Hello there Heather,
Always lovely to know of great positive results with any of our quality Cabot's products.
The Cabot's CFP Floor Clear Oil or water-based are certainly exceptional interior timber coating products.

The Cabot's CFP is not formulated for exterior applications but generally, if an oil based coating has bubbles/bubbled on setting dry, it's usually due to shaking the can or improper brush, pad or nap roller prep,or both.
It's best to first soak the brush, pad or nap roller in mineral turpentine for oil-based polyurethane, or in water, for water-based polyurethane.
Just be sure to remove any excess turpentine or water after soaking, onto a clean cloth as they only need to be damp for a clean application.
If on the other hand the oil based CFP coating is bubbling on application, it will be due to a seen or unseen surface contaminant that's caused a reaction in most cases.

To rectify any micro bubbles on clear coat finish once dry, it's a process of sanding the surface down evenly, using a fine 400 - 600 grit sandpaper. Then carefully vacuum and wipe away the sanding dust with a damp clean lint free cloth and let the surface dry.
Once dry - Apply one last coat of the CFP clear as per the application prep outlined.
Please be sure to stir the CFP oil based with a clean flat stirring paddle and avoid shaking the can or applying it over exterior timber surfaces.

While at Bunnings I asked a team member for a the best roller to apply this product and was handed a sheepskin roller which I used for the first coat. I didn’t notice it was a 20 nap roller until after the first coat which resulted in an uneven finish.
If I apply the second coat using a 6 or 10 nap roller, or an applicator, will it even out and become smooth OR do I need to sand back to raw timber again?

If you were applying a gloss finish it might require a cut with a 120 grit then 160/180 grit pad on a Xander-Polisher (Kennards hire). Dry Vacuum then damp mop. Dry, then Roll on using a Monarch "Doors, Trims and Cupboards 4mm Extra Microfibre" roller cover. Apply coats in opposite directions until satisfied with result!

Hi. We've laid a new Tassie Oak hardwood floor that we'd like to finish with Cabots CFP Floor. Questions is, is there a way to age the new timber prior to adding the finish (or will the timber continue to age underneath)?

I don’t know if Cabots/Feast Watson carry an “ageing” product.
Most of my experience has been with Peerless-JAL, where I was re-finishing gym floors.
I do know there is a product to “age” new repairs to parquetry before finishing. Perhaps ring them, as their Technical guys are pretty switched on!

CFP Floor Water Based

can I paint water-based CFP over the
floor with OIL based CFP

1 answer
Cabot's
Feast WatsonCabot's

Hello there Karuna,
If you are looking to apply the water-based Cabot's CFP Floor clear over a dry previous oil-based CFP Floor coating, then you can certainly do so.

You will need to first horoughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry.
Apply one coat of water-based CFP to a small test area of the coated clean dry floor.
Allow to dry for 3 hours.
Press/rub down some clear sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly.
If the water-based coating comes off, you will need to sand back the older coated surface further to achieve a dulled down even smooth surface, in order for the water based CFP Floor clear to adhere with greater strength.
You can lightly sand with a 180 - 240 grit paper.
Just be sure to remove any sanding dust with a vacuum and then wipe down the surface area with the Cabot's Floor Clean as per label instructions and leave to dry.
https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-floor-clean/

Please note - The same process applies in the reverse if you wished to apply the oil-based CFP Floor clear over a clean dry, previous water based CFP Floor coating, but will need to allow the oil based adhesion test coat to dry for at least 12hours before applying the sticky tape rub down and fast removal test.

Can I use a steam mop on floorboards sealed with Cabots CFP water based mat finish?

3 answers

Feast WatsonCabot's

Hi there Lah,
You can use warm water with a sponge squeeze mop ideally to clean your CFP floor coated expanse.
It's best to avoid the very hot steam pressure over coated timber floors via steam mops unless you have a specific steam mop that allows you to adjust the heat setting to low.
The best cleaning maintenance over an oil or water based Cabot's CFP Floor coating is to apply the handy Cabot's Floor Clean all-purpose floor cleaner,as per label instructions. It’s special formulation has been designed to act as a fast-acting cleaner, cutting through grease and grime.
Ideal for use before preparing timber for a coat, or for rejuvenating and prolonging the life of your coated timber floor coatings.

Wow quick response thank you. Is it just recommended as best practice to clean this way or does this mean the steam mops without a dial are actually likely to strip the sealant? Thanks so much

Cabot's
Feast WatsonCabot's

A pleasure to be of assistance to you Lah.
It's generally best practice as per cleaning guides provided.
The steam mops that have a single, very high heat setting can often be problematic in potentially getting high heat moisture between the floorboard joins and potentially lifting coatings at times as well as trapping moisture which not ideal in any timber application. High heat steam mops can also cause issues to laminated floorboards depending on the quality of the boards being used.
A low to medium heat is best and will do a great job combined with the Cabot's Floor Clean,as per label instructions.

