I did not have a problem with this product (Satin)
I never follow instructions on tins. I put three heavy metal nuts in the tin and shook it vigorously for 5 minutes. And I added some stain and a little water to make it more dilute. It worked perfectly. I made some shelves with messmate and they look great. It dries fast and is easy to work with. I also had an old tin of it on the shelf and that was fine too after a simlar vigourous shake with some bits of metal in the bottom of the tin. Don't know why they say stir the tin but don't shake it? Sounds a bit silly. Since I shook it like hell with the nuts in the tin, and it worked well.

Absolutely Terrible
I purchased a 4L tin of Matt to do a large dining table. Sanding in between coats instead of 3 coats it took at least 12 attempts at a final coat. Using a brush to start with there were always brush marks in the final coat. Then I tried a 170mm foam roller and once again overlapping marks. Thinking it may have been the hot weather, temps not over 30c, that was causing my problems I waited till it was cooler at night but was still having the same problems. I had to purchase more clear so I got a 500ml tin but when I went to mix it, it was a purp...Read more
le colour, not the honey looking colour that I had always used so I took it back and exchanged it. this time I used a 230mm roller but this coat seemed to take forever to dry. Turns out that it was gloss clear packaged in a Matt tin. I exchanged the leftovers for a new tin with a different batch number. Finally, a job that should have taken only a few days took almost a month to finish costing me twice as much as it should have with all the sanding discs and painting accessories. Never again will I use or recommend your products.1 comment

Gloss
Very difficult to use.
Sanded tabletop back to bare wood, mixed and applied as directed.
No matter how wet or dry the clear is applied, Impossible to get a satisfactory finish.
Brush, spray, even tried rollers (not recommended by manufacturer) results all similar.
Apply dry, the finish matts out and has dry overlap.
Apply wet, and the finish glugs together appears lumpy.
I've been refinishing furniture for decades and never had such a difficult time achieving a finish.
2 tins of 1L clear later, and I'm still wondering the best way forward without stripping the table top again.
Might be ok for small jobs, but for anything of size, forget it.
Maybe the oil based version is better.

It’s so versitle sticks like crazy and crystal clear wonderful product.
I use it on all my art work canvas, steel (stainless steel sculptures obviously not recommended) timber and over acrylic paint. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and is fabulous. Most my stuff is interior. And it’s really lasted awesomely. I’m about to coat my wooden vanity and kitchen top. Sorry Cabot’s I know it’s out of spec but it’s that good.

Matt Cabothane
I am not happy. I used the water based Matt Cabothane as directed - stirred not shaken. When it turned out with a satin finish instead of matt the local Mitre 10 guy rang Cabots who said I hadn't stirred long enough. So he put it in the shaking machine which fixed that problem. The second issue is that after leaving to dry for 14 hours I tried to give it a light sand before I applied the next coat but the paint comes off onto the sand paper suggesting that it is very poor paint or it isn't dry so I have to sand the whole hall table down again - not happy. Either way I have had enough and will be looking for another brand.

Cabothane Clear Water base - expired batch
Bought water satin base for my kitchen benches as recommended by Bunnings in Moorabbin. Followed instrux however, noticed that it took ages to mix. Got to a consistency that I thought was good. Did first coat after lightly sanding. Following day, put 2nd coat on. Waited the usual time for drying. Noticed, before applying 3rd coat, it was bubbly and peeling!! Noticed the underside of the can NCI 14-Mar 17 also, the small can I used was dated 0606/17. Both out of date (I bought on 21/09/17). Not happy at all with all the work I put in preparing the benches. I expect a refund from Bunnings even though I threw out the receipt!! Stick to traditional Wattyl Estapol as suggested by friends.

Oops, used wrong product
I inadvertantly used the Cabothane Clear for my wooden floors instead of the CFP product.
The boards do look great with 2 coats of Cabothane. But they are for walking on.
As the floors are in my shed and not my actually home, I am inclined not to correct my error and just see what happens.
Can someone suggest what might occur if I walk on the coated floorboards?
Thanks, John

Cabothane is not designed for walk on surfaces. It simply doesn't offer the scratch resistance and durability offered by our flooring products, such as CFP.

Cabothane Clear Water Based Matt
Not happy partly my fault, I shook the can, did not stir, result was had used some, before I found the sludge in the bottom of the can, so I stirred up the remainder, now I have half with a reasonable finish and the other half cloudy. Can I just second coat? and hope it looks ok. May I suggest that you use larger font for the important information, because even with my glasses on it is difficult to read anything on the can.

Opened the can, stired and stired, replaced the lid and gave it a good shake and still the consistency was horrible.. looked like it had started going off.. I then checked the expiry date and it looks like Bunnings sold me an out of date can, exp 2/2/17. Not happy at all.

Using Cabot's oil based Matt finish on a table. First layer went on fine, looked great. Second layer was bubbly and scabby. Had to start again and sand back.
I thought it might have been some terbs contamination the first time, so put the did the same again. Same terrible result.

