All of my family absolutely loves this toaster, though I agree with other reviewers that it’s not as durable as it could be.
Both the “bit more” and “lift and look” features are genius. I love the long and wide slots that fit slices of sourdough and Turkish rolls.
Here are the issues:
- My first unit had an element fail after six months, but I got the toaster replaced under warranty
- The toast cooks more at the top than the bottom, so we need to flip the toast upside down then use the “bit more” button to get it evenly toasted, but that is a...

Loved the design, features
- toaster never toasted equally or consistently - same bread, same thickness, different results
- the worst - exactly 2 years into owning a big flash and toaster is dead

Had a couple of these Breville 'Smart' toasters over the last few years and have to agree with the bulk of the reviews here - they really are rubbish. The 'lift and look' function failed almost immediately on our most recent one, and today the whole unit failed altogether. Even when it was working, the results where less than satisfactory - toast only cooked on one side/burnt around the edges etc. I don't know if the people at Breville take any notice of these reviews or whether they don't give a rats what anyone thinks, but I notice there are no comments from anyone at the company on these pages in reply to what is an almost universally negative opinion of their products.

Bought just over 2 years ago and over the last 4 weeks the elements died, one side at a time. Now I can only toast 1 piece at the highest setting. Don’t buy it - it’s not worth the other features if it doesn’t toast.

Bought it from Myer in May 2017, use it once a week on average. One side of the toaster stopped working after seeing an electric spark. You would expect a toaster with this price ($179) to last longer than that. The quality of this toaster is unacceptable and unsatisfactory

We had this toaster for about 5 years after receiving a gift card for Myer.
We had toast almost every weekday and some weekends to give context on how often we used it. We got it in a red colour and it was always a hit with visitors.
It toasted items pretty well, but I always struggled to get crumpets perfect (could never find the correct position for the slider). The ‘a little bit more’ button always fixed it (it was also good as a warmer for your second or third slice while buttering your first)
We used multigrain, white, whole meal, crumpets - you name it.
I only wish the finishing ‘beep’ happened before the toast began to rise - it always did it after the toast had finished rising and had begun to cool.

Hit the lift and look button and shorts the main switchboard. Hardly used but of course out of warranty. Sent an email to Breville, response I got was to throw it out. No concern why shorting and given other reviews seems like a common issue.

Had this $169 toaster for just over 2 years, not used every day of the week but is now dead. Literally died in a flash, tripped the house safety switch and again when checking whether it still worked. Was a good unit while it worked, but clearly from our experience and other reviews there is a fundamental flaw with the quality of electrical components used and therefore a safety issue.
If we had bought a $9 Kmart or BigW toaster then just over 2 years occasional use would be fair, at almost 20 times the price it's unacceptable, particularly with no service parts available from the maker. In a house where we also have a Breville kettle, sandwich press, blender etc sadly we will not buy Breville again.
Avoid.

Ive got alot of breville products, and sadly this one has ruined the brand for me, its lasted just over 12 months, so out of warranty... one side just stopped working....
Update - Seems Breville might reassess my units warranty cover as I got such short lifespan. I was told the units are on the whole good, but some fail early.... evidently i got a bad one. Hope they replace! This would certainly redeem my thoughts of the brand.

Sadly our toasters keep breaking! Our first one stopped popping up and we're now on our second and one side has stopped working. Really disappointing because it's a nice toaster, looks great and toasts well but too many faults especially for the price. Luckily we got an extended warranty!

