Excellent product but stays talkie for a coupe of weeks
I have now used this product on four houses and have been very happy with the results, it is long lasting, hard wearing and gives an excellent finish to the timber it repels water very well. I have always sanded the decks before using Aquadeck as it seals everything under it and can show through. I must admit for some reason it stays tackie for a few weeks but still more than happy to use it.

Still tacky after 3 weeks!!
I really wish I read the reviews before purchasing this product. I followed the directions on the tin to the last word. I am now left with a very sticky deck that has footprints all over it. The deck is only 2 years old and it's ruined. It is a main thoroughfare to and from our house so it can't be avoided. I wish I had stuck with Sikkens decking oil.
May 10th 2018 Update: It took 4 weeks to settle but it has turned out to be the best thing I have used on my deck.

Worked great and not tacky!
I give my new deck a clean using the Cabots cleaning product. Then applied two coats of Aquadeck natural and had no problems with any tackiness? I can only imagine people are applying it on to thick and if you do its going to be tacky! Anyway I had np and my deck looks better and is protected from the elements.

Over a year has passed
Over a year ago I wrote a review on cabots aqua deck. Yes it did stay tacky for a short time, but in the products defence I did it in the middle of winter. Well over a year later I did the full on clean down using a high pressure petrol jet washer. The deck was covered in dirt, chook pooh and god knows what else. It was a brothel. Been working six days a week since after the Xmas break and this was my first chance.
It was that bad I had to use truck wash on the second go.
Well all I can say is. Fantastic. It looks great. No recoating this year.
Will redo review next year.

Black colour on wood;Looks like mildew building
Brand new deck around a pool using treated pine. Used Aquadeck as it is for wet area such as pool decks as advised. Prepared using Aquadeck cleaner. Applied Merbu Aquadeck as per instructed. Applied 3 coats. It looked good initially but was sticky. Now with torrential rain we have had mildew is appearing on the deck.
How can this be treated very dissappointed with the product.

Still tacky and patchy after two weeks
I have used this product "Natural" previously on Merbau decking and was happy with the result, tacky feel was gone after two days. looked good. I just now used tinted "Jarrah" on pine decking and the results are terrible, the surface is still tacky and the finish is patchy, light and dark patches, no matter how hard I tried to eliminate stop start marks and uneven patches it ended up looking awful. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Seven days drying still sticky.
This is the second time I have used this product on my Merbu deck. The first time it came up lovely the timber looked amazing. After roughly 18 months it was starting to look a little run down. So I went down to bunnings to purchase the same product, Cabbots Aquadec New Natural. I was informed by the staff that Cabbots have changed there formula and that it is the same stuff. We washed the deck letting it dry 24 hours then we applied the first coat waited three hours applied the second coat. The finish looked not to bad but a lot darker brown t...Read more
han the first time we stained it so I was a little disappointed in that. The next day looking at my lovely deck thinking that it has to be dry not the case, seven days later still not the case. We are to scared to walk on it as it leaves unsightly marks. As this area plays a big part of my families life very disappointed. Cabbots have you ruined my deck with your new formula. Still tacky
I first used this product in 2012 and was pleased with it. Following all the recommended instructions I cleaned the deck with deck clean & power washed it off. I recoated my deck yesterday. For me it looks good using the Natural colour but is picking up marks when walked on because it's still tacky.

Hi Brian,
Aquadeck can take up to 7 days to fully cure. If it's still sticky, we suggest only walking on the deck when essential to prevent any marking. The sticky sensation should go away with a full day of sunshine on it.

Anyone even remotely considering changing over to this product- do yourselves a favor and take a leaf from me and a Cpl others who strongly recommend you steer clear.
Application is a breeze (given you have basically idea weather conditions for 3 days) however the horrors of it looking ridiculously fake once dried are real, it also goes almost black in the high traffic areas after a short time (despite religiously cleaning it with the specified Cabots products), now the horrors of removing it which I'm currently experiencing.

Half way through doing my deck as per instructions. Wish I hadn't started. This stain is more like a bad paint and very hard to apply evenly. Yes, I am using the lambswool applicator. Disappointing so far but I will do two coats and hopefully the end result will be passable. Just such hard works and nothing like the current TV adds!

Cabot's aquadeck still tacky
Applied to merbau deck as follows:-
1. deck left to 'season' for 5 weeks (with regular hosing to assist in tannin removal)
2. applied/scrubbed with Cabot's deck clean as per video instructions
3. applied Aquadeck as per video&can instructions.
I've read other reviews and this is obviously a common problem - I would suggest instructions need more clarification...particularly when on the can it says "apply liberally", and then (in contradiction) feedback response from Cabot's to this issue is "excessive application can be an issue"!
A lot of hard work went into preparation and I am disappointed with the outcome - I would not recommend this product to others.
To finish on a positive note..the look/appearance is good.

Sticky and tacky... Will it ever dry!
I got persuaded by a lovely worker at Bunnings to use this stain around my pool as it's an "aqua deck", the sample piece looked great as I chose jarrah. We went by the instructions and after 2 hours touch dry it was sticky, waited till the next day and was still sticky and tacky as hell, it's awful cause you can't even walk on it. By the following week it remained to still feel tacky, is it ever going to dry!! It's taken me forever to prep the deck and I'm definitely not happy with the result!!

