 model terrible vehicle beautiful inside out faulty every else even Bmw cannot find the problems transmission blows up it doesn't scan on computer or warn you it just tells you all these other things on the computer system instead of saying gearbox is damaged engine failures ABS unit and more all these other files come up on the scan tool but the gearbox which is rubbish as it doesn't tell you the exact thing it's wrong with it what is the point having all these wiring looms and computers but it won't tell us what the exact thing...Read more
is even the light bulb will warn you of ABS unit broken or the transmission is broken so load of crap Bmw really needs to do something about their vehicles as you yourself can't even find the problem when you go to a dealer they tell you to get rid of the vehicle and instead of fixing it. Thanks a lot BMW for your help. Off not doing anything. If people say this is the older vehicle you should think twice you should get rid of it or scrap it so people don't get stuck with rubbish so don't anyone think of saying it is like 16 years old you've got car it's in it's 50s and 60s still running perfectly this is what rubbish computers and things do to your car and make it difficult for anyone to fix it including mechanics.I have found more problems i'm finding it hard to find bolts for the transmission i can't believe that no one can sale me the write bolts for this BMW even has to order it in from overseas it takes 2 to 3 week to get it in bloody jock. May 21st 2017 Update: Stay home Beamer This BMW is a big problem anything it goes wrong it's all connected up to the computer is the biggest garbage of vehicles that they made gearbox goes ABS units go lot of things start breaking down no one knows what's the problem is. You could have a light blown and your car doesn't move as the gearbox tells it that the gears are not working properly because of a stupid brake light is not working or the brake sensors or the abs unit battery the dashboard there is so much to put I can't put everything on here but just because of a little electrical fault your gearbox will not go in gear or not move. I have installed recondition like brand new $5,000 gearbox and still sitting in my garage 8 month do not buy this vehicle it's a load of crap you should put it to get it crashed if you have one that's what it's good for I'm now getting it towed to the wreckers as I'm so sick of the bull crap it looks like brand new and perfect vehicle body on a scratch on it, it deserves to be in the crusher.Similar opinion? A great car to drive but don't expect happy sailing as it ages.
I have owned a 2006 3.0D for almost ten years and it's been a pleasure driving it. The only problem is that while it is a great car it comes at a hefty cost once it ages, for mine from year 6 of ownership, things will start to become worrisome. The car will still drive beautifully but under the bonnet a lot of things will break causing a domino effect. The sad thing is the car is made with some complex engineering that it will require the mechanic a lot of time to figure out what the problem is and the dealer charges hundred of dollars per hour...Read more
just to diagnose the problem. During years 6 to 9 I had the DDE module replace (have to be ordered from Germany), battery replaced twice, balancer and air conditioning unit including condenser and auxiliary fan plus diagnosis and labour all costing almost $20,000. For this money one have to decide whether it's really worthwhile to continue owning it. The funny thing is when I wanted to trade in for a new BMW, the trade in price offered by the dealer is a mere $8000. I understand that trade-in prices will always be low but what BMW is saying is that once the car gets old it really isn't worth much simply because maintenance cost will be enormous and simply not worth keeping. So my advice is enjoy it for 5 years and get another one.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Still loving my 5 series diesel wagon.
Just thought it worth saying that this car is still as good as the day I bought it. Amazing fuel consumption. Sometimes I forget about it all together. It's weeks between fills. It is very comfortable to drive. Some people find the controls a little odd, but I'm used to it. Still looks good after 4 years. This car just makes me happy.

