Stain? More like paint.
Very unhappy with the results. Came up more like a paint rather than a stain. Had a vinyl like effect once dried. The sample colour and effect in Bunnings look nothing like what we got. So disappointed by the product. It has taken a few good weekends to strip and sand it all off. I wouldn't waste your money using this product, because you'll spend twice as much removing it to get back to square one, with how disappointing the results are.

We ask for Dulux but Bunnings sold us Cabot’s as they didn’t have the one we wanted
Similar problems, they Bunnings sold us Cabot’s deck paint asked for dulux but they said there was a special Cabot’s which would give the same finish and colour on our new treated pine deck the Cabot paint turned out which we will have to darken somehow so we are disappointed both in Cabot’s and Bunnings

This product is not durable.
Very unhappy with results on our $30,000 pine deck. Waited several weeks before applying Cabots deck clean followed by two coats of our chosen Decking and Exteriors Stain. Finish is like painted timber and durability is non-existent with it marking VERY easily. Even tried putting felt pads on our chair feet. Don't even think about wearing boots on it. Extremely unhappy with the end result. Trying to fix any marks is impossible as any additional coats makes it look more like paint and leaves it looking very patchy and not covering the marks. Our dream home is now an imbarisment.

All great by me!
Used this product on fence about 6 monthly, for 6 years slightly watered down as didn't want heavy cover. All good....very happy with it & takes 1/2 hour just to freshen up...
Just bought aqua deck water based oil due to salesperson at mitre 10 but it is going straight back....changing to deck & exterior stain again...

Staining treated pine deck.
I too bought the water based Deck and Exterior Stain from Bunnings. Had the people mix the product to the Ironwood colour, got home applied it to the deck with the applicator and MY GOD it looks like mission brown. No wood grain visible it is a horrible mess. 10 litre tin cost over $230.00.

Beach House Grey? Ha!
Beach House Grey?
Nope! First tin was Beach House Clear cause there was zero pigment in it! Back to bunnings for another tin.
Second tin is a success as far as actually being a colour.. but that colour is actually blue...not grey.
It should honestly be called Beach House Blue.
It's patchy, it's shiney and it looks absolutely nothing like the colour I asked for in the shop.
If you put more than two coats on say goodbye to your grain. It's basically paint. ...Read more

Awful
For the last five years I have annually cleaned and applied merbau stain to my hardwood decks. I've used a number of different brands and found them to have a consistent darkish colour. This year I bought cabots and was horrified to see what looks like an orange paint finish. I went and bought another brand for the second coat to try and cover it up but it has barely made a difference. Can't believe how terrible it is. Not sure what to do now but thinking i will prob have to sand it off.

Oops made good...
Wanting a 'beachy' look, I chose Beach House Grey with Waterman tint to paint the front fence posts. Really liked the colour, though it had a bit more brown than I expected. Pleased with the result, I took a photo of the label & went to get another tin for the back deck. The girl at Bunnings paint dept noticed that the brown base had been used instead of the BH Grey, which explained the strong brown on the posts. So this time, I had the correct combination & I was shocked by the strong navy blue, but was expecting it to go on almost transpa...Read more
rent & look like weathered timber, like the in-store samples, which is what I was after. Wrong, it looked like thick blue paint, totally trashed the hardwood deck. Due to the cost of this product, I took the tin back to Bunnings & explained that I had wanted a weathered stain look, not a blue paint finish. The staff member looked up the difference between the original 'oops-brown' mix & the correct combination & altered the remainder of the tin back to the 'oops' colour. I sanded back the deck till most of the blue was gone & sparingly applied the 'adapted' stain by brush instead of the sheepskin mop. I found it works better to apply multiple light layers with a brush, than one heavy layer with the mop, to prevent the heavy plastic look. The final effect was great. Been on the deck next to a salt water pool for over 6 months, gets the occasional pressure clean & still looks good. So if your looking for a mid-strength brown with a slight grey/bluish hue, maybe consider testing a sample of the Brown base with Waterman tint. Tones in great with blacks & greys, while still giving a nice natural look.1 comment

Didn't turn out as expected
We were staining a pine sleeper retaining wall. After trying a sample pot in one colour and leaving it for a year while the timber settled in we didn't like the result. So today we went instead with Ironwood tint at Bunnings. The colour of this stain didn't turn out anything like the colour chart. It's more like mission brown paint than a stain. We used it immediately after it was mixed at Bunnings and also stirred it like the guy at bunnings said. Such a waste of money to purchase expensive samples that you don't like and then 4li tin for $90 that's no good.

