We have had one of these systems for years. Just lately when you have a shower the hot water cuts in and out. The shower goes hot and then cold. When watching the unit the light actually goes off and then you can see the gas start. What should we do?

Electronic Highflow 21e

Hi,
My Bosch hws turns on, but the water stays cold. I’ve had this issue before and by turning hws off at power it usually works. I’ve checked and in fact changed to a full gas bottle, (gas stove working fine this whole time.) checked power point that there is power to it (hair dryer works fine).
You can hear the how the system goes on... and water run through, but I don’t and cannot hear the pilot light start up like other times. System is only about 5 years old and serviced regularly.
Can you help me please?

Hi Danny, you'll need to check if your gas and water supply valves are fully open. Additionally, if your water supply temperature is high, it's possible for the water temperature to be higher than what is set on the controller. If you need further assistance, please get in touch with us at 1300 30 70 37 any time between 6:30AM and 7PM (AEDT) so that we can better assist you there.

we have the Highflow 21e, using bottled gas. Because the house has been vacant from time to time we turned off the gas bottle and turned them on when we were there and it worked ok. However, last time we turned them on the hot water service did not come on. Can you help?

Bosch Hot Water & Heating
Robert B.Bosch Hot Water & Heating

Hi Lesley, we're sorry to hear about the difficulties that you're experiencing with your unit. There may be no hot water service due to the gas or water supply valves not being fully open. Alternatively, there may not be enough gas in the tank, if your other gas devices such as your stove also aren't functioning, then this will most likely be the reason.

If not, could you kindly give us a call at 1300 30 70 37 any time between 7:30AM to 6PM (AEDT) on a weekday and we will assist you there.

Thanks Robert. It wasn't a shortage of gas, but we were able to get it working after locating the power point and switching it on and off. That was the advice you gave to someone else on this page.

Ten years is not a bad innings for an on demand heater. You will have to take the cover off if you want to have any chance of identifying the leak. However, if the 10 year warranty is still valid then start looking for a plumber who is familiar with this unit before touching anything.

I assume your heater is a Bosch highflow (not highflier) 21e. Try disconnecting the electrical plug to the heater for a minute or 2. If the code comes back then check website -

Otherwise you will need a plumber. Make sure the plumber is familiar with Bosch water heaters before employing.

Hey, just moved into a house with one of these hot water systems. Initially the system didn’t seem to be working, so I think I’ve reset it, which seemed to prompt it to fire up and start delivering hot water. However, now it seems to want to shut off after a minute or two post each reset meaning the hot water isn’t on long enough to actually make use of it....

Initial thought is lack of water pressure or water flow. Are you turning the water on full? Do you notice that the flow of water drops off when the heating stops?

2 answers

Chris

You don't say what the temperature is. Hot water temperature coming out of the heater should be 55ºC. There are no knobs on the heater to adjust that, a controller allows you to set a lower temperature than 55ºC. You can change a jumper setting within the heater to reset the temperature to 65ºC but you need to consult the manual to do that.

Bosch Hot Water & Heating
Robert B.Bosch Hot Water & Heating

Hi Janette, we're sorry to hear the difficulties that you're facing with your unit.

If the water is not hot enough, you'll need to check if the gas and water supply valves are fully open.

Please note that the YS2170RA5 is a 50 degree limited unit, the temperature at all hot water outlets will not exceed this temperature.

If you are still experiencing difficulties with the unit or would like further assistance, please get in touch with our friendly team by calling 1300 30 70 37 any time between 7:30am and 6:00pm (AEST) during the week to arrange for assistance from one of our consultants.

Electronic Highflow 21e

What is the lowest flow of water before the gas ignites ? My system will not ignite until it flows at 20 seconds per litre. Is this normal ? We only have a low flow of hot water when we have a warm shower & the hot dies off unless we run another tap running lightly at the same time.

Forgot to mention the heater is a Bosch 21E

Chris
Chris

I don't know the minimum flow rate but your detail is interesting. Having to run another tap is interesting - are you on mains water or a tank with a pump? You don't mention whether the problem occurs when adding cold water to the mix. May I suggest adding a controller, either a Bosch MAIN CONTROLLER YPRM67XBN or the similar Bathroom Controller YPRS67XBN. They connect with 2 low tension wires so you should be able to install it yourself. With a controller, you select the water temperature required (55ºC down to 38ºC). The cold water tap is not needed to adjust the shower temperature. This means not having to turn on the cold water that may affect the hot water flow.

Ken 7
Ken 7

G'day Chris, we are on mains, we don't use much hot water in the shower, a bit more than a trickle, and we turn on the hot first, then use both taps to regulate the temperature. The main controller sounds interesting. I'm looking into them if I can't get any satisfaction here. We might just be using too little hot water to activate the ignition ?

Sounds like a faulty component. I guess there is no Main Controller connected that allows you to set temperature. A controller should give error codes when there is a fault which would give a clue.

Electronic Highflow 21e

We have just moved in and recently had the gas bottles changed over, they were left off for the day as we were at work and now we have no hot water. We have a 21e highflow bosch system and I can not find a switch, a plug or any box to fix the hot water. How do we get the water back on? Gas to our stove works fine.

3 answers
Chris
Chris

I am confused. The 21e relies on electric power to run this gas heater. So there should be a power cord coming out of the bottom of the heater connected to a power point. The most likely problem is air in the gas line inside the heater that must be pushed out. This would mean persisting with turning the hot water tap on and off and maybe turning the power point off and on too.

Maybe there is some air in the water pipe as a consequence of the repair. The heater will not work until the air is expelled. Perhaps persist with turning the hot water off and on. And try turning the power off and on to the heater after each time.

I can only suggest there maybe some air in the line between the gas bottle and the heater burner. If the burner does not ignite the sensor that must be hot from the burner flame will not permit gas through for except for a short time (it's kind of a gas safety switch). Try persisting by turning the water on and off several times. If you had a remote controller it would give you a fault code.

Bosch Hot Water & Heating
Robert B.Bosch Hot Water & Heating

Hi Jae, we're so sorry to hear about the issues you've been experiencing. As Chris mentioned, we recommend that you try and "restart" the unit. To do this, turn the hot water tap that's closest to your hot water unit on full and leave it running. Once done, go to your unit and turn the cold water inlet off (this is usually the second valve from the left underneath your unit). Then turn the power point to the hot water unit off and wait for around a minute. After waiting, turn the power point to the unit back on and turn the cold water inlet back on. Check your hot water tap and if this method doesn't work, please get in touch with us at 1300 30 70 37 any time from 8am to 6pm (AEDT). We recommend that our units are serviced every two years and we can get you in touch with a local service agent to arrange for a service if it's required.

The flow of water must be enough to trigger the heater to continue it's operation. Has the flow of water coming out of the tap diminished? If not then I suspect the heater has a sensor problem.