Where to start? Let me first start by saying I absolutely love this car.
However I purchased it having traded my 2002 CR-V. I liked the additional room and capacity; the 3.0i 6 engine was a gem and I really liked the way it drove, handled, braked, etc. It was an ex-exec lease vehicle and had full service history, including the replacement of some components.
Within two weeks of ownership, it developed a radiator leak. It was also due for a service - something I hadn't noticed initially about the LED service interval read out. Anyway, the ...Read more

Disappointed
Disappointed with the X5 and found that whilst the engine was responsive and fairly fuel efficient (when it was working) that the leather seats were really quite uncomfortable with no adjustable lumbar support and no heated seats. Yes mine was a base model 3.0d but these should be fairly standard features on a $100k car. I am pleased that I took out the (what I thought was expensive) extended warranty on this car when I bought it from the BMW dealership and I used it heaps. The engine broke (timing chain) at 100,000kms and took BMW 3 months to ...Read more
fix (during which time I had a loan car but not an X5), two wheel bearings needed replacing at over $1000 each (and was told this was normal wear and tear) and I had a repeatedly faulty I-drive module (also replaced) and a faulty electronic park brake (also replaced). The car looked great and drove well on the road, but as soon as you venture onto grass or off road, you have no chance, as the computer makes all the gearing decisions and there is no way of manually selecting 4wd, hi/lo ration or diff lock, NOTHING. I got stuck on my lawn with the caravan on and had to use maxtrax to get me out. I would not buy another one of these and cannot recommend the model I had. I sold mine before it ran out of warranty as I just daren't keep it for fear of more expensive repairs.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Smooth drive
At the start of this year I thought I tried BMW because Toyota had failed me. It is fantastic and always drives a smooth as a car can get. Some cars drive like trucks but this BMW is as sensational as you can get. The service is great and they are always happy to give a helping hand. So Toyota is my 1 stop car shop for everything cars!

Great drive
I have just reluctantly sold my 2012 X5 with sports/innovations packages. Car purchased new in July 2012. (This was my second x5 with first being 2009 model with same engine but with 6 speed auto which was nowhere near as good as the 8 speed). Excellent drive with crisp handling for a car of this size and weight.very comfortable long range tourer but ride a bit rough on secondary roads due to sports suspension and low profile runflats. Have had no real problems with either x5 with servicing covered under service package which I recommend if available. Very professional treatment from the service team at Westside BMW who I would recommend highly.

Great car
Bought my e53 x5 facelift in January 2011 with 89k on the clock. Fully loaded, Still going strong . Now on 119k.
The only down point on this I had in the 1st 8months was the amp in the boot, (common fault ) damp so had it sent away from a company on eBay 24hr turn around, £220 not a problem since,
Love this car has it caused me no problems and does everything I ask it to.
Flies through every MOT.
Service is reasonable at local garage..
2 years time I'll but the upgrade one, not to keen on the new x5 on the shape .

I love my black X5 40D 7 seater, bought new 11/2010 ex demo.
Overall an excellent good SUV. Much better than my previous X5 which I had for 7 years. The 40D is Expensive to buy compared to other SUV's, but its my 6th BMW so I am hooked on the product.
My X5 40d diesel now May 2015 has 48000km. Gets better with age, Apart from my from 20 year old 318 Signature, this X5 is on par as the best BMW that I have owned. Pity about the very harsh run flat tyres. A feature that will probably nearly stop me from buying another BMW if it has RFT's.

cceptable for a heavy vehicle. The Professional GPS is poor, it is grossly inaccurate because severely outdated - the upgrades are a RIPOFF without any guarantee that they are really upgraded. (Portable plug in GPS units at a $100 are superior.) BMW can't sort out rear end rattles satisfactory but after 4 years I have given up.-I am used to them< A shame for a$145000 vehicle>. So far it has been very reliable. Service people at Canterbury are very good and they treat me well- I suppose as a customer of over 25 years I should reasonably expect it. Servicing cost are over the top similar to other prestige motor cars. Brakes and the likes can be serviced at other reputable mechanics with BMW parts at 1/2 the price.Similar opinion? My BMW X5 3.5 D E70 XDrive MY 2009 has just completed 150,000 km and has a big end bearing and con rod failure in No 3 cylinder . It was bought new and has been serviced by BMW all of its life .Prior to this happening it was making a squealing noise for a few seconds when cold and the particulate filter light warning came on. I reported this to BMW and they changed the glow plugs but could not identify the cause of the squealing . I expected this engine to last at least 300,000 kms if not more. Has anyone else encountered a big end bearing failure ?
