Never worked right and only a few months old and doesn’t work at all.
Smart Toast BTA825We toast regular bread slices. We tried all settings. Bread sometimes got stuck. Didn’t toast evenly. Now doesn’t work at all. This is the most money I ever spent on a toaster and the worst toaster I have ever owned.
Show detailsGreat looking toaster but ......
Smart Toast BTA825Purchased this in Jan 2022 and we have been pleased with it. Unfortunately, the element on one side of my toaster have stopped working altogether. We only use the toaster mainly on weekends, maybe that's why mine has lasted 15 months. Looking at the other reviews, the toaster doesn't appear to last beyond 18 months so the one year warranty is pretty useless. Disappointing that Breville hasn't come on line to address customers' issues. Sad that so many appliances don't last long these days nor can be fixed - what hope is there to reduce waste?
Show detailsNice toaster but broken twice
Smart Toast BTA830Sadly our toasters keep breaking! Our first one stopped popping up and we're now on our second and one side has stopped working. Really disappointing because it's a nice toaster, looks great and toasts well but too many faults especially for the price. Luckily we got an extended warranty!
Show detailsBest toaster we have had in 40 years, versatile and easy to use
Smart Toast BTA845We bought this toast in December 2018 as I wanted a toaster that could do tings like crumpets and fruit toast properly. We weren't disappointed. The toaster is easy to use, and as really useful settings for things like frozen bread, crumpets and fruit toast. We use it every day. Each half of the 4 slide toaster can be set separately so we can do things like have crumpets on one half and fruit bread in the other and get perfect results.

Smart Toast BTA825Three years on and this toaster is quite the best I have owned, perhaps not as lovable as my 40 year old Sunbeam Automatic popup but it's close .
Consistent performance and reliability makes for an unfussed morning departure .
Basic maintenance is vital, the crumb tray is a little small and needs cleaning often . Tipping the unit upside down is also required, especially when toasting crumbly breads and Hot Cross Buns .
I was asked to repair a Smeg toaster by a friend, the very flash and impressive case hid the cheapest of internals imag
beware non repair
Smart Toast BTA825i have posted on this site about this product but have come up with this disappointing finding. a breville service repair centre have informed me that the smart toast BTA825 is non repairable and there are no replaceable parts available for this model. mine has a faulty toast/cancel button that has gradually bottomed out or worn out to the point of complete failure. it now looks certain that i have a pile of junk sitting on the bench top in my kitchen. very sad for a 159 dollar purchase after a couple of years use.
i would say not a smart toast........harvey norman should place a sticker on these toasters......non repairable!!

Smart Toast BTA830Well, I am amending my review.
As I said I would if this thing failed.
I have also downgraded the rating from 5 to 2 star
Well its been a month or two and the first failure was the Fruit bread setting.
The blue button no longer lights up so this is going back to the retailer .
The comments below are my initial impressions and I removed a couple of paragraphs
... Read more Toasters really do get a bagging on reviews, mostly from breakdowns and malfunctions or uneven toasting . I had replaced my Sunbeam Cafe series with another Sunbeam which I returned and you can see my review on that one. This toaster is not immuned to those one star reviews, however as most were on wear and tear and failure I have not had this long enough to comment. I will however comment on what this is supposed to do and that is to toast. The toaster itself is diecast with brushed aluminium fully auto button press . An impressive looking beast but does it toast? Well, yes it does and it does it more evenly than any toaster I have ever owned . Put your toast in and make your selection and away you go. Big fat Artisan breads can also be used in this toaster and it also has a fruit bread setting and a crumpet setting which allows you to just leave your heat setting where you left it and the toaster does the rest . A double press of the crumpet button brings up the blue light for fruit bread . Average time is one minute to over 2 minutes depending on what you are toasting. Many people can't figure out why there is a 5 setting on this . The reason is this setting is for dense Artisan breads not your airy fairy commercial supermarket style offerings which will get burnt to a crisp. All toasting in my tests were even to within about 90% on my reckoning and I just left my setting on 1.8 plenty high enough for me. . Refer to my photos where I show both sides and also a fruit bread result with and without the blue button press. You can see that those presets do make a difference it's just not a gimmick. It is now May 2023, the toaster is toasting the left side of the bread and barely touching the right side, which, requires you to turn the bread around to get the other side to toast. It is almost as if the toaster instructions are stuck on crumpet mode, because this is what it does on crumpet mode. I am now in the market for another toaster and it wont be a Breville.- +5
No good. Looks great but too many issues
Smart Toast BTA825Purchased it 18 months ago. It started by flashing and not being able to pop up on its own without switching the power in and off. This happened a number of times. Now only one side toasts and the other goes up and down but doesnt heat/toast at all. Rubbish. Considering how expensive this toaster was $140. I expect more

