Worked great for a while...
I bought this ice cream maker just before Xmas. The ice cream was fantastic for the first few goes. Now it seems to keep stopping after a few minutes and claim it's ready. We can't get it to go for longer than a few minutes at a time, so the texture is never right. I have no idea why it worked so well for a short while, then suddenly went funny. I normally am a great fan of Breville products, but this one is very disappointing.

Very Disappointed
Even after reading the many negative reviews of this product we purchased the Ice Cream maker from JB Hi-Fi yesterday with much excitement. We were really looking forward to the upgrade from the manual unit we've had for a while. We expected that the negative thread of comments were because customers with negative experiences are more likely to leave comments.
Even after two hours of churning, the unit had not lowered below room temperature. The Pre-Cool feature did nothing (make some noises for 15 minutes or so then beeped and said it wa...Read more
s ready at 30C). Calling Breville was a waste of time, the support agent knew nothing of this unit and wanted to walk through the manual (we knew more about it than they did). It's clear there is a widespread problem with this unit that has not been addressed as there are other people on this thread with the same issue. Its also clear that the after sales support is not adequate. I do not recommend purchasing this product or any other Breville product.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

My friends love me
I've been using this machine fairly regularly for the past three years and it's been great. My auto dial has not broken and it's still functioning normally. In fact, I have never used the manual timer, I just set it to the hardness I want and let the machine do the rest. A particular hit with my friends is Nutella gelato. They all ask me how I get the great consistency.
One issue I have had is when I try to churn a new ice cream base directly (or even up to an hour or so) after the previous one. The machine seems to get confused and will kee...Read more
p on churning the second one indefinitely until you manually turn it off. It seems to need at least two hours or so to completely return to room temperature and somehow reset itself. Other than that, I love this machine and would definitely recommend it for serious ice cream makers/lovers.1 comment

Great but spare part
I have used the Breville Smart Scoop BC 1600 for about 12 months but have stopped now because I cannot find a spare part that is needed for the operation of the Smart Scoop. Its my fault for replacing the bowl on the spindle in a clumsy manner, I or one of us in the family has damaged the seal or neoprene cast 'o' ring which seals the shaft from the bucket at the base of the shaft its not circular in x section but wedge shaped in x section.
When I ring to buy the part no one knows what I am talking about.

Hi Scab - have you taken the machine to a service agent? If you call customer service during business hours on 1300 139 798 they can advise your nearest agent. Thanks, the Breville team
No - as I live in a country outside Australia but the part is easy to slide on to the spindle or shaft - I just cannot get the part - if you could identify the part name and no. I would be very grateful

Not bad but a couple of concerns
I have had my icecream machine now for a few months, it makes beautiful salty caramel and also honey icecream, lovely and creamy smooth. I have made the strawberry icecream 3 times now and each time it has fatty buttery lumps throughout, I cant understand this as I follow the recipe exactly! I also am concerned that it gets very noisy towards the end of the churns and slows right down to the point where it looks like its going to sieze up. I hope this is normal for this machine.

Works great
This ice cream maker works really well.
Did a lot of research before buying this one over others. It can do everything Gelato, ice cream, sorbet and frozen yoghurt.
Has its own built in refrigeration unit. Loads of different recipes online. I love making a Bailey's icecream.
I recommend this ice cream maker to anyone.
It is fairly large though so you will need Bench space.

Fantastic machine
Just love my ice cream maker. Makes it quick and freezes it too only thing I would change is the alarm that tells you when to add other ingredients is not loud enough and it's very easy to miss it on time but apart from that it's a great machine.

Love it
I have only had this for a month so I can't comment on the durability of this machine...but so far so good.it makes excellent ice cream and sorbets....much better than my old freeze bowl machine. I was a bit worried about some of the bad reviews regarding the timers on this machine...but so far no problems..touch wood. Maybe, hopefully, Philips have resolved this issue. I have made ice creams and sorbets two to three times a week. ...great for making frozen yoghurt and frozen drinks also.

Great machine until.........
This machine was awesome until 2 days after the warranty ran out, the dial broke and a weird unpleasant smell is now emitted from the machine when used in manual mode. Called customer service and was just advised of a local service centre to send it back for repairs which I will have to pay for and a blunt explanation of that warranty is only valid within the 2 year time period and even a day or two out of it no longer covers the machine. A few months out of warranty fair enough, but two days??? Breville you could at least make an exception

Great for a little while..
I've had this machine for a year and a half and used it 6-7 times. I brought it out today and, like so many other reviewer's machines, the dial was broken. It still works on manual, but the functionality is extremely impaired now. I would consider a cheaper machine if you are looking for an ice cream maker, this one just doesn't last long enough to justify the price tag.

Worked great twice. Now my Auto Dial does nothing.
I am a long time Breville customer, I own many of their products, most of which have never let me down. So I bought this smart scoop with high expectations. As one should considering the price. I have to say, the first and second time I used it I was delighted, it worked perfectly and made the best ice cream I had ever made in my life. Though the second time I used it I did it in manual, so I am not even 100% sure it worked then. I put it away for a bit in the winter, in anticipation of trying some fun new recipes once it warmed up again. Now u...Read more
pon trying it for the third time the auto dial does nothing whatsoever. I have tried everything I can think of but it doesn't respond. It doesn't adjust hardness, doesn't take it out of manual mode, nothing. It appears this is a common issue after reading other reviews. Needless to say this is very disappointing. I was really looking forward to putting it to use. I hope they can stand behind their product. I have always been a loyal customer1 comment

Machine worked for two summers; now it does not.
This was going to be the third season for this machine. Last year it started to make a lot of noise while churning. Now it just does not turn at all. We called Breville. They are asking for $150 including shipping. Not too bad, but not cheap either. Why should we spend more than the original $450? This was supposed to be the top of the line machine. Unfortunately it seems that this one, as we ll as most machines these days, they are made to last only a couple of years. Then "throw it away" and get another one.

Absolutely thrilled with this purchase. A very nice looking, solid machine, and easy to use. Perfect, fuss-free ice-cream every time. Todays treat was a delicious Mango Ice-cream, and it was the perfect consistency.

WOW!!! Love this machine!!
We purchased this machine 3 months ago and have used it regularly from day 1!! My main reason for purchasing this machine over cheaper models was due to not having to pre-freeze the bowl 12hrs prior to making the ice cream.
It's easy to use and the results have been consistent every time.
In the recipe book included there are a lot of recipes that call for eggs but I have found many recipes online that don't use eggs and turn out beautifully!!
This machine & the recipes I've tried have produced a much better quality ice cream that I've ever ...Read more

The most used gadget in the house!!!
Very easy to use, very fast and efficient. Cannot fault the quality of the product. We use this at least 3-4 times a week and there are only two of us, no kids. From the cheaters ice cream method to the stove top experimentation all of it is easy. The only bad thing would be that it has to be hand washed, so cleaning is always a chore.

Does the job, But very noisy!
I bought mine online for $21.00, so at that price you can hardly complain, It probably does the same job as much more expensive ice cream churns, but it's noisy. I should point out to prospective buyers that this is an ice cream churn, which is different to to a real ice cream maker, but real ice cream makers have a compressor like a fridge, are big and heavy and will cost you hundreds of dollars.

hello ..my problem is that i start my machine on a ice cream setting and starts to churn then in 15 secs it says remove paddle ready,It looks like it skips the timing process in both manual and auto as indictor line just moves straight up to desired setting of Gelato, ice cream, frozen yogurt, it seems to by passing the process.
