CAN I CHANGE COLOUR OVER EXISTING OIL BASED CABOLT STAIN?
I've re painted my decking timber using the same oil based Cabots Deck and exterior paint. the first coat has dried with a glossy finish and the second coat won't stick to it? It separates and leaves a streaky finish. I've never had this problem when using the same product on previous occasions. What's going on???
Maybe you have tried to put water based over oil based stain [paint]? I used water based. I would never ever again buy a Cabots product given my experience, water or oil based.
No, it was definitely oil based over oil based. Three tins of the supposedly same colour and they're all different shades. No idea what's going on?

Our deck is about 4 years old. (We only just bought the house). I understand if the current coating is oil based I should use oil again - however how can I be sure. I read about the test with Metho on a rag where if rag turns deck colour its water based - is this right?
Hi Steve. I cannot comment on an oil based Cabots product but I re-iterate the waterbased product is 'not fit for purpose' which is a legal term. Probably the oil based product is substandard but I am...

Read moreYou are correct, the best way to test if a coating is water or oil-based is to use a clean rag with some Methylated Spirits on a clean hidden area of the deck. If the colour lifts it is water-based, if not it is oil-based. Be sure to use Metho and not Turps. Once you know what kind of coating is currently there, you can begin prepping the deck with Cabot’s Deck Clean, as per label instructions. Once the deck is clean and dry you can begin coating with the appropriate stain. Do not mix water and oil as they are not compatible. Want to use an oil based stain on the pale meranti this time. Don’t want too dark a finish so considering 1 -2 coats of oil based deck stain depending on colour then finishing with 1 coat of natural decking oil or some other product. What do you suggest?
Hi Lyndalls 1,

Read more We do not recommend this process as decking oils and stains are not compatible. Once you have removed the previous coating, you will need to wash the deck with Cabot’s Deck Clean to remove any possible contaminants and prepare the timber for coating. You can then coat with 2 coats of either a decking oil, such as Cabot’s Natural Decking Oil, or a stain such as our Deck and Exterior Stain. Do not mix these two products. In order to be sure you are happy with your chosen colour, we recommend testing a sample on an offcut or a small clean hidden area. Please use 2 coats to be sure you are happy with the finished look before committing to the whole expanse. I recently sanded and oiled my treated pine deck. I actually used integrain natural timber oil. The deck does not look good, the timber is super yellow and even though it cured for 10 days before it rained it looks even worse with a coat of rain on it.
I think the only thing I can do is paint it with cabots decking paint. However am I going to have to sand it considering it is freshly oiled? I literally sanded it prior to oiling so I don’t think I have the energy to do it again. Help!
