It went yellow and ruined the project!

published

As in title. I applied the product, on the tin it states ‘non yellowing’ and it turned the item yellow. Simply a waste of money and time so back to Bunnings I go! To return the item

Very poor product. Shouldnt be on sale

published

Bought from Bunnings. The satin one is super high gloss and doesn’t look satin at all. Sticks to the bottom of the tin super hard to fully mix. I’ve used on a white wash acacia table bad results. Used on pine stained wood better but way below what I expected. Has bits in that are hard to work out. Not impress won’t buy again or ever recommend.

Purchased in January 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for A$100.00.

Should be taken off the market

published

Even after much stirring this product is still has a thick glue consistency. While brushing it on it has "bits" in it that are hard to work out of the surface. Dries with a rough finish, almost like has sand in it. Cabots should be ashamed of selling this dud product, take it off the market. You have lost me as a customer forever.

Great for decoupage

published

This is the most consistent water based varnish for Decoupage, I have some pieces still looking good after 25 years. Interestingly a couple of these, I have used black and white photocopies of my art, these have not discolored under about 30 coats of varnish. I leave it 24 hours between coat coats before sanding lightly and applying another coat. All paints and glue I use are water based.
I have also used other product on market for decoupage but found the results over time become cloudy and almost want to peel off the cut outs where it starts to deteriorate around edges

Problems in the tin

published

Bought a 1 litre tin of satin water based from Bunnings. When I opened it it looked like a beige stringy jelly was floating on the top. I didn’t stir this in because I assumed it was semi set and I didn’t want to ruin the remainder. By the time I had removed the stringy jellified bits I was down 25%. Stirred the remainder but found the sediment at the bottom of the tin very stiff and hard to mix in. I’m going to take it back to Bunnings and swap for the very consistent oil based product which (apart from being purple!) does a good job.

Purchased in June 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for A$48.80.

Do not use on painted surfaces

published

Hard to mix well soo many solids in the bottom, put it over a painted table top and it absolutely ruined it. Dragged the paint, caused it to come off left brush strokes. Tried a second coat after 3 hours and it lifted up the first coat causing scratch marks. Worst clear coat I have ever used

Cabothane water base varnish in Matt

published

This is an excellent product
Fast drying and easy to apply
It’s milky white but when applied is clear
I applied 3 coats on my dining table that I sanded right back to bare wood .I lightly sanded in between coats but probably only needed 2 coats.
It says stir really well do not shake and continue stirring as your doing your project. It didn’t have a high odour.
I picked Matt not gloss and I love the look .
The best product I’ve used for indoor furniture.

Works well

published

I bought the satin water based product and found it easy to follow the instructions. I stirred it well and had no problems applying it with a roller. It dried fast and recoating many times waiting the recommended time between each coat resulted in no problems. I ensured I was using it under the conditions outlined so did not have any issues at all and would be happy to buy it again.

Why is this product still on the market?

published

For the past month I have been restoring a lovely old oak cabinet and today was the great day of starting the clear finish. Went to Bunnings and bought a water based matt finish clear coat and opened to find the gluggy product. Stirred and stirred for ages until I thought it was ready then applied to find it dry in an uneven and very white finish.
I'm guessing that I haven't stirred it enough but after throwing my brush down and reading the many negative reviews on this product it appears to have many flaws which other similar products don't have.
The decision now is deciding whether to sand it back and start again after even more stirring or just throw the can and buy another brand which will work without fail.

Cabot's Benchtop Clear

published

With the right preparation, Cabot's Bench top clear is a fantastic product. I've just redone my kitchen Bench tops, and they've finished better than when I first bought them. As long as you remember to keep stirring every few minutes, you will be wonderfully surprised at the ease of application and the smooth even coverage. Just make sure they are clear of any old polish etc, and a light sand with 240 between coats and you won't find a better product in my mind.

