the machine works well with single shot basket. Good pressure nice extraction etc. When using the double shot basket i can not get the pressure as high as i would like no matter what grind or tamping pressure or how full the basket. Do i need to change the basket or am I missing something?

i am using a sunbeam coffee grinder that worked well with my previous espresso machine. I get good pressure when using the single shot basket.

Are both the single and the double baskets "single wall"? There is no reason you'd not be able to get good pressure with the double if you are with the single other than grind fineness or dose ^PM

So disappointed
There is nothing more disappointing than paying $600 or more and getting a faulty product. We followed all instructions to the letter, eagerly expecting decent coffee. But, we got a lemon. This Breville BES840XL is faulty and the pressure guage doesn’t budge, not even a little. The coffee is horrible and now we have to go to the trouble of packing it up and sending it back. This is the second time we purchased a Breville product - and both were crap. Never again!

Good reliable machine with a few minor flaws
Have now had it 2 years. It makes good reliable coffee and we use it 4 - 6 times day every day. Steam Frother is good, water tank is adequate, and it's simple to clean. I use the double shot bowl for all coffees as I like it strong, and grind fresh beans every 2 days. It came with a simple but reliable grinder. It does leak water occasionally, but it's not a major problem, I've only noticed it if I let the drip tray get more than 3/4 full. It does however require fairly regular cleaning cycles.

After several years of a horrible Gaggia, this is heaven
We replaced a semi auto Gaggia which never made a cup of coffee without complaint. It was misery from start to finish. The Breville has functioned perfectly for about 3 months now. It took a few tries to get a grind that was suitable. It also took time to get the tamping pressure right. Once we did, every coffee was perfect. I'm slightly worried about the reports of leaking but so far so good. I'll be back if this $650 (reduced to $399 at Bing Lee) machine only lasts 18 months you can bet. It's interesting to note there have been complaints ab...Read more
otu most machines on the market so here's hoping. Under Australian law you are entitled to extra warranty. An extra year at least is available. You can find those conditions if you google australian consumer law. UPDATE: 19/3/16 Still functioning perfectly. perfect coffee every time. there is a small period of adjusting the grind if you change coffee brands but as long as you adjust the grind to keep the needle in the "zone" the coffee is perfect. People have complained the needle indicator didn't work. I will bet it is because the grind was not correct. keep adjusting the grind and tamping pressure until the needle is where you want it, then keep doing the same thing and every cup is identical. UPDATE: 5/2/17 still working perfectly. Clean when required. HOT TIP: buy the cleaning tablets from off The Net. You'll get a lifetime supply for very little money.Similar opinion? It Still must be Faulty
I posted regarding this machine back in 2014, mainly about lack of brewing pressure and the lack of good crème and taste Anyway I'll try to keep this short. Breville would not accept that the machine could be faulty [it also had the other issues mentioned by others on here] and in the end they suggested that it was the possibly the grinder I was using [also a Breville]. After some time a new grinder arrived, good stuff, thank you.
So began the game of finding the right grind to get a coffee I could enjoy and even offer visitors. I should sta...Read more

I was surprised on two points regarding replies from Breville re this machine.

Good coffee at the beginning besides the leaking.
My breville BES840 was purchased a year ago, it is used to make roughly 5 coffees per day, after getting the grind and beans right I was extremely happy with the result. Although I did notice water coming from underneath the tray, my first though is that it may be my fault and I should probably empty the tray before it is full. Sadly after investigation that wasn't the problem, after using the machine it wants to cool down and a pool of water leaks from the machine (I know this because I tested it without the drip tray.)
Earlier when wanting t...Read more

Disappointed
We thought we'd upgrade this time around, having owned two cheaper Breville models in the past. I'm disappointed with the coffee my new machine is producing, having experimented with different grinds and beans..even buying the same coffee I used in my last machine. It shouldn't be this hard! My friends said I made the best coffee. Now I'm embarrassed to serve them a cup! I rang Breville to see if I could return it and get a cheaper model again, but was told "no" as it's not faulty.
I won't be wasting my money again.
Unhappy,
Angela.

Nice and does its job well
I came to the Breville infuser from an expensive twice the price sunbeam em7000 that lasted me just over 12 months.. and I have say coming from the bigger machine, the infuser felt really really small at first and I had my doubts.
The other thing that struck me was that the infuser definitely feels slower then the machine I had previously .. that being said. The infuser has grown on me alot
I have the cranberry and it looks great in the kitchen

ck standard accessories .. I really like that as well as the hidden drawer in the machine you have to store all your little pieces (Awesome addition) In terms of making coffee as I said it feels a little slower then the bigger machine I had and I do miss the milk temp feature I had on my other machine ...but the Breville infuser is probably all a home needs in terms of a espresso maker .. it really can make a decent cup .. Just make sure you have a reasonably decent grinder A decent machine .. my only regret is that I listened to coffee snobs and didnt buy this one first over the Sunbeam .. If this machine can last more than a year .. I will be very happy and the price atm is very good if you look aroundSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Good, reliable machine
I have had the BES840 for 14 months. Used every day for 4 lattes and the odd espresso. No leaks, no returning to Myers -it just works.
Took a bag of coffee to dial in the Sunbeam grinder - only minor grinder changes since when changing coffee beans.

Decent coffee. Easy, compact. My first machine.
Bought nine months ago. Used at least three times daily. My first espresso machine, so I had a bit to learn. I didn't use the free barista course that is offered. We are space constrained, so this is a good unit. Play around with different coffee blends to find what works best. I drink a flat white or cappuccino.
Shop around for Price. You can buy it for $400. Breville's List price is $550
GOOD POINTS:
Makes a good coffee.
Good frothing.
Very easy to operate and clean.
It has enough clearance to take a large mug (many machines don't).
Compact.
Quick preheat (1 min).

