inconsistent product
I bought 3 cans of the matt finish for my country style house, 1st can produced excellent matt finish, second can was very glossy and so was the 3rd, now I have significant differences in the finish of my expensive floor, I dislike the gloss on my country style floor and I believe that the 2 cans of matt is actually gloss. I an angry what it has done to my floor, I would like to know if Cabot has any process in place for quality control!!!

Thank you for your reply, apologies that I have incorrectly blamed Cabot for my inadequate stirring. I have stirred vigorously and reapplied another coat on top and now I have consistent matte finish.
Very happy now.

14years and still good!
Completed an extension to our home last decade. We had the new floor professionally finished and it looked great. However, between the old and new sections of the house, we had to make a wide hardwood threshold that would cover an uneven height difference between the old and new floors. We used water based CFP as the coating and it looked just as good as the professional job. 14+ years on, the floor finish we paid heaps for, is looking well worn, but the threshold, which is in the highest traffic area of the house, is still looking good. surprised that 3 coats of water based Cabots has retained great gloss after all those years of children and dog traffic. Preparation and Product. You can't beat that combination. Needs a six star rating.1 comment

It's all in the prep work
I went to cabots after trying the intergrain floor product and found it hard to apply. It came up a excellent. The key to this product is prep work. the floor has to be clean and then clean again. Later I found out a friend had used this and it had bubbled within months. They used the wool mop and said they probably didn't clean it as much as they should have. I on the other hand did it all by 100mm professional quality brush. It did take a while to apply but the results are excellent and people always comment. I sanded lightly after the first ...Read more
coat to remove any roughness, and I applied 3 coats. I also used the mix in hardener. I applied on pine floors. There are 2 part floor floor finishes available, but these are much better suited to the hardwoods as if there is any flex ( as there is with pine) it will crack.1 comment

Pros and cons
I contacted the rep before I used it and she was very specific about ensuring that no moisture was present when applied. I followed the instructions and have no cloudy areas but did have to apply 4 coats to get a suitable finish (oil based would have only needed 3 coats).
The reason I went with water based is because I could remain in the house and not move out for a few days. This convenience means that you slightly sacrifice on durability. I have a dog and the small scratches show up only slightly more than the oil based products - but all f...Read more

Limewashed
After 30yrs in cabinetmaking, general building & several years in the display industry, I've used 100's of liters of varnish.
This has given me the worst finish ever - limewash.
All the time and effort removing furniture, sanding & masking . Unfortunately for me it didn't go milky straight away, and I used it on an Art deco cabinet (Tassie oak) & a new American black walnut job - all clouded over & needed to be stripped back.
So much work !

excellent matte finish
Excellent product with the ability to bring out the grain in our vic ash floors and stairs.
A little grain raise on the first coat but a quick sand between coats left a perfect finish.
No smell, quick drying and ease of application and excellent matte finish.
Agree a novice can apply this product with no issues.

Complete disaster
I used cfp water based on my Baltic pine kitchen floor just after ripping out my old kitchen in preparation for the new kitchen. All was ok until my wife two weeks later wiped it down with a damp wiper after the tradeshad finished their work. As she was doing it the surface went white and hasn't cleared up. Now I don't know if I should rip my kitchen out again to sand back my floors again or try a patch up job which will look no better than it does now! So dissapointed after I read the reviews previously and just figured the other reviewers must have done something wrong. Now my kitchen is ruined!

Could you confirm what was used to wipe the floor? If it was just water or a light detergent, simply use a hair dryer to gently apply warm air to the area. Your floor finish might not have been fully cured, and the water coming into contact with it might have caused this whitening effect. This is not unusual and is nothing to worry about. After 5 years still looks great
5 years ago we used the water based CFP in our lounge area and have never regretted it. Still doesn't need another coat even though some slight marks due to normal wear and tear. The low sheen finish is very forgiving as small normal wear marks are very hard to see.
So impressed I have just sanded and sealed another room with the water based CFP.
But please follow the instructions and ensure that all dust is removed from floor before each coat, you will be rewarded with an impressive floor for many years.

