Darkest possible colour is poo brown
Applied the Deck & Exterior Stain "ebony" colour to a picnic table. Product is very thin & goes on easily. But ebony which is supposed to be the darkest colour in the range (very dark brown-black in the brochure & Bunnings display) appeared poo brown after 1st coat. So I got Bunnings to make a new tin thinking they messed up the first time. No improvement to the colour after 2nd coat. Product was stirred thoroughly. Have had good results from other Cabots products but not this one.

Bought from Bunnings 3 days before I used it. Repainting the timber deck just covering usual wear and tear. After 4 days, still tacky. Can't do second coat. Not happy.

Poor product
Almost transparent stain that requires numerous coats to hide blemishes in the wood. Poor absorption that leaves a rubbery coating on the surface that can be rubbed off easily. I doubt it will last long on my outdoor furniture.

When the humidity is above 50% the coating can have difficulty in being able to dry properly, but normally this should rectify itself when exposed to goo weather. Sudsy consistency when applied
Am presently replacing decking boards with new treated pine boards. Staining boards prior to fixing in order to get a better result, if possible, with New Jarrah. Note that this new can of stain although looks alright in the tin is very sudsy in fhe aint tray and therefore going on the boards in a very bubbly manner. However after two coats it seems to be ok and colour quite normal. Could it be that the mini roller that I am using causes the sudsiness?
Also, after well and truly dried the stain has a very matt finish and gets dirty very quickly. Is it always recommended to top coat with Aquadeck in addition?
Cheers,
Philip.

Hi Phil,
The roller most definitely could be contributing to the foaminess/sudsiness in the coating. ... Read more
We recommend applying the Deck and Exterior Stain with either a good quality brush, or a lambs wool applicator. We also recommend giving the can a good stir and not shaking the can to incorporate the contents. This is to minimise introducing any bubbles into the coating. If you find that there is a lot of bubbles in the coating itself, let the bubbles subside before applying the coating - as this could also be a reason as to why the coating is foaming when applying. The Deck and Exterior Stain will give you a matt finish, we don't recommend applying an oil over the top at this time, as it may not dry properly as an oil does need to penetrate the timber and the coating of the Deck and Exterior Stain that is already on the timber will prevent this. To keep the deck clean and looking fresh in between coats, we recommend cleaning the timber down with our Deck Wash. https://cabots.com.au/product/cabots-deck-wash This product is a non abrasive cleaner - designed to go hand in hand with our timber coatings. We only suggest not to clean the timber if the coating is less than 2 weeks old - this is just so the coating can fully cure first. If you would like to discuss this further, please give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST. Terrible product
So very unhappy with the end result of this product. It definitely is not a stain...we applied two coats and it just looks like our beautiful deck has been painted and every bit of grain has vanished. The paint took days to dry and was sticky underfoot. Our deck covers a large entertainment area and it is now impossible to keep clean....every footmark shows whether you're wearing shoes or barefoot the result is the same....feet marks wherever your feet have been. I wouldn't advise anyone to use this product.

Excellent product
We used Cabots New Jarrah deck and exterior stain on our tired old treated pine deck and hand rails. All I can say is wow, was a bit hesitant to use it when I read some negative reviews, but all I can say is this product is fantastic. It has brought our horrible old deck back to life and looks absolutely amazing. It actually looks like all new Jarrah decking, so warm and vibrant. Can’t recommend this product enough and will be using it again on another deck we have. Really don’t understand the negative reviews as this product has worked beyond our ecxpectations.

Disgusting Paint
Brown paint would look the same as this so called "deck stain". After hours spent attempting to sand this "deck stain" off my deck, a painter I know, suggested I use paint stripper to get it off. I made a complaint to Cabot's and they were unresponsive.

Looks like paint and not a stain, not as shown on colour guide.
Applied Deck & Exterior Stain to a pine floor Beach House Grey tinted to make Hunter Grey. Applied 2 coats assumed the colour would look similar to swatch giving a wood stained appearance.
Applied first coat painted appeared dry was a warm day second coat applied 2.5 h later left over night 8 + hours put furniture on instant black scuffs from a soft item.
This product has a paint appearance and and appears to have not stained the pine as we expected from a stain and it's why we went stain not paint.
Disappointed we will soon have to sand and re do the floors to get the desired effect as this product came on thick and heavy in colour even with a thin coat as per instructions with a deck applicator.

While the coating may look dry, the coating has not fully hardened or cured yet. This can take 7 days for the coating to full cure and harden, which is why we do recommend waiting at least 7 days before replacing any furniture. I just had a treated pine deck installed and went to Bunnings to buy the deck stain. I purchased a 4 Lt Cabot's Deck & Exterior Stain Water Based tinted to classic walnut. I left it to my builder and his offsider to apply it while I was away. I phoned him the next day to ask if more stain was needed, well he wasn't impressed at all with the product, it was nasty to apply by roller so they had to hand brush it. Be mindful _ Cabot's deck & Exterior Paint is unstable when it comes into contact with household bleach.
I believe the product, Deck & Exterior Paint Should come with a message warning consumers that the paint is unstable when it comes into contact with bleach. Whilst cleaning the handrails some bleach came into contact with the Cabot's painted deck. I now have a two-tone deck. I live in North Queensland and I have been cleaning mould from paint for many years and never encountered problems with paint breaking down when in contact with bleach. I am disappointed with the feedback and the general lack of resolution I received upon contacting the help desk.

Stain? More like paint.
Very unhappy with the results. Came up more like a paint rather than a stain. Had a vinyl like effect once dried. The sample colour and effect in Bunnings look nothing like what we got. So disappointed by the product. It has taken a few good weekends to strip and sand it all off. I wouldn't waste your money using this product, because you'll spend twice as much removing it to get back to square one, with how disappointing the results are.

This product is not durable.
Very unhappy with results on our $30,000 pine deck. Waited several weeks before applying Cabots deck clean followed by two coats of our chosen Decking and Exteriors Stain. Finish is like painted timber and durability is non-existent with it marking VERY easily. Even tried putting felt pads on our chair feet. Don't even think about wearing boots on it. Extremely unhappy with the end result. Trying to fix any marks is impossible as any additional coats makes it look more like paint and leaves it looking very patchy and not covering the marks. Our dream home is now an imbarisment.

Hi Dean,
If left exposed to the weather, the Deck and Exterior Stain will eventually weather away.
However, you can scrub the area using warm soapy water with a stiff bristle broom and this should help lift it.

Applied first coat of water based stain to deck 18 hours ago and it is still sticky. Weather conditions are good - no rain. any ideas as to why it is still sticky?
Maree
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Maree,
Thanks for you question. While it is not normal for an exterior timber coating to remain tacky, this can happen.
This can happen for a number of reasons, however generally it will dry itself out within time.
Normally the weather does play a large factor for the coating to dry down and not retain tackiness.
While the coating conditions were good and there was no rain, experiencing high humidity can elongate these dry times due to the moisture content in the air.
Another reason could have been the timber itself still contained moisture - this will also elongate the dry times.
For both of these factors, the coating will dry out and the tackiness will go away when exposed to good weather. Which can generally take 7 days.
However, there are other reasons; for example the timber wasn't quite ready for a new coating and the stain is not able to penetrate the timber. Or, there could have been an existing coating that the new coating could not adhere to well.
If you think that the weather or high humidity has not contributed to the coating remaining tacky, please give us a call on 1800 001 006 so we can ask you a few further questions and try and find a solution for you.
