Electronic Highflow 21e

The water in the shower is too hot. We don't have a slower flow shower head (my hubby hates them & bought a strong flow one). We have been ok over winter as we adjusted our cold water to reduce the temperature of the water.
Can we decrease the hot water our selves??? It's summer now & all we have is cold freezing water or stinking hot. Dreaming of a tepid shower. After reading comments I'm afraid we are going to wait until winter before temp is ok again. Help!!!

Hi, I had a similar problem. Since these units work on a “pressure drop” to control the temperature rise it’s important to ensure FULL FLOW is available to the unit, don’t be fooled by high pressure as that will change with demand, the pressure drop has to occur in the unit. Check your factory fitted strainer first for debris. I checked mine and found what looked like some scale from the copper pipes - cleaned it but no luck. I conducted some time trials from different outlets as the hot water was alway inconsistent - on / off. Whilst during these trials l could hear a high pitch noise from my inlet piping - not normal, I tried to isolate by the supply tap but unsuccessful and had to isolate the house. On removing the pipe I discovered a lot of foreign material plugging the flow. The material turned out to be the taps washer which had disintegrated and was causing a pressure drop at the fouled point and not in the unit, the unit saw very little pressure drop due to the restriction. Simple fix - reseat the tap and install new washer -$1.50 - flush all the line to the strainer and now consistent adjustable hot water

Hi I have a 21 e high flow natural gas system and I get about 30 secs of hot water then it cuts out. I checked the pilot light and it cycles on and off and eventually does not reignite. Any suggestions?

Hi Aron
If this has just started after a time of reliable operation then first I suspect it is the water flow sensor, I can only suggest you turn off the power and check and clean all the push on connections, if that doesn't work you will need to get a service person. Check my previous posts for more info.

No. Sounds like you have a gas leak . Call a plumber as soon as possible to have it checked out . Safety first . You can rub soapy water on the connection points of the gas pipe . If it begins to bubble you have found the leak .

My water heater was working fine. My wife was running the hot water doing the dishes, when the water just stopped running. I noticed that the remote control indicator was flashing with the number 16 on the display. I turned the remote off and on again and things seem to be normal, but I don't like unusual....can anyone explain what went wrong and more to the point is it likely to reoccur?

I would call a gasfitter. If you call Bosch they will direct you to approved repairers in your local area. We recently had a problem with 21e sounds similar to your problem. We needed to reset system to get it to work. Gasfitter found faulty part. $205 including labour. I cant remember the name of the part.

If it is only in the shower you have a restricted shower. There is not enough flow through unit to maintain combustion.

We installed a bosch 21 e gas instant hot water unit approx. 5 years ago, for a 2 person house. The unit supplies kitchen, laundry and two bathrooms. So far it's not missed a beat and we would be happy to buy another. It does however have one fault in that it will suddenly run cold but only in the ground floor bathroom which is only 2 metres from the heater, the upstairs shower has always been o.k. I suspect it due to the shower head, so which shower head is the best for this type of heater, a low flow model, say 3/4 litres or a 9 litre one? Many shower heads are now marked not for instant. Hotwater services your advise would be appreciated

I use a 9L standard shower head and it works fine with the flow restrictor intact. Any less than that and I don't think the hot water flow would be enough to start the flow ignition in the hws unit.

Electronic Highflow 21e

Hello, We have a Bosch 21e less than 2 years old.

Our issue is the unit runs hot water for a few minutes (variable) before the hot water ceases and the water just runs cold. There is a "90L" code showing on the control pad. Our plumber and gasfitter (installer) said it is an error code but does not know what it means. He tried cleaning the filter and increased the gas flow from the regulator. The water for 8 minutes with no problems immediately after this, but this evening the shower turned cold after just a few minutes, with the same error code.

Please advise what the error code means and strategies to address?

Thanking you in anticipation of your assistance.

I had a similar problem and it seems that the water flow rate should be 9 litres per minute.
I removed the water saving device from the shower head and the problem has been totally solved.
There may also be a device in the flexible hose if fitted.

Hi Craig,

Many thanks for taking the time to submit your query.

Our Highflow range is an electronic ignition hot water system, which means this unfortunately does not have a Pilot in which you can manually ignite.

We advise you contact our Customer Service Centre on 1300 30 70 37 or alternatively via email [email protected].

Our team will be able to assist you with the issues you are currently experiencing with your 21e.

How does I reset the water heater to my bosch 21e system? I ran out of gas turnt it over to the full bottle and opened the gas bottle. I read the manual and it says the water heater will need to be reset.

I am not a plumber or gas fitter and mine are Natural Gas, so the only thing I can suggest is turn it off at the power point for about 5 minutes and then back on.
Good Luck

Bosch Hot Water & Heating
Robert B.Bosch Hot Water & Heating

Hi Rachel,

Many thanks for taking the time to submit your review for your Bosch Highflow 21e.

