Looks OK but....
The 840 was a replacement for an older machine that died. Worked OK for a few weeks then the pressure gauge started to get lower and lower and the coffee worse and worse. Eventually the gauge would only just move off zero. Did all the things Customer Support asked till they advised that I had to return the machine to the retailer as there wasn't a service agent in my area. Harvey Norman were great and ordered a replacement machine which arrived a week or so later. First start up and the machine wouldn't suck up water. Customer Service advised ...Read more
that this was an air-lock problem, have 4 -5 of these a day, and to just keep pressing the 2 cup button and it will soon be right, just great for a new machine. Anyway I keeps pressing and pressing till finally the machine gives up and won't do anything. Contacted Customer Service and again advised to return to the retailer. I now have a Sunbeam model which makes great coffee. Looks OK Didn't work like it was supposed to.....

Great machine
After many years of wanting an espresso machine i finally got my machine. I really wanted an Rancilio Silvia but couldn't afford one. So after much research settled for this Breville. I was a little apprehensive, as i really wanted an Italian machine. I thought that you couldn't get good coffee from a machine made by a general appliance company. But the machine works brilliantly. Really good coffee all the time. You do need to know what your doing and you must lash out and get good burr grinder. Time for another coffee!
Reliably good coffee, nice looking machine
Frothing milk takes time.

Love it!
I've had mine for over 2 years now & can't fault it.
2-3 cups of coffee every day.
I found it took quite a while to get the brew & ground beans right
but I put that down to me learning what to do.
I remember my first few cups were disappointing but after a time I got to know the machine
& it all came together.
A good cup every time now.

Love it but...
Love the machine, it makes a great coffee but it has started leaking. The local breville service providers won't touch it so my husband pulled it apart, it needs a simple seal which breville refuse to sell me!!! Disappointed considering it's 18 months old and cost over $500. The best breville could do was offer me a new one at a discounted price, I can't see the point when it's easy to fix! We bought a seal off eBay and it no longer leaks!
Makes great coffee
No-one wants to replace the seal!

Disappointed
I had to replace my Baby Gaggia as it stopped working and wasn't worth getting it repaired. The first one I received I had to return as the pressure gauge didn't work. The Breville rep I spoke to said this wasn't unusual! I am very disappointed with the machine as it is noisy and vibrates a lot. I am having trouble getting the gauge to work properly.....I am hoping I will work this out eventually. The first machine I could steam the milk with no problem but not the one I have now. The storage tray is virtually useless as it also collects water. I am sorry I didn't just go for a cheaper all manual machine.

Breville BES840
I have not had much lucky with mine, after 6 cups of espresso the pressure gauge needle is stuck and the quality of the espresso is just ok! My previous machine was a Sunbeam cafe series $169 cheapie it made a nicer espresso everytime. Also the new Breville Infuser BES840 is in to be repaired…. disappointed I feel I made a mistake
I was told it would be more than 2 weeks before they can look at it for repair work. I am hoping it is worth the wait.
It looked nice and I read a lot of reviews
Inconsistant brews

Impossible to make bad coffee
I've had this machine for a couple of months now. I thought I'd use the machine for a while before I reviewed it. Ahhh this machine makes fantastic coffee. My wife and I couldn't live without it and I'll never drink instant coffee again. I purchased the machine after seeing the performance ranking on the Choice product testing site ranked it above machines triple it's price. If you're after an easy to use manual coffee machine this is the one to get. The frother works great. The machine pre-infuses the coffee with low pressure steam before it e...Read more
spressos. As with all espresso machines the only trick is to get the grounds to the right fineness and the tamping pressure right so the steam pressure needle sits in the "goldilocks zone". This makes very good coffee
My second Breville Machine, replacing one that died of old age. This one does a far better job. The infuser system works in moistening the beans before the full pressure of extraction is applied. The pressure gauge shows if you have ground the beans too fine, or tamped them too hard, and it feels like quite an achievement when the dial shows you have got it right. The steamer and hot water facility works well, reducing the temperature when you have finished steaming the milk so that the steam is not too hot for extracting coffee (this was a pro...Read more
blem with my previous Breville). The clever hidden extras tray is a good idea. There are four holders for the ground beans - two of them double wall, and two single wall. I cannot tell which makes the better coffee, but it is good to be able to make coffees for visitors more quickly. An Allen Key, along with the usual extras, is supplied but I have not worked out what it is for since I can find no reference to it in the manual. The cleaning facility for the group head is fussier and requires tablets that have to be purchased and used about every two months. There is also a water filter in the reservoir which apparently needs to be replaced every two months. Extra expenses there. On the whole I am extremely happy with this machine and really like the coffee produced and the speed and quality of the milk steamer quality results, easy to use, quick, reasonable price4 comments