Very poor result
I am in the process of finishing a recycled jarrah bathroom cabinet with Cabots Cabothane matt finish and have gotten to the point where I will need to strip it back and re-do it. Not sure if this is par for the course with this product as its the first (and last) time I have used it.......it dries fairly quickly for a polyeurethane so it makes it difficult to get a even coat.....wont smooth and level easily and then it takes a long time to fully harden......after 24hrs its still soft enough to leave finger prints??? THE BEST product I have used in years. Do NOT understand negative reviews.
After reading the negative reveiws on here I was very hesitant to buy. But I've used other cabots products before and not had an issue so I bought it anyway, and must I say THANK GOD I did. Now I am by no means an experienced DIYer. I believe the reason I have such excellent results is that
A) I followed the instructions on the can to a T. And
B) my local hardware has a VERY knowledgeable staff member who helped me choose the correct product for the job - gloss, and water based so it doesn't darken wood.

So disappointed
Upon opening the can, was unsure of what my raw new coffee table would look like after painting it with this white gluggy glue like stuff! Followed the directions & stirred & stirred, applied it to my furniture & was still very wary, it was stringy, kept stirring & applying hoping that once it dried it might improve, but after 2 coats it is rough like sandpaper, I am so disappointed & will not buy this again. Purchased from Bunnings 1st April 2017 (feel like an April fool!) date on bottom of can 06/08/16 Cabothane Clear water based.

Disappointing
I purchased satin finish water based cabothane clear from Bunnings on 10/3/2017.
The consistency is like partially set jelly. Strings come off the bottom of the brush when removing from the tin. Needless to say the finish is very disappointing. Will need to find an alternative brand, sand back and start over. Wish I had read reviews first
Date on tin is 12/10/2016.

Lovely satin finish
Needs to be properly mixed before use. Very important! Goes on smoothly and dries quickly between coats.
Applied with a sponge applicator.over an acrylic painted tabletop surface Using a brush left too many marks.
I put on a total of eight lightly applied coats, allowing at least 2 hours between 1st and 2nd coats, then waited 24 hours before applying coats 3 and 4. Another 36 hours before 5 and 6, then a week before 7 and 8. It's not a glass-like finish, but I wasn't going for that anyway. Colours shine through nicely and I'm very happy with the result.

I used cabothane clear gloss on side table antique restoration with ornate trim Jacobean legs. After meticulously sanding and wiping over with damp cloth great colour timber when wet. Obviously let peice dry, then with much anticipation applied with brush clear coat gloss made timber so dark all the beautiful timber grain was lost and ornate edging was as deminished. Very disappointed all the hard work painstaking restoring it back to former glory destroyed. I even asked sales person at Bunnings expert advice to recommend this horrible product he assured me it will enhance grain and a brilliant gloss. Fail on both regards. Wasted time and money :(

Awful product
I wanted a water based varnish to apply to a new wooden balustrade. The product had congealed in the bottom of the can and I spent a long time stirring to achieve a consistency that was not akin to gluggy glue. After the first coat, the finish was very rough so I sanded until it was completely smooth. However, after the second coat the rough finish has returned. I am very unhappy with this product and now have a handrail which feels terribly coarse and rough when held. I would never buy this product again.

Worked as expected but I had to stir for an hour
This stuff was easy to brush onto a reclaimed jarrah project and left a good finish after just two coats with a light sand in between.
However, when I opened the tin, at least 1/4 of the product was solid at the bottom of the tin. Having read a couple of reviews I figured i'd just keep stirring until it was a homogeneous liquid. It worked, the solid stuff slowly dissolved. it did take over an hour before I was satisfied that all solids were gone, and a bit of elbow grease to initially break up the stuff.
Also, for part of my project I use...Read more
d this clear over white paint. (I contacted Cabot's prior for help - and they assured me it would be fine as long as the paint had fully cured.) More than a week after painting, I applied the clear and found that it had a very faint yellowish tint, which was a little disappointing. TLDR: Works fine, be prepared to stir, I don't recommend over paint.1 comment

We're sorry you've had to stir for such a long time. Cabothane can settle in the can if left on the shelf for too long, and this is what would have occurred here. As for the slight yellow tint, Oil Based Cabothane does have a slight yellow to it, this is a property of a being oil based. While Oil Based Cabothane is perfect for timber becasue it brings out the warmth in the grain, it can appear slightly yellow over white painted surfaces. Water Based Cabothane will not have these same properties, however it will not bring out the warmth of timber. If you have any further questions, please call us on 1800 011 006. not over chalk paint !!
Not easy to apply & leaves brush marks over chalk paint.we were advised this would leave a gloss finish, it leaves a shiny sandpaper finish . Sanding back did not work either, is there a high gloss enamel clear available that will go over cabothane clear.we were told it would leave a heavy gloss finish & it doesn't ?

Hi Maya,
The Cabothane Clear is not a food safe coating.
For something like bowls, we do not have a suitable coating in the Cabot's range.
You can take a look at the Orange Oil http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/products/interior/product-details/1511
Or the Kitchen Timber Oil http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/products/interior/product-details/1527
That is available in the Feast Watson range. These may be more suited for you.