Marvellous – Fantastic - Great product.
Cabot’s CFP Water Based Wood Care is Marvellous – Fantastic - Great product. Easy to work with, highly recommended. I did a hallway and three bedrooms with new cypress pine flooring and achieved the look I wanted bringing out the wood structure and low sheen. I applied three thin coats of the product making sure the floor was absolutely clean from dirt and dust after sanding. Adhering to temperature and instructions on the tin. I was First apprehensive buying the product especially after reading some of the unwarranted negative comments. A 9 year old could do the job. If doesn’t work for you, then you didn’t follow the simple instructions.

Not happy - gone milky
Spent a whole weekend sanding my floor and then applied three coats of this stuff. Looked great for three days and then all of a sudden white milky patches started appearing in the joins. Tried your hairdryer trick - nothing. I wish I had read these reviews. Waste of money. Wasted money on tins of this and hiring the sander. Not happy at all.

Worked very well. Cured well.
It went on very easily after preparing the floor as described in the instructions. Very easy to apply. Very low odour. Easy clean up. I am extremely happy with the result. I am not an expert with floor finishes but I have a fair bit of experience with timber finishes for furniture, wood turning and ornamental works. I strongly suggest following the instructions and don't skimp on the cleaning. Have patience.

So far I really like it.
I nearly didn't use it after reading all these negative reviews. Maybe the people giving this finish a negative review need to follow the instructions on the tin.
It hasn't darkened the wood at all which was the main requirement, as it shows off the wood and different colours and patterns in the wood to best effect. Just what I was looking for for our parquet floor.
In the future, If I do find it scratches easily, I'll buy some hardener and give it another coat. but I don't see why it should be any worse than the polyurethane that we used thirty years ago, which was covered in dents and scratches and yellowed with age. The effect this finish gives to the floor is worth the effort of upkeep in my opinion.

Awful results. Waste of time and money.
I took a week of work to strip and coat a mahogany parquet floor. Product is impossible to apply without orange peeling and streaks despite being applied at correct temperature. Very annoyed. Now have to move the family out again to recoat floor. I would not recommend this product to anyone unless I didn't like them much.

Worst Product I've ever used
Impossible to apply without brush/ applicator marks. I called the 1800 011 006 number for help, only advice they had for me was use a wider applicator and brush. So zero help there. Yes, I thinned it, yes I tried applying it in various coat thicknesses and yes I tried applying it early in the cool of the day. No smooth finish, I strongly recommend not using it.

Very happy with results
I used this product on some old pine internal stairs. We wanted to dress them up so stained them with water based liming stain, then gave them several coats of the gloss CFP. This was done over a year ago and has worn very well, and still looks as good as when it was first done. We have also used this product on a raised pine kids bed frame that was painted and it has protected this piece very well too. Will use again.

Far from hard and protective
The results were very disappointing, we followed the instructions to the letter but our floor looked like crap after a few days of general wear. Covered in scratches from day to day living. Would not recommend this product. Wasted $750 and 2 weeks, not to mention the cost of kennelling her dogs while we did the floor.

We did our lounge room we have a small house and it is in the middle of our home we have small kids and 2 Small dogs what is the absolute least amount of time we can move our furniture back and have the dogs inside if it’s more than 3 days is there a faster drying/ curing clear coat we could use we have just put a oil on the wood to stain to a darker colour

Leah P.Cabot's
Hi there,
Thanks for your question. For all of our flooring coatings, it is a 7 day curing process. This is the reason as to why we recommend waiting 7 days before replacing any furniture. As you will run the risk of damaging/indenting the coating if furniture is replaced before this time.
Unfortunately if you have used an Oil based stain, there is no other top coat you can apply that will give you a quicker dry time.
Please give us a call on 1800 011 006 so we can discuss this further with you.