Fantastic machine, very very pleased with it.
I did a lot of research before buying this machine for my husband. A LOT (yes, I am one of those people).
I had a price range of about $300-600 and - after asking a few questions on a popular coffee website - eventually settled on this machine. I am super pleased with it. It been in constant use since we bought it last year and we haven't had a single problem with the machine. Got a GREAT price from where we bought it too!

tamper the coffee, but we now have found our favourite beans, perfect grind setting on the grinder. If you pack the coffee too tight it will not get the right pressure and will not make a good coffee but this is some of the fine tuning that we expected to do anyway and part of the fun. I also think that most beans we have tried have required a very fine grind (we also have the breville smart grinder). Using a crappy grinder with this machine probably would not cut it. I cannot comment on the steam wand as we have never used it (we have the Breville milk frother - what can I say... we are enjoying the triple breville set!). I hate buying coffees from cafes now as they just aren't as good as those I can make myself.2 comments

Good home machine.
This is my first home espresso machine and I am very happy with it.
I have a little experience with commercial machines and the Infuser is quite good for home use. With 3 coffee drinkers in the house, I usually make the coffee for everyone.
Single wall filters are used along with fresh beans and a reasonable grinder. The Breville BCG450 just manages the job as the grinder.
Once you get the hang of it, it is quite easy to use, it tells you when to run the cleaning cycle and has a reminder to change the filter inside the tank. If you have do...Read more

Great little machine
I have had a smaller manual Breville expresso machine for many years and decided to upgrade to the Infuser. Like many reviews have mentioned having the right grind for the beans is important. I had an old grinder but the grind didn't get the beans fine enough. If I was going to get this coffee machine working to its full potential I needed a new grinder. I purchased a Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder and it is fantastic. Compliments the coffee machine well. It does take a bit of time and effort to get the right bean grind, grind amount and t...Read more
amp but once you have mastered it it is truly a great machine. I find the single wall filter baskets are great but like Matt-E-K mentioned in his review the filter baskets are a little tricky to get out of the portafilter, especially when hot, and has resulted in a couple of broken nails! The steam wand is great for frothing milk but I purchased a smaller jug as the 700ml jug which comes with the Infuser is a little too big when I am just making a cappucino for one. So far so good. Once mastered it makes great coffee Removing and changing the "hot" filter baskets from the portafilterSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Very Impressive Machine
The simple fact is if you are getting a bad coffee out of this machine you have not got the right grind, grinder, tamping pressure, or beans. A good quality grinder is the best weapon in a coffee addicts arsenal.
I have been using what I would consider not the best quality beans, but after experimentation with the grind the machine was creating exceptional coffee that most would pay $4.50 for at a boutique. It consistently produces a smooth, silky crema every time I use it, the pre-infusion process definitely makes a big difference to the q...Read more
uality of the extraction. I continue to be surprised by the quality coffee this machine produces. It is well worth the money. Always experiment with different grinds and tamper pressure as all beans require a different treatment for the optimal results. Quiet, reliable, consistant, heats up quick, the filter seems to remove the chlorine tase from the water. An extra year warranty would be niceSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