As outlined in the manual, the unit will have to be reset upon switching the gas supply. In order to do so, you must switch off both the gas & water supply to the unit whilst having your tap inside running then switch both the power and water supply back on.

However, you may have to do this more than once in some circumstances.

The only other alternative we recommend in order to avoid doing this every time you run out of gas is to look into the options of installing Bosch Temperature controllers.

This will allow you to reset the unit directly from the controller, additionally our controllers also display error codes to assist with diagnostics when experiencing difficulties with the hot water unit.

If you have any additional questions regarding our Hot Water Units or Controllers we encourage you to contact our Customer Service Centre on 1300 30 70 73 or alternative via email at [email protected].

Hey there,

I am not a Plumber (second person who thought I am) and would not know what the fix is but if it were my unit, 10 years of service is fab in my opinion, I would just replace it with a highflow 26e if the remote controller is the same :)

Thank you for your answer house husband. That's what I thought too. By the time I found a new replacement ( a Rinnai this time ) I reduced the temperature from 50 to 47 degrees and it works perfectly - maybe it was overheating at 50 degrees. The new one sits in the garage until the old one konks out completely. 007

Electronic Highflow 21e

Why does my Bosch Highflow 21e often not heat water when I get home from work? I have had this problem since installation several years ago and it's driving me crazy. The unit was replaced once and a Bosch technician has been out to look at it and was no use whatsoever. I was told to turn the power and the water on and off. This works sometimes but never on the first try. It's now 10.55pm and I've been turning the water and power off and on since 8.45pm and still don't have hot water. I was told that it might be a pressure problem but the water pressure is very strong and I don't have water-saving devices on any taps. The water pressure is no different on the nights it works to the nights it doesn't. Sometimes it will go for a month or so and be ok, last week there were three nights in a row without hot water. I can't afford to replace the system right now and I refuse to pay through the nose for people to come out to tell me they can't help. Please tell me what I can do.

Hi, we have a 21E. It's worked fine for a couple of years, but we now get the problem of water going cold.Had it checked, was told to open up hot tap full and adjust cold.Dont want it on full bore, too much water wastage.and why would it only start doing this after 2 yrs?

3 answers

Cyclops - I am sorry but I cannot help you with that problem, I can say that my system is only about 1 year old and since your post, my hot water is also going cold unless I have it on full stream water. So if you happen to find the solution I would also like to know why this happens. Many thanks

Hi Cyclops - I too have no answers for you, our system is going on 1 year old now and we constantly had cold water issues and I was told that you had to have a certain number of literes per second going through the tap and the only way to regulate my water was to turn the tap fully on. I agree it is a waste of water but if you want a nice shower that is all you can do. Personally I wish I had all this information before we got this system as I am very unhappy with it.

do you need the flow rate adjusted maybe? if not then have your unit checked by a bosch service plumber for debree or spider web in the pilot light pipe, can cause the flame to be off target.....

We have a 14 month old Bosch 21e instant HW system which works effectively MOST of the time for the en suite shower. Occasionally, not so, and ignition ceases within half a minute or so. Fortunately, we have a visible controller in sight of the en suite and if you are alert you can see the red ignition light extinguish. This means that you get a 20 second advanced warning that the hot water will run out. There is a restrictor in the shower head but there is still consistently a 6 litre per minute outflow. Bosch's own online specification talks of a minimum requirement of 2 1/2 litres per minute. Am I reading this right? If not, before I remove the restrictor, where does my 6 litres per minute out of of the shower head stand with their requirement? Lee.

If Bosch are claiming and min 2 1/2 litres per minute that doesn't sound right. In my experience you want a flow pressure at least 9 l/min from any outlet.

Thanks everyone, after I put these questions I bit the bullet and removed the restrictor washer and the problem's solved. Lukewarm showers down to 37 degrees (in the hot weather) not previously experienced. Lee.

Electronic Highflow 21e

We have a 12 month old Bosch 21e instant HW system only a couple of metres from our main en suite shower. The system works most of the time but occasionally cuts out within a couple of minutes. The temperature controller is in view in the en suite so that if you are alert you can see the red "ignition" warning light extinguish, and know that the h.w. will cease shortly. The shower head has a restrictor, however despite this, the tested & consistent water output is 6 litres per minute. Bosch's on-line specification talks of a minimum 2 1/2 litres per minute. Am I reading this right? If not, what should safe output be, before deciding to remove the restrictor, which seems at odds when the system works effectively most of he time. Lee.

Sorry I can't be of any help whatsoever on this.

Saint Just

Yep - pull out the flow restrictor in your shower and it'll work fine. It's not a Bosch issue, it's based on the flow pressure and every instantaneous has this issue. You can buy flow restrictors at 6 l/min, 9 l/min or 12 l/min at most plumbing suppliers. Maybe try the 9 and then the 12 if you want to be real conscience of your water usage.

softas35
softas35

See my answer below, pity about extra water usage but it won't be too much of a problem because we only take short showers. Thanks Saint Just.