Love this Machine
Had this machine for almost a year making at least two coffees a day and so far so good. Makes great coffee and steams milk to a silky smooth texture (took a while for me to perfect that) and easy to clean. Bought from Myer on special and would recommend.

Cockroaches inside - yuk
Worked brilliantly until suddenly started overheating and producing steam instead of hot water (blew the handle straight off!). Breville repair shop said that cockroaches have got inside (yuk!!) and ruined the electrics. They are now refusing to fix in warranty as "not a machine issue" . Apart from the thought of cockroaches making me squirm, if Breville design a machine that the little rodents can easily get inside that would seem to be a design fault (i.e. you would have thought it was sealed) - and even if I do get it repaired what is to stop it happening again!?!

Budget espresso goodness
I've been lucky with our unit, no troubles at all. We bought ours a year ago to replace an old Sunbeam. I really like the espresso, very rarely over extracted, the temperature control and infuser makes for a unique combination, much more friendly to inconsistent grinds than a thermoblock unit. Great for low volume espresso. Downsides, the group head and basket feels a bit cheap and light, and the unit uses a lot more water, and ends up in the bottom collector tray. Overall, happy with the unit for the price we paid.

Disheartened
Owned an 820 for around 6 years, enjoyed every time that I had a coffee from it, reliable and never skipped a beat. Got me the 840 and have had nothing but disappointment for a whole month now, not one good experience. can not believe for the money it cost me that it is made by the same company.

sy to use for a quality coffee like your recent machines, not me needing to be a barista who needs to be standing at the roasters awaiting the freshest to grind instantly, this machine is shameful for the price, also the FORCED cleaning mode as you are about to attempt a potluck coffee is ridiculous, water full and collection chamber empty and it overflows every time< MAYBE IT"S SOMETHING I AM DOING WRONG.Similar opinion? I really can't fault it
I've had my machine for just over a year and must say I've been really pleased. I'm bit of a coffee geek and don't mess around with my coffees. The shots I'm pulling are great, very rarely get a dud. Obviously a lot is to do with the making skills, fresh beans etc. The machine has good pressure and the frother works well. For the $500-$800 price range its a good deal. I don't always clean it on it's scheduled time frames or replace the filters that often.
Price, quality of components
Seems a bit precious with regards to filter replacement times and cleaning.

Great coffee
This is a wonderful coffee machine and makes the perfect coffee.
It has a lot of nice little features like the tamper holder and a place
to retract the power cord. The steamer has plenty of power to make
great froth.
This however, is our third machine whilst under warranty and I don't
think we have just been unlucky. I seem to think the machines have inherent problems.
Each unit developed different problems, one just lost steam power and the
other developed a very peculiar noise. Our current one drips from the hot water
outlet and has from day one. Also the warranty conditions have changed from being 12 months
replacement to 12 month repair warranty which makes me suspicious that

Great machine, when it doesn't leak
I bought this machine about 11 months ago. I love the coffee it makes, I don't bother going to the roastery cafe next door for anything other than beans it's so good! I would like a wake-up timer like the BES900, but I can't have everything I guess! Only problem with the machine was about 6 months after buying it I noticed it started trickling cold water on startup into the bottom tray, behind the drip tray and tool storage tray. It was more an annoyance than anything else so I didn't bother replacing it for 4 months when I thought I had better...Read more
due to the warranty expiring soon. Myer were great and swapped it over on the spot. All was well for a month until the new machine started leaking on startup, the time into the tool tray and it was hot water this time. One month!! Myer again swapped it over no questions asked. My only fear is now with a month left on my original warranty what will happen to this, my third machine! I wouldn't even take a refund if they offered it because I like it too much, but the quality control is seriously frustrating me. I can see why they only offer a 12mth warranty! Coffee it makes is great and consistent Had two machines in a row leak2 comments
I just realised that we likely had a leak from day one also, we just thought the tray didn't line up properly! ours has lasted 4 years and now its eroded and leaking profusely and has to be replaced.
I thought I should post a follow up. My third machine seems to be third time lucky! It hasn't leaked yet about 2 years on.
One thing I've learned:
I steam my milk before pulling the espresso shot. ... Read more

great machine as is its grinder companion
Had a Sunbeam which I thought was Ok until I got sick of it blowing the group head off if I tried too fine grind. This machine produces beautiful crema and has only once blown head off when I got too ambitious with overfilling. Steamer does a great job as long as you focus like you are meant too. Love its speed to action . Looked at all the expensive ones but I am not going to wait half an hour for my coffee machine to decide when its ready. Life is busy and power pricey.

Faulty pressure gauge - do not buy this machine
I bought the breville BES840 before i read this stream of reviews. In hindsight, I would nto have bothered. The first one I bought, the pressure gauge did not budge, and the coffee was poor with zero crema. I replaced this with a new one, and exactly the same problem. There are so many reports of this machine not providing appropriate pressure that I would steer well clear of this machine. I will not be buying breville again.

I have had nothing but problems with this machine I bought in August 2022. Right now I am trying to run a descale function....holding the 2 cup button down and then holding the power button just turns off the machine. Please help?

make sure the machine is off first, no lights on, hold 2 cups button, then also power button for 5secs until cleaning cycle starts/cleaning light flashes. I found a youtube clip with 2 lame guys but once you get it right you get it right, happy brewing