Hi Ness,
That's no good about the sticky deck. This can happen for a few reasons, including weather, application thickness and adhesion to the timber. But we know you'd mostly like to know how to fix it - so here we go!... Read more
1. If you've completed all the coats on the deck you'd like (we'd recommend 3 coats by the pool as it's what we'd consider an extreme environment), lightly scrub the deck with a 1/2 strength Deck Clean solution. In most cases this will actually remove an extremely small amount of the coating, giving it a chance to finish the drying process, a process being hindered by that top layer of coating. 2. If you've still got a couple of coats to apply, we'd recommend applying your next coat quite thinly. A thinner than usual coat should dry out easily, and provide a sound foundation for the subsequent coats. Could you let us know how you go? An unsightly plastic film on beautiful timber decking
After several years of annual oiling of my deck, I used Aquadeck after the recommended cleaning. When it rained 40+ hours later, I found that the plastic tint element of this product dissolved and pooled across the boards leaving very unsightly patches all over the deck that looked like cheap mission brown fence paint. After 2 years and no improvement in the appearance, I decided to remove it and return to natural oil. Well that's two days of my life I will never get back! Very happy with Aquadeck
Have used Aquadeck Merbau on Kwila timber deck for years and it looks great and wears well. It's a lovely rich colour and not at all orange. The type and colour of timber needs to be considered when choosing what product to use. Two coats gives the best result, and redone every year, or two years at most.

Previous Poster For This Horrible Product
Posted previously about this product. I wouldn't touch it on Kwila or Pine unless you want a glaring 'orange' deck for three years. I'll give this mob one thing..it lasts. Gave up this year and chem-blasted it. Didn't work that well but paint stripped the deck which did the trick. It's obviously paint not whatever Cabots purport it to be. Tried a patch of Wattyl. Perfect. Happy Christmas getting this rubbish off my deck but Cabots keep selling it and getting away with a not fit for purpose product.

Disappointed.
Cons
- Similar experience to last 2 posters. I applied one coat of Aquadeck which left my left painstakingly restored hardwood crossarms looking fake, orangey and devoid of character. I did a test and was unsure about the outcome but went ahead anyway.

Pros
- Easy to apply, cheap.

Don't use this product. It is terrible.
I have always used Natural decking oil (turps clean up) and decided I would give the Aquadeck a go. Bad, bad mistake. It looks terrible. Looks like I have that fake timber decking. Gives a milky look. The worst thing is that to remove this Aquadeck, it is supposed to be a nightmare. Not like the natural decking oil. Nappysan and a stiff brush.
Anybody know how to remove this Aquadeck?

Warning do not use on spotted gum
Aqua deck natural completely changes the color of spotted gum from the beautiful grey colors to a terrible orange tint, I wanted to enhance the natural look not completely to change to appearance. I feel I have been misled this should not be recommended to be used on spotted gum, it should have a Warning on the can do not use on spotted gum. It also is sticky underfoot.
My advice to anyone would be consult a professional at a paint store, do not go to bunnings.

Wouldn't buy it again
Applied one coat before deck was assembled. Top and bottom. Another coat when project finished. Another coat 6 months later and now 6 months later can't see it has been done. 3 coats in less than 12 months. Would spend money on something else. Applied on merbau and expected to last much longer than this. Protected by walls in afternoon so not in full sun all day.

For areas that are in full sun we recommend 3 coats (applied at the one time) of Aquadeck to offer your timber the best protection. To keep your decking in the best condition, we recommend you conduct regular maintenance inspections to make sure your timber is still beading water. Can you aquadeck directly over sikkens cetol product without sanding back?
2 answers
Hi Pauletta. Thanks for asking I’m not the right person to answer here - I’m not a surfaces expert. If the Sikkens is oil base then you might need to sand. I found the Cabots deck prep solution to work as it promised but I’ve only used cabots over cabots. Sorry not to be more helpful.

Hi Pauletta,
Thanks so much for your question. Unfortunately the Aquadeck is not suited to go over a Sikkens coating.
There is a coating system that is available in the Intergrain range, I recommend giving 1800 630 285 a call to discuss this further - as it is quite detailed.

Hi, Bit of a long story. Two years ago I purchased 10L of Aquadeck Kwila. Used it on my old veranda and I was satisfied with the results. The remainder was then stored in an outside shed. I noticed it got very hot in the shed during summer so I moved the paint to a cooler location after a few months. I also have a cabin with a new pine deck and decided to stain it during lock down. I used the balance of the old stain on the first coat. I would describe the colour of the stain in the Pail as dark chocolate. I bought a new 10L pail and found that the colour was what I would describe as translucent milk chocolate. I applied two more coats and find that the first coat is clearly visible and hence appears blotchy. I would like a fix to my problem. I don't consider your product is to blame, but I need help with a blotchy deck!

Hi Gavin,
Glad to hear that you're happy with the finish of the Aquadeck!
To help clean the timber to remove any stubborn dust/dirt - take a look at the Cabot's Deck Wash;
https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-deck-wash
This cleaner is diluted into water and scrubbed on to the surface of the timber. The Deck Wash is a non abrasive cleaner designed to go hand in hand with our coatings to keep them looking clean and fresh in between coats.
