Hi Maya,

The Cabothane Clear is not a food safe coating.
For something like bowls, we do not have a suitable coating in the Cabot's range.

You can take a look at the Orange Oil http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/products/interior/product-details/1511
Or the Kitchen Timber Oil http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/products/interior/product-details/1527
That is available in the Feast Watson range. These may be more suited for you.

Cabothane Clear Oil Based

This expectation with this product is most disappointing. Preparation as per the book. First coat reasonable. Light sand and apply second coat which wont brush out, dries almost immediately. Tried various ratios of dilution with turpentine with no improvement. Sanded back to bare wood and started again. Same disappointing result. Have gone through two tins 500ml and 250ml. The contents of one looded to be purple in colour. Will go to another product. Purchased from Bunnings Maitland NSW.

Cabothane Clear Oil Based

Can i use a spray gun to apply cabots oil based stain and varnish coco black in color

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Dave,

We do not recommend spraying the stain and varnish, as it does need to penetrate the timber.
If you were to choose to spray it, we recommend back brushing the coating into the timber so the Stain is able to penetrate the timber.
We generally recommend applying by using a good quality brush, or a short nap roller.

Cabothane Clear Oil Based

Hi,
We want to stain, seal and protect the edge of plywood furniture. Wondering if a mix of Tung Oil and Cabothane would work or can Cabothane Clear Oil Based be tinted to give a good dark penetrating seal. This is a production application where multiple coats and time between coats is not really an option.
Thanks for your time, thoughts and help.

500ml coverage bare pine please

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your question. The 500ml size of the Oil based Cabothane will cover approx 8m2.
The Cabothane is a 3 coat system - so with 3 coats, the approximate coverage is 2.6m2.

This however does depend on the porosity of the timber, you may find that you could get a little less coverage out of the first coat.

If you would like to discuss this further, or have any other questions please give us a call on 1800 011 006.

Cabothane Clear Oil Based

Hi. I’ve used the product on a renovated bathroom unit (laminate). I used a high quality bristle brush as recommended but it has dried unevenly with brush marks showing even though final strokes were all one way with the grain. In addition, the first coat had a yellow tinge (cabinet is white) and after applying second coat it is even more yellow. It looks terrible and I’m loath to apply a third coat. Advice please?

Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for reaching out to us! To help with those brush strokes a light sand in between coats with a fine grit sandpaper will help even things out.
As for the yellow tinge - unfortunately this is a normal occurrence in an oil based product, they will all yellow naturally.

I want to revitalise an oregon bench top next to a kitchen sink. It gets wet and shows bare wood in parts. The original varnish (polyurethane?) has peeled off in places. I can repair and restain the exposed timber but WHICH FINISH SHOULD I USE? This will need to cover bare wood and (sanded?) polyurethane.

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Paul,

For best results to ensure the timber has a uniformed finish and so the new coating will adhere well, I recommend sanding all of the timber back to bare.
Once that is done you can apply the Water based Benchtop Clear https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-benchtop-clear.

The Benchtop Clear is a highly durable, heat (up to 100 degrees) and stain resistant, fast drying varnish that is safe for use on living area and kitchen timber bench tops when the surface is fully cured. Once fully cured, it is resistant to chemicals, oils and heat from hot cups/mugs.
Being a water based coating, the Benchtop Clear will not yellow over time unlike traditional oil based coatings.
While it is not a water proof coating, it is water repellent. The timber will need to be re-coated down the track when you notice that the surface is becoming tired and worn or if you notice water being able to penetrate the timber's surface.

Can this product be sprayed on

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your question!
Yes, you can spray the oil based Cabothane with an air spray gun. If you feel like the Cabothane needs to be thinned for spraying, you can do so with Mineral Turps - but add no more than 10% of the Mineral Turps.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Yes, you will find that the Cabothane Oil based will yellow over time.
If you are after a clear polyurethane that will not yellow over time, have a look at the Cabothane in the water based.

I have applied oil-based cabothane to a table that had been coated with oil-based cutex stain. The cutex stain was applied the day before, had soaked in and been sanded with 240 grade paper.
It’s 12hrs later and the cabothane has not dried. I have had a fan on it, temp is mid 20degrees Celsius.
Hoping it will eventually dry?
Any thoughts?

Cabothane Clear Oil Based

Hi
I wish to recoat our kitchen benchtop with a semi gloss clear. The original coat is an oil based gloss clear over red iron bark, around maybe 15 years old. Still in good condition but wearing thin in a couple of places. I have subsequently built an island bench with a mixture of Jarrah top and red iron bark edges. I intend to stain this benchtop to bring the colours together. The original benchtops in red iron bark are the deepest red brow, deeper than the new jarrah benchtop. Can you recommend a clear oil based product and if possible a stain which I can use?
Thanks in anticipation
Kerry

Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Kerry,

We have a product called Benchtop Clear which will give you a food safe finish, which means that if food was left on the coating, the coating would be unlikely to leach anything that is hazardous to health, but it is water based.

If you are set on using an Oil based product, you can use either the Cabothane in the Oil Based https://cabots.com.au/product-listing/product-detail/cabots-cabothane-clear-oil-based or the CFP in the Oil Based https://cabots.com.au/product-listing/product-detail/cabots-cfp-floor-oil-based
Both of these products are available in gloss, satin and matt finishes.

Both of these products were recommend for a benchtop prior to the Benchtop Clear being formulated without any issues in terms of food contamination, etc.
Benchtop Clear was formulated to improve even on these benchmarks.

As for colour option, I will send through to you a link to the Interior Brochure so you can have a look at the colours available.
You can use the oil based stain and put these clear oil based coatings over the top.
Alternatively if you chose to go for the Benchtop Clear, just be mindful to use a water based stain.

Cheers

Hi, I’ve made a cot out of jarrah and would like to apply the finish using a spray gun, are Cabot’s finishes able to be applied as a spray and if so what thinner would I use with an oil based finish?

The product information for Cabot's Cabothane clear (water-based) indicates that it can be applied either with a brush or a spray gun (current as of Jan 28, 2022). Their data sheet lists no specific requirements re spraying, other than to recommend back-spraying (admittedly I don't know what that is).

If this cannot be done is there another product you can suggest.

I have used the exterior clear spraypack over a spray painted wood surface with good results, but i am wondering if i can use 'Cabot's 500ml Cabothane Clear Gloss Oil Based Timber Varnish' (tin version) over a spray painted wood surface? I just want a clear coat of polyurethane. I am concerned that by applying the cabothane oil based with a foam roller, that i will dissolve the spray paint on the surface given that the poly is oil based... I would appreciate some help with this question. thank you.