BES840 - Mostly what it says it is
The Breville BES840 'the Infuser' semi-automatic espresso coffee maker is a reasonably good machine. Most of its features and functions as detailed on Breville's website are useful and meet reasonable expectations a consumer might have after reading about them. Well that is how I would rate it at the moment. Having had previous home espresso coffee machine experience I like what it offers for its price point like the fact that it is semi-automatic and has features like volumetric control on the espresso water pour where, at the press of a butt...Read more
on, a measured amount of water is delivered to the coffee making head and then stops. Of course this 'shot volume' is also able to be programmed to the operator's desire. I have only been using the BES840 for about a month. So perhaps I should come back to this review when I have had the machine closer to one year and it is near or at the end of its 1 Year Replacement Warranty (which is rather limited when compared to the warranty offered on the Breville 800ES model). I make at least two cups of coffee nearly every day with one of the coffee drinks being a Latté and the other a straight Long Black. So I have already had reason to use most of the features on the BES840. It is also quite usual for me to make up to five or more cups of coffee a day so the machine gets a reasonable work out for a home espresso coffee machine. I made the personal realisation a while ago that the best coffee result comes with using recently roasted whole beans and grinding them just immediately before you need to use the coffee in your coffee making. I mention this because the BES840 comes with two sets of baskets or filters, single wall and dual wall. I have not even bothered with using the one and two cup Dual Wall filters. These Dual Wall filters are really designed to be used with pre-ground coffee to assist the generation of crema. So I cannot offer any advice on the usefulness or otherwise of these. From amongst the other features the BES840 boasts - the low pressure pre-infusion feature does seem to me to make a difference for the better to the coffee production process and can be appreciated in a drink like the Long Black. Likewise the espresso pressure gauge may seem like a gimmick on a consumer machine, but it does appear to respond appropriately to different ground coffee packing densities and so gives the operator a visual clue as to what might be going on while the coffee is being made and so that adjustments can be made if necessary. The machine also seems to easily generate enough steam for a home drink making session and the pressure behind that steam is actually rather strong, especially when using it with the smaller amounts of 'milk' probably typical in a home scenario. It took me sometime to really adjust to best use of the steam flow. I often only have need to steam somewhere between 150 mL and 300 mL of 'milk'. So it is a nice gesture that Breville included as an accessory with the machine a Stainless steel frothing jug but given it has got a capacity of about 700 mL I have not really made use of it very often – the amount of 'milk' I sometime use would probably be fortunate to cover the bottom. The size of the jug also perhaps makes a statement about the capacity at which the machines steam frothing capabilities were being optimised. The one feature of the BES840 that is already annoying me is the steam making for 'milk' frothing. The BES840 boasts an 'Auto Purge' feature that is intended to flush any over heated water produced during the 'steaming' cycle so that when the operator then makes the coffee shots the water temperature has been returned to what should be optimal for espresso extraction and ensures the ground coffee will not be 'burnt' by the initial water flow. This idea, by itself, is to be absolutely commended. However the design of the machine is such that Breville have placed a single dial type control on the BES840 machine that allows selecting between STEAM/STANDBY/HOT WATER. When creating steam the operator is instructed to first select STEAM and leave the machine at this position until the indicator light stops flashing and then the steam wand is ready for use. Before inserting the steam wand into the milk, the operator is further instructed to 'pause' the steam flow by returning the dial back to the STANDBY position. This standby or pause function is supposed to last for 6 seconds before exiting steam mode! At the exiting of the 'steam mode' it seems the machine is programmed to immediately engage the 'Auto Purge' feature. I find this frustrating. For a start I really do not think that the machine that I have does maintain a pause for 6 seconds before it starts to 'Auto Purge'. And even if it does wait that amount of time – the situation still assumes that an operator no longer wants steam after six seconds. That is silly. What if an operator wants to froth more than one type of milk (skim or soy anyone) or even just perform simple maintenance like clean and then purge the steam wand ? Under these circumstances the operator must keep repeating the steam cycle. The supply of steam would be better to remain available until an operator specifically chooses otherwise. Breville could have easily facilitated this by providing an additional selection option on the dial for 'hold steam' (or whatever other label is appropriate). The purpose of this selection would have been to stop the steam flow through the wand without engaging the 'Auto Purge' feature. In my experience the 'Auto Purge' feature seems to get engaged over and over and over again and just wastes the filtered water and quickly fills up the drip tray into which the purged water is discharged. The other issue that I have found is that Breville have designed the group handle or portafilter (as they like to call it) for this machine with a 'clever' sprung metal retaining clip that sits in a ring along the inside edge. The purpose of this retaining clip is to keep the baskets or filters in place. The idea again is admirable. My issue is that I regularly make different coffee drinks that require the use of both the one and two cup measure filter baskets. This requires a need to replace one filter basket in the portafilter with another filter basket. As is to be expected after using the portafilter and filter baskets to make coffee they become hot, maybe even very hot as you use them more and longer. Trying to remove a 'hot' filter basket from a 'hot' portafilter handle when the retaining clip also has expanded due to the heat can be unnecessarily challenging. So as soon as I can determine how to remove the retaining clip without damaging anything I will probably execute this option. This might lead to other problems, but nothing a gentle shake will not relieve. Another observation I could make is that the BES840 has another nifty idea with a Tool Storage tray for storage of accessories located behind the drip tray. Good idea. However on the machine that I have there seems to be an issue with water sometimes getting into the Tool Storage tray. This is not a result of the drip tray filling up and therefore overflowing. This issue can occur with the drip tray having only just been emptied. So perhaps the issue is to do with something not aligning properly - maybe the drip tray not 'clicking' into place, or the discharge tube outlet not located correctly – I do not know. What I do know is that it makes the Tool Storage tray less useful as any items stored there regularly get wet. Also, potential buyers of the machine should be made aware that the BES840 is designed to use a Water Filter. So if you go with Breville's idea and strategy in this regard you will be up for a replacement filter every 2 months (last I checked the cheapest price for water filters appropriate to this model being about $30 for pack of six, so about $5 per filter). Owning this Breville BES840 model comes after having owned a KRUPS 'Espresso Mondo' Household Espresso Maker for a period of over ten years. I admit that I had come to the stage where I very much liked that KRUPS machine in all its manual wonder and extensive simplicity - mostly because I probably knew all its little eccentricities. So my evaluation of the BES840 is certainly going to be shaped by comparison to the old machine - a perhaps basic appliance with fewer features but with a history of long service and good beverage production. In addition, I am also living with the frustration of really having wanted to obtain and use a Breville BES900 'the Dual Boiler' model but was unable to justify spending that amount on a coffee machine at this time! ;-) Pre-infusion feature, Dedicated Hot Water Outlet, 15 bar Italian made pump. 6 seconds before exiting Steam mode, auto purge functionSimilar opinion?