Toasts well while it works
Smart Toast BTA830Whoever the Industrial Designer of this toaster was got the builtin obsolescence bang on. First one stopped toasting on one side after 23months. Replacement one had the same issue after 9months. It's not a cheap toaster so should be made with much better internal components and materials.

Smart Toast BTA825Purchased first Smart Toast just after Christmas. After several months, stopped toasting. Was replaced and now after a similar time frame, one side doesn't heat up at all and the other, just barely. Our Kmart toaster bought years ago now dragged out of cupboard and works so much quicker.

Brand loyalty goes wrong this time
Smart Toast BTA845After owning one of these for many years and being totally satisfied with it we bought a new one without hesitation. It is a total disappointment. As others have stated it toasts totally erratically and only on one side generally. It is also so slow it drives us mad. Extremely disillusioned. The old one is almost worn out but works much better.
Show detailsNot quite perfect
Smart Toast BTA825Fairly big for a 2 standard slice toaster. Sceptical at first regarding the motorised toast lift ...it still works after 3 years ! Controls are simple and straight forward. Bread slots could be slightly longer to accomodate European style rye breads, without having to purchase the larger model that has a very long footprint, internal edges could of been rolled, so buckled toast doesn’t jam on lift, fairly even toasting coverage, first toast requires longer toasting time to subsequent toasting

Smart Toast BTA830Purchased Breville BTA630 circa 2016 failed within warranty period, Elements in one side not working.
Retailer had no replacement stock so we took the money and went to JBHiFi in search of a replacement.
BTA630 discontinued so we purchased Breville BTA830 20 04 2017. The BTA830 looks the same as the BTA630.
Our new BTA830 failed within warranty period. Button backlighting would spontaneously flicker on and off during the night and intermittent failure to operate.

A+ for cool factor but not practical
Smart Toast BTA825Pretty cool and doesn't throw your toast up halfway to space but there are problems with it. Some items get stuck on the way up and it's very difficult to clear. Far too expensive.

Smart Toast BTA830The toaster was great for a little while, I've had this for around 9 months. Tonight it caught fire, not within any crumbs but the insulation at the top where no crumbs even go.
I was very lucky to be watching it cook while I had a pan on the stove next to it, noticed for about 20seconds one side of the toasters element wasn't lit and a little spark at the top which I thought was maybe the element trying to light - kept watching and it appeared to light and then went out- then started a tiny fizzle of fire. Smart Toast BTA830Purchased this product in August 2018 and had no issues until I went to use it yesterday. Pressed the button down and an almighty flash came from the appliance. Needless to say it doesn't work and after paying $169 not impressed. Now to do battle in getting a replacement???
Show detailsQuality toaster, but is it worth the price?
Smart Toast BTA845Good quality toaster but not convinced that it's worth spending so much to get all the bells and whistles. A simpler and cheaper toaster will toast just the same as long as you are prepared to learn the settings, which you have to do with this one anyway. I have used this many times over the three weeks I have had it and tested it with bread, bagels, crumpets/raisin loaf and English muffins.
For me, the most valuable option has been the crumpet/fruit bread button which toasts less on one side than the other. Works well with bagels and Engl

Smart Toast BTA845Been using this toaster multiple times a day for nearly three months. We love it and have had no issues. Love being able to do four slices at once and have different toast settings for each person. Toasts evenly. The crumpet button is cool. I also like the lift and look/toast more buttons. Very handy and you don't risk burning the toast. It makes a cute noise when the toast is done. The toast doesn't pop up but lowers and rises slowly. It's easy to clean and looks good.