Well, I am amending my review.
As I said I would if this thing failed.
I have also downgraded the rating from 5 to 3 star
Well its been a month or two and the first failure was the Fruit bread setting.
The blue button no longer lights up so this is going back to the retailer .
The comments below are my initial impressions and I removed a couple of paragraphs...
Read more Toasters really do get a bagging on reviews, mostly from breakdowns and malfunctions or uneven toasting . I had replaced my Sunbeam Cafe series with another Sunbeam which I returned and you can see my review on that one. This toaster is not immuned to those one star reviews, however as most were on wear and tear and failure I have not had this long enough to comment. I will however comment on what this is supposed to do and that is to toast. The toaster itself is diecast with brushed aluminium fully auto button press . An impressive looking beast but does it toast? Well, yes it does and it does it more evenly than any toaster I have ever owned . Put your toast in and make your selection and away you go. Big fat Artisan breads can also be used in this toaster and it also has a fruit bread setting and a crumpet setting which allows you to just leave your heat setting where you left it and the toaster does the rest . A double press of the crumpet button brings up the blue light for fruit bread . Average time is one minute to over 2 minutes depending on what you are toasting. Many people can't figure out why there is a 5 setting on this . The reason is this setting is for dense Artisan breads not your airy fairy commercial supermarket style offerings which will get burnt to a crisp. All toasting in my tests were even to within about 90% on my reckoning and I just left my setting on 1.8 plenty high enough for me. . Refer to my photos where I show both sides and also a fruit bread result with and without the blue button press. You can see that those presets do make a difference it's just not a gimmick.Purchased in January 2020 at Bing Lee Physical store for $146.
Whoever the Industrial Designer of this toaster was got the builtin obsolescence bang on. First one stopped toasting on one side after 23months. Replacement one had the same issue after 9months. It's not a cheap toaster so should be made with much better internal components and materials.

Purchased Breville BTA630 circa 2016 failed within warranty period, Elements in one side not working.
Retailer had no replacement stock so we took the money and went to JBHiFi in search of a replacement.
BTA630 discontinued so we purchased Breville BTA830 20 04 2017. The BTA830 looks the same as the BTA630.
Our new BTA830 failed within warranty period. Button backlighting would spontaneously flicker on and off during the night and intermittent failure to operate.
Warranty replacement BTA830 from JBHiFi 13 01 2022. This one failed on 05 08 2022...

The toaster was great for a little while, I've had this for around 9 months. Tonight it caught fire, not within any crumbs but the insulation at the top where no crumbs even go.
I was very lucky to be watching it cook while I had a pan on the stove next to it, noticed for about 20seconds one side of the toasters element wasn't lit and a little spark at the top which I thought was maybe the element trying to light - kept watching and it appeared to light and then went out- then started a tiny fizzle of fire. I quickly popped the toaster and th...
Read moree flame extinguished on its own, but has left a little hole. I've unplugged and will be taking it back to JB Hifi this week. Pretty disappointed considering the cost and that I purchased the matching kettle. My previous breville toaster lasted me 10 years. I will be finding another toaster and brand after reading another reviewer's comment that it's happened to hers on multiple occasions.Purchased in October 2018 at JB Hi-Fi for $200.

Works well while it is working. Just stopped working with all lights blinking while toasting some bread and will no longer work. This is just past the 2 years warranty. Really poor durability.
Questions & Answers
The toaster when I turn it on will let me toast but when it finishes all the lights flash but will not turn off and go to stand by. If I turn it on it will have the Cancel light on for a very short time and if not used all the lights will start flashing. Once the lights start flashing you can not use it. I have cleaned the tray and turned it upside down.
Take it back as I did with two different ones as mine was about to go on fire on the crumpet setting at its lowest setting and I had to switch it of at the wall Breviille did not reply to my complaint. this is an expensive piece of junk
Funnily enough I bought mine just used it few days and same thing happened this morning.
Our new toaster BTA830BSS toats the bread very dark even on the lowest setting. Can the scale be adjusted? Any other suggestions? (I can't even imagine what you would use the number 5 for!!)
BTA830 is flashing red lights and goes through a cycle of lowering down, elements come on and then raising up again 2times beforrr flashing lights commences. Have tried shaking out to remove obstructions- no luck! Any ideas?

Even though the crumbs does not look like clogging the mechanism, give the unit a few firm pats to dislodge any crumbs fixes this issue.
