Darkest possible colour is poo brown

published

Applied the Deck & Exterior Stain "ebony" colour to a picnic table. Product is very thin & goes on easily. But ebony which is supposed to be the darkest colour in the range (very dark brown-black in the brochure & Bunnings display) appeared poo brown after 1st coat. So I got Bunnings to make a new tin thinking they messed up the first time. No improvement to the colour after 2nd coat. Product was stirred thoroughly. Have had good results from other Cabots products but not this one.

Bought from Bunnings 3 days before I used it. Repainting the timber deck just covering usual wear and tear. After 4 days, still tacky. Can't do second coat. Not happy.

Poor product

published

Almost transparent stain that requires numerous coats to hide blemishes in the wood. Poor absorption that leaves a rubbery coating on the surface that can be rubbed off easily. I doubt it will last long on my outdoor furniture.

Sudsy consistency when applied

published

Am presently replacing decking boards with new treated pine boards. Staining boards prior to fixing in order to get a better result, if possible, with New Jarrah. Note that this new can of stain although looks alright in the tin is very sudsy in fhe aint tray and therefore going on the boards in a very bubbly manner. However after two coats it seems to be ok and colour quite normal. Could it be that the mini roller that I am using causes the sudsiness?
Also, after well and truly dried the stain has a very matt finish and gets dirty very quickly. Is it always recommended to top coat with Aquadeck in addition?

Cheers,
Philip.

Terrible product

published

So very unhappy with the end result of this product. It definitely is not a stain...we applied two coats and it just looks like our beautiful deck has been painted and every bit of grain has vanished. The paint took days to dry and was sticky underfoot. Our deck covers a large entertainment area and it is now impossible to keep clean....every footmark shows whether you're wearing shoes or barefoot the result is the same....feet marks wherever your feet have been. I wouldn't advise anyone to use this product.

Excellent product

published

We used Cabots New Jarrah deck and exterior stain on our tired old treated pine deck and hand rails. All I can say is wow, was a bit hesitant to use it when I read some negative reviews, but all I can say is this product is fantastic. It has brought our horrible old deck back to life and looks absolutely amazing. It actually looks like all new Jarrah decking, so warm and vibrant. Can’t recommend this product enough and will be using it again on another deck we have. Really don’t understand the negative reviews as this product has worked beyond our ecxpectations.

Disgusting Paint

published

Brown paint would look the same as this so called "deck stain". After hours spent attempting to sand this "deck stain" off my deck, a painter I know, suggested I use paint stripper to get it off. I made a complaint to Cabot's and they were unresponsive.

Looks like cheap paint, not stain!!!

published

I selected a nice dark brown coloured stain from the sample at Bunnings, and it turned out looking like orange paint instead. It completely hides the grain of the timber. I called the helpline and was told that I must not have mixed it properly. I mixed it very thoroughly, and had another go on a scrap piece of timber.... and no difference. Its an awful product and has destroyed the look of our deck. We are now sanding it all off and starting again with Feast Watson stain. Im never touching Cabots products again!

Looks like paint and not a stain, not as shown on colour guide.

published

Applied Deck & Exterior Stain to a pine floor Beach House Grey tinted to make Hunter Grey. Applied 2 coats assumed the colour would look similar to swatch giving a wood stained appearance.

Applied first coat painted appeared dry was a warm day second coat applied 2.5 h later left over night 8 + hours put furniture on instant black scuffs from a soft item.

This product has a paint appearance and and appears to have not stained the pine as we expected from a stain and it's why we went stain not paint.

Disappointed we will soon have to sand and re do the floors to get the desired effect as this product came on thick and heavy in colour even with a thin coat as per instructions with a deck applicator.

Be mindful _ Cabot's deck & Exterior Paint is unstable when it comes into contact with household bleach.

published

I believe the product, Deck & Exterior Paint Should come with a message warning consumers that the paint is unstable when it comes into contact with bleach. Whilst cleaning the handrails some bleach came into contact with the Cabot's painted deck. I now have a two-tone deck. I live in North Queensland and I have been cleaning mould from paint for many years and never encountered problems with paint breaking down when in contact with bleach. I am disappointed with the feedback and the general lack of resolution I received upon contacting the help desk.

Deck & Exterior Stain Water Based

Which Cabot’s paving paint is suitable for painting compressed concrete decking

1 answer

Leah P.Cabot's

Hi John,

Unfortunately we do not have a recommended coating system for compressed concrete decking.
I suggest to reach out to the manufacturer of the product and see their recommended coating system.

If you would like to discuss this further, or need any advice on an up-coming project, give our Help & Advice team a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Deck & Exterior Stain Oil Based

Hi I have a deck that’s been painted with a oil base it takes to long to dry . It needs painted again so is it ok to use a water base this time as it won’t take as long to dry.

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Vee,

You certainly can move on to use a water based coating if you wish. Just follow the preparation steps below;

Clean with Cabot's Deck Clean following label instructions, then allow timber to fully dry.
Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. It the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot's Deck Clean - or allow the timber to be weather for a little longer.
If water is absorbed into timber, it is ready for coating. For a more transparent look, sand timber back to bare then clean with Cabot's Deck Clean before coating.

If you have any other questions, give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Deck & Exterior Stain

Hi, I have used Cabots deck stain water based for my weathered timber deck. 2 coats applied under good weather conditions. Would like to know how soon can I walk on it and how long would it generally have a tackiness. Thanks

1 answer
Cabot's
Leah P.Cabot's

Hi Vis,

Thanks for your question.
The Water based Deck and Exterior Stain can be walked on a minimum of 8 hours after the final coat.
However, taking the cooler weather into consideration - you may want to add a few extra hours on to this as our quoted dry times are based on temperatures of 25 degrees with 50% humidity.

The decking can retain some tackiness, and this can be common when the weather is particularly cooler or water - when moisture gets trapped in between the coating, this is when the coating can retain some tackiness.
Generally though, after about 7 days when the coating is fully cured, the moisture will evaporate and the tackiness should go away.
If you are finding that the coating is still tacky after 7 days or if you have any other questions, please give us a call on 1800 011 006 so we can discuss this further with you.
Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Cheers - Team Cabot's.