Smart Toast BTA845This toaster cost a lot of money but it will last for years. The first one I purchased lasted over 10 years and am now in my second which is into its third year. The crumpet setting works well and the other settings all do what they are supposed to. I do love this toaster.

Smart Toast BTA845Was a bit hesitant to get such an expensive toaster but I am glad I did.
I love how it is fully automated and beeps to let you know your toast is ready.

Typical Breville, Can't Be Fixed
Smart Toast BTA830My wife loves Breville, we have owned Breville toasters, electric jugs & espresso machines. However, in my experience when something goes wrong there are no spare parts and you have to replace the whole item.
We owned this toaster for a little over 3 years and the elements on one side have just died. I have an electrical background and could easily fix that so, I attempted to source a replacement part. I contacted Breville who said parts are not available but they would offer me a discount on a new toaster.

We had the element blow on our Breville electric jug and were told that there were no replacement parts, but we could buy a replacement jug at a discount price. When our $1300 espresso machine died just (outside Breville's 12 months manufacturer warranty) it got replaced (rather than repaired) under our JB HiFi extended warranty. Can't have been an easy fix if they replaced rather than repaired a $1300 appliance. Secondly, I contacted Choice who tell me that at around $190 (you can buy this toaster cheaper now), this was a mid to high range toaster that should last 4 to 6 years. Incidentally, Choice have a good article on product life here: https://bit.ly/2uPZxZVWorks for me
Smart Toast BTA825I mainly toast sourdough bread which doesn’t really brown like most toast. The features it offers are really useful. You can check the toasting progress, it alerts you when the toasting has finished, it has the lift and look feature and a bit more button. Due to its size it takes up a lot of space on the bench but it allows me to toast the large round sourdough slices that have to be hand cut. The length way profile fits on my bench. Smart Toast BTA845The only job of a toaster is to cook the bread.
You would think that spending almost $200 on a toaster that it would do that and more.
The look of it is great, the functions and usability is great but it doesn't evenly cook a slice of bread.
One side is always more then the other, you have to keep turning the bread so it cooks evenly and doesn't burn.
The crumpet function, puts all the heat on one side, so doesn't matter what setting its on, you have to stop it or it will burn.
I actually returned the first toaster because it wasn't cooking evenly (thinking it was a faulty one) but the second one was exactly the same.
Definitely not a smart toaster. My mums $10 toaster cooks better.
7 years old and still going like new
Smart Toast BTA845I was told I was wasting my money when I purchased this expensive toaster, however it has been going for over 7 years now and hasn't missed a beat. Hopefully I haven't jinxed it and it keeps going for another 7 years. Love the "a bit more" function and easy adjustment

Smart Toast BTA830Today our 4th Breville toaster automatic caught fire, this the the second one of the same model and all together 4th in 7 years, they were all faulty and the last one today caught fire which could potentially burn our house, I rang Breville but they did not care. We bought the first same model from David Jones which stopped working after a couple of months, we returned it and got a refund, went to Good Guys as they offer an extended warranty and David Jones didn't, bought the second exact same model and this one worked for 6 months and caught fire today, not recommended at all as can burn down your house.

Smart Toast BTA845I bought this about 8 months ago. I decided to splash out the $159 which was a discounted price from it's original $200 plus pricetag and thought I was getting a decent quality item that would at least do perfect toast and last a long time. To begin with this toaster wasn't bad at all but as time wore on we started to notice how it toasts unevenly just like the cheap ones do. It cooks crumpets only on one side and burns raisin toast to a crisp even on the fruitbread feature it has. On thicker slices in particular crumpets that are frozen and wh

Smart Toast BTA825If you are after a toaster that has cool looking led lights and lowers the toast for you at a click of a button this is the one for you, has some great features like the bit more feature ( which toasts for 30 seconds extra if required ) and the main thing is that it makes great toast.
Show detailsNot too bad for a Breville
Smart Toast BTA845I had reservations at first purchasing an expensive Breville toaster because from previous experiences the Breville brand has let me down with the reliability and longevity of their products. I purchased the frost blue model and I find the smart toaster great. Once set up and adjusted it toasts bread perfectly. I like the A Bit More and the Lift and Look button. It also toast crumpets really well.