I did not have a problem with this product (Satin)

published

I never follow instructions on tins. I put three heavy metal nuts in the tin and shook it vigorously for 5 minutes. And I added some stain and a little water to make it more dilute. It worked perfectly. I made some shelves with messmate and they look great. It dries fast and is easy to work with. I also had an old tin of it on the shelf and that was fine too after a simlar vigourous shake with some bits of metal in the bottom of the tin. Don't know why they say stir the tin but don't shake it? Sounds a bit silly. Since I shook it like hell with the nuts in the tin, and it worked well.

Gloss

published

Very difficult to use.
Sanded tabletop back to bare wood, mixed and applied as directed.
No matter how wet or dry the clear is applied, Impossible to get a satisfactory finish.
Brush, spray, even tried rollers (not recommended by manufacturer) results all similar.
Apply dry, the finish matts out and has dry overlap.
Apply wet, and the finish glugs together appears lumpy.
I've been refinishing furniture for decades and never had such a difficult time achieving a finish.
2 tins of 1L clear later, and I'm still wondering the best way forward without stripping the table top again.
Might be ok for small jobs, but for anything of size, forget it.
Maybe the oil based version is better.

It’s so versitle sticks like crazy and crystal clear wonderful product.

published

I use it on all my art work canvas, steel (stainless steel sculptures obviously not recommended) timber and over acrylic paint. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and is fabulous. Most my stuff is interior. And it’s really lasted awesomely. I’m about to coat my wooden vanity and kitchen top. Sorry Cabot’s I know it’s out of spec but it’s that good.

Matt Cabothane

published

I am not happy. I used the water based Matt Cabothane as directed - stirred not shaken. When it turned out with a satin finish instead of matt the local Mitre 10 guy rang Cabots who said I hadn't stirred long enough. So he put it in the shaking machine which fixed that problem. The second issue is that after leaving to dry for 14 hours I tried to give it a light sand before I applied the next coat but the paint comes off onto the sand paper suggesting that it is very poor paint or it isn't dry so I have to sand the whole hall table down again - not happy. Either way I have had enough and will be looking for another brand.

Cabothane Clear Water base - expired batch

published

Bought water satin base for my kitchen benches as recommended by Bunnings in Moorabbin. Followed instrux however, noticed that it took ages to mix. Got to a consistency that I thought was good. Did first coat after lightly sanding. Following day, put 2nd coat on. Waited the usual time for drying. Noticed, before applying 3rd coat, it was bubbly and peeling!! Noticed the underside of the can NCI 14-Mar 17 also, the small can I used was dated 0606/17. Both out of date (I bought on 21/09/17). Not happy at all with all the work I put in preparing the benches. I expect a refund from Bunnings even though I threw out the receipt!! Stick to traditional Wattyl Estapol as suggested by friends.

Not happy partly my fault, I shook the can, did not stir, result was had used some, before I found the sludge in the bottom of the can, so I stirred up the remainder, now I have half with a reasonable finish and the other half cloudy. Can I just second coat? and hope it looks ok. May I suggest that you use larger font for the important information, because even with my glasses on it is difficult to read anything on the can.

Opened the can, stired and stired, replaced the lid and gave it a good shake and still the consistency was horrible.. looked like it had started going off.. I then checked the expiry date and it looks like Bunnings sold me an out of date can, exp 2/2/17. Not happy at all.

Cabothane Clear Water Based

Hello. I used a Cabothane stain, followed by 4 coats of Cabothane satin finish to refinish my old dining table. It looks absolutely amazing. What timeframe would you recommend for curing, prior to using the table again please? I’ve put in too much work to ruin it now

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hello Yvonne!

So glad to hear that you're happy with the results of the stain and Cabothane!
The Cabothane will cure after 7 days after the final coat was applied, in cooler conditions it can take up to 14 days for a full cure.

If you have used the water based Cabothane, you may notice some white rings appear on the surface of the coating when hot or cold things are placed on the surface - the only ill effect of this is that it does not look very nice. This will not damage or compromise the durability of the coating. As the coating beings to cure, these marks will no longer appear on the surface of the coating.

i have painted terracotta pots with an acrylic design and painting over the top (so they can be put in the garden), with cabot's gloss or mat clear exterior but the varnish goes grainy and sometimes cloudy. I do not paint when it's humid.