Many thanks again and all the best with your floor maintenance.

Hi there,

We are on our 3rd coat of the oil based varnish. We aren't too sure when we can put back our furniture.. Is it 24hrs or can we return them back after the 3rd coat is dry 12hrs?

Feast WatsonCabot's

Hello Ama and thank you for your question.
It's best to allow 3-5 days for normal foot traffic and furniture replacement (Depending on coat thickness and air/surface temperature) after the final third coat of the Cabot's CFP Floor clear, oil or water based.
That way you can be sure the compounds have been totally released during the curing time and the surface is a nice solid finish for direct weight items.
The final coat is fine for light foot traffic after 24hours.

Many thanks,
Vinnie :)

I have a large hard wood floor that was stained with mahogany and finished with a water based polyurethane coating. The majority of the floor is still well coated however, some high traffic areas have worn through the poly as well the stain. As a result I will be doing some restoration in these areas, retaining and attempting to blend the color.

My question can I apply your cfp product directly to the newly stained area as well as over the existing polyurethane. Reading about your product I would think the answer is yes.

Any advice would and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Cabot's
Feast WatsonCabot's

Hello there Gary,
Yes, you are quite correct!
You can certainly apply the durable Cabot's CFP Floor clear water based over your current protective coating.
You will first need to thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry. https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-floor-clean/
Then apply one coat of the water based CFP clear to a small test area.
Allow to dry for 3 - 4 hours.
Press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly.
If the coating comes off, sand back further with a 240 - 300 grit sandpaper to a sound smooth surface finish.
Just be sure to gently vacuum away the sanding residue and wipe down with a damp clean cloth, let dry.

Please note - To achieve a nice blended continuity over the worn floor section, it's best to first apply one even smooth coat over that dry refreshed stain section, with the CFP Floor clear.
Once that first CFP coating has dried, you can then apply the ensuing CFP Floor clear coats over two-three board lengths at a time over your floor expanse, using a quality roller up to the wet cut in edge.

Here's a handy Cabot's How To Video should you need to refer to the floor board process as you go. https://youtu.be/jiOJ8EkWRGQ

Hello John,

We don't recommend the use of Spray application for the CFP.
We recommend applying the CFP with a pad applicator as this will ensure the correct film thickness to give the durability for a walk on surface.

Hi I'm having trouble with this varnish over pine flooring. It went on beautifully but after two weeks when we cleaned it (with very minimal water) it went cloudy. This cloudiness hasn't gone away after another two weeks. It's very disappointing. We used satin in the bedrooms and gloss in the living but had the same trouble with both. Any idea why it's still absorbing water and going cloudy? The temperature has been over 25 degrees for the whole time. Will this cloudy appearance go away?

Hi,
The background - I have an existing hardwood floor that has been coated many decades ago and in places that coating has worn off. Many out of the way areas are as pristine as they day they were coated. I have cleaned and sanded the worn areas pretty much back to bare timber and lightly sanding all other areas.
The question - Do I use CPF water or oil based?
Many thanks

Leah P.Cabot's

Hi there!

We would recommend at taking a look at using the Water Based CFP, as this can be applied over the top of existing coatings. You will however need to do a small adhesion test first to ensure the coating will adhere well.

Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean and allow to dry.
Apply one coat of the Water Based CFP to a small test area and allow to dry for 3 hours.
Once dry, press sticky tape firmly to the surface and pull off quickly. If the coating comes off, the adhesion test has failed and all of the existing coating will need to be sanded back.
However, if nothing comes off, you're good to continue with the Water Based CFP.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Hi,
We are using Cabots CFP Oil based on bar & servery. Am based in far northern islands of PNG so hot & humid - the product tends to form a skin really quickly which is problematic when applying to large timber slabs,
Can the product be thinned somewhat - if so a general thinner or metho based ? and also - general mix thinner to product.
Note info suggests best applied with applicator or roller - we're using multiple boys on 4" brushes to get the product on quickly.
If roller is deemed the best finish - indication of the preferred roller for the product please.

Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Shaun,

Thanks for your question! You can certainly thin down the Cabot's Oil Based Cabothane with Mineral Turps.
We recommend to start with small amount, however add no more than 10% of the Mineral Turps to the Oil Based Cabothane.

We do not recommend using a roller for application, as this can introduce small bubbles into the coating that may dry on the surface with an uneven finish.
If you do choose to use a roller, a short nap roller will be the best, however care does need to be taken to ensure these bubbles do not form.
For the best application, we recommend using good quality synthetic brushes.

G'day SP Makes,

You're right, the white cloudy appearance is most definitely moisture being in contact with a water based coating before it has a chance to completely cure. You can apply another coat, as long has the coating that is currently on the timber is completely dry.
The cloudiness/milkiness may hang around for a little longer, but will go once the coating has fully cured. This can take 7-14 days, and in some extreme circumstances, longer!