One thing parents should consider before purchasing this product is the safety of having a press button toaster. If plugged in and left on the buttons on top could easily be bumped or pressed causing the toaster to operate. I had an unfortunate experience with a Tupperware that was left on top of the toaster but it I isolated the power as per the instructions it would have never happened. All in all it’s a great toaster that when set correctly to the type of object you are toasting and looks really good in the the different colours they have available. Two years on and this product no longer works. A lemon
Smart Toast BTA830I bought this 4 slice toaster (also called The Smart Toast Long Slice https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/toasters/bta830.html) after using and admiring a 2 slice version at a holiday house. Sadly the long slice version is a lemon. It was burning toast and acting up after a week of purchase--David Jones/Breville replaced it but the replacement broke within the year (flashing lights, burning smells etc.) It seems others have had similar experiences. (This review was originally incorrectly applied to the bit more toaster-I've deleted that review and posted here instead.) Disappointed and need a new toaster.

Smart Toast BTA825Needed a replacement for our old toaster after a kitchen reno. Requirements were that it needed to be “silver” or “chromed”. Only required two slice option as there are only two of us and toaster was required to fit into newly created appliance cupboard along with kettle and coffee maker.
Tried the Breville which seemed to fit the bill and was on special at the time. Upon first use, was surprised to discover that rather than have a lever to insert the toast, there was a motorised drive. Place the bread in the slots and push the button. Your

A handy feature was the “A Bit More” button. Pushing this dropped the toast back in for a further 30 seconds. Also useful was the “Lift and Look” button allowing the toast to briefly pop up and be inspected on its progress. It then pops back down and the toasting cycle continues uninterrupted. Less useful was the “Crumpet/Fruit Bread” button which is supposed to apply more heat to one side. I only ended up burning the item but maybe it was just “operator error”? Toast cooked evenly both sides and was consistent in colour time after time. Found the “2” setting ideal for my light toasting needs while my wife preferred the darker toasting of the “just under 4” setting. Maximum setting is “5”. I don't know what the longtime reliability will be like for a motorised drive toaster but it works consistently well at the moment. Breville supplies a 2 year replacement warranty which is reassuring. If I had to buy it again, I probably would go with the 4 slice version. It doesn't cost much more and it turns out, it would have fitted the appliance cupboard.Easy to use, quite and creates Toast
Smart Toast BTA845Our previous toaster failed to go down, i think after year of pushing that leaver finally failed. Our hope is that because this toaster does that for you, it will last longer.

Smart Toast BTA830I had to exchange this toaster twice before I was satisfied, but even then the third toaster has had a hiccough. So I listened carefully to the toaster as it was going through its start-up cycle, and realized it was probably the motorized lift mechanism that was stuck in a loop due to one of the sensors not being triggered, so I applied some gentle percussive maintenance which fixed the problem, and the toaster has been fine ever since (knock on wood). Having said this, the staff at Myer, both online and in store have been extremely helpful. OK. the third unit lasted about 5 months then the element stopped working. The motor and all the other buttons appeared to work, but the element would not heat up, so it failed to do the one thing a toaster must do..... toast. This time I returned it for a refund and have purchased a cheap toaster from Kmart for the interim. If the could fix their QC issues and the reliability I would purchase this toaster again as it did a great job while it worked. Is it too much to expect, a toaster which actually toasts well. By the way, the cheap Kmart toaster leaves the top quarter of each slice pretty much un-toasted which is a common problem I have struck, even with brand named toasters I have owned in the past.Love this toaster.
