Perfect product to ruin your hard work
Stay clear of this crap paint on glue. A clear coat should be nice and smooth to apply but this product is like applying glue. Thanks Cabots! Now I have to sand off your clear liquid tar and start again. Go back to the drawing board, make an easy to use product and stop ruining people's projects.

Very pleased with results.
I'm applying water-based Cabothane over timber that has been stained and sealed with Danish Oil, and I'm very pleased with the results. The timber retains the deep silky lustre brought out by the Danish Oil, which I've not been able to achieve previously with standard polyurethane, which leaves a slightly dulled, yellow-tinted finish.
I've read the other reviews on this page and can only conclude that the negative criticisms are a result of expecting a water-based product to behave like oil-based polyurethane. Where others have criticised ho...Read more
w quickly this stuff dries, this feature is a definite plus for my appllications. My work requires an entirely dust free environment if I use oil-based polyurethane, as each coat must be allowed to dry for up to 30 mins before the next coat, by which time so much airborne dust has settled on the coating that I have to carefully pick off or sand sections and do continuous patch-ups. And oil-based polyurethanes don't seem to sand back very well unless left to dry for a few days. Very inconvenient. This water-based version dries within a few minutes, and very little dust touches the surface in time to get stuck. It is also very clear, whereas oil based versions have a noticeable yellow tinge and give the timber a dull appearance. Sanding back is very easy, if required. Where slower drying times are preferable, a simple solution is to add water. This will require additional coats, but the thinner consistency allows for very subtle streak-free patch ups. This product solves a lot of issues caused by oil-based versions.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Trick is in the application
I used cabothane clear water based after two coats of cabots water based stain and varnish. At first I had terrible results with this product. I am in Darwin and applying it in 30+ degree heat and extreme humidity, needless to say it was drying very very quickly.
First coat was very streaky, cloudy white coverage and lots of brush marks. I enquired at Bunnings paint dept about how to use it and after some good advice came back with quite good results:
1. Use a big brush; 2. Dab the varnish on with a loaded brush don't wipe off but make sure ...Read more

Far from good!
Must agree with other reviews, pretty crook product despite me persevering in the hope of getting it better.
Third time with these products and next to no improvement along the way despite adopting a different approach each time. Best result was my present project (coffee table in radiata) with Stain and Varnish (Brazilian Roast) applied with a good quality bristle brush. Four coats of stain and varnish were necessary followed by two coats of clear. Product dries far too quickly for brush marks to settle out and does not demonstrate great du...Read more
rability even after months of hardening time. Its oil based for me from here on, full stop! Short recoat time Poor coverage, inadequate application time for an even finish, brush marks impossible to avoid.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Cabot's Cabothane Water Based
Followed instructions on tin and white streaks appeared in some parts around edges of timber. I had used the Cabot's Water Based Stain which came up well after 3 coats on a raw pine table top but when it came to the clear finish it was quite difficult to use. Sanded back the top a second time as I am a bit of a perfectionist and repeated the whole process again but the same result. I made sure the finish was well mixed and applied on a day that was in the 20's just in case this was a contributing factor. Will definitely not use this again. Had more success with all in one stain and varnish products.
The Stain was good in this brand. Options of being able to purchase different sized tins was good
Clear finish in water base is not reliable.

This stuff is OK
Usually I would have used an oil based laquer but this was for a DIY home brew cabinet where I didn't want the scent of turpentine to affect the process.. Why a water based paint should cost twice as much as an oil based one is beyond me.. When I tackled the paintstore guys on this they said it was you have to pay for the conveniece of washing up in water.. As if..!! I typically throw away the brushes after a paint job.. Anyway.. this water based stuff is like working with congealed seminal fluid.. Nasty, and if you know what I mean, ...Read more
you seriously need counselling.. haha.. Once you get the blobs smoothed out, it does a good job.. Happy painting... Applies OK even if it looks like [censored word removed].. Twice the price of oil pased lacquerSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Poor product result and bad customer service.
This product states that it is highly durable. I used this as instructed, as a top coat over Cabot's water based interior stain. After the last coat I allowed it to cue for 3 days. When I picked up the painted table to move it white marks appeared everywhere the table was touched. I called Cabot's and was told that it was my fault I should have left the table for a week ( it does not state this on the tin)and if it still made white marks do not touch it for even longer. Also if I (the customer) did not apply it at the correct micron level then ...Read more
the product satisfaction guarantee did not apply. In the end he said basically it was not his problem. There is satisfaction guarantee printed on the tin. Bad satisfaction warranty service, did not perform as indicated.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Hello. I used a Cabothane stain, followed by 4 coats of Cabothane satin finish to refinish my old dining table. It looks absolutely amazing. What timeframe would you recommend for curing, prior to using the table again please? I’ve put in too much work to ruin it now

Hi Maya,
The Cabothane Clear is not a food safe coating.
For something like bowls, we do not have a suitable coating in the Cabot's range.
You can take a look at the Orange Oil http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/products/interior/product-details/1511
Or the Kitchen Timber Oil http://www.feastwatson.com.au/consumer/products/interior/product-details/1527
That is available in the Feast Watson range. These may be more suited for you.