Looks like plastic, waxy, dirty paint
We followed all the instructions on the website and given to us by Bunnings. We needed a lot more product than we were told we would. Our new pine deck now looks like a plastic painted surface. We have been told it was our fault for not preparing the timber correctly but we followed and the instructions and spent a lot of money on Cabots products. It might as well be painted with house paint.

Looks like paint not a stain
Just finished applying Cabots Exterior Stain to my recently constructed raised garden bed H4 treated pine retaining walls. Didn't read any product reviews prior and went with Cabots as had just used Aquadeck on the new deck which came up really good. I purchased 'Merbau' stain but a more appropriate title should be "Poo Brown Paint". Yes I stirred it thoroughly each and every time I used it, I followed the instructions to a tee, I was absolutely meticulous in the prep and the application. Left the sleepers two weeks to breathe and mature after ...Read more
construction prior to commencing application. First coat was okay, looked like stain and I was tempted to leave it as is, but put on the second coat as per standard practice and to ensure it lasted longer - it immediately looked like thick brown paint with no timber grain or features showing through - devastated. Even more so in reading these reviews which consistently say the same thing. Will it change and revert to a stained look after a bit of weathering? I hope so but unfortunately I'm not holding my breath... Really wish I'd taken my work colleague's tip and used Intergrain instead of Cabots, despite the extra cost, obviously you get what you pay for!1 comment

Too much orange
Used the interior Walnut stain. First coat came out quite orange, nothing like sample in Bunnings. Second coat toned down the orange, but still evident. More reddish than normal walnut. Wasn't game to try a third coat - think it might end up too dark for what we want?
When I compared stain colour in the can with the little bit left in an old can (both Walnut), you can see more orange in the newer stain. Think part of problem might be that instead of stain being used (hard to source now), colour is added to stain. Sad that so much preparation and effort is wasted because of this. If there is anything I can do to correct prior to clear coating, would love to hear.

Do not use this product!
We have just painted our brand new pine shed with two coats of Golden Pine Waterbased stain. The first coat didn't look very even so we had to paint it twice but instead of a beautiful golden honey color we now have a bright orange shed that looks nothing like the Cabot's swatch sample we looked at in the store. Do NOT believe what they say on the can.
I have used 12 liters so far on a 36 square meter deck and still need to do one more coat as the color is all over the place. It on new pine deck with the ridges up. And yes I do know how to paint and have not slopped it on. Wish I could post a photo the you would see what I mean. Just hope that the color comes right after another $85 per can and I hope that the 4 liters will cover 36m this time. I wish I had read these reviews before my choice.

In a nutshell. This product looks nothing like the Cabots sample swatch you see in store. It looks like PAINT once you apply it. ting times, and applied in perfect temperature conditions. So far it sounds like Im the perfect customer. Bought all my Cabots branded products ready to tackle my newly build deck. A proud DIY moment. Lets read on shall we. Lets apply our first coat. Hmmmm, not looking too bad at all, I was worried I wouldn’t get across my whole deck before the stain ran out, so I made sure I was getting the most out of stain. Spreading it well. A definite improvement on the bare treated pine look ive been staring at for 8 weeks. Let it dry completely, and then returned the next day to apply the second (and recommended) coat. I start applying the second coat. All seems to be going well, im on my second tin now, so again, making sure I get a nice even coat and spreading it out well. I get about half way across the deck and I look back to the area I started in, its beginning to dry and well, its looking very paint like I think to myself. I tell myself to stop worrying and continue finishing the deck. There, all done. I stand back from inside the house and look at my newly stained deck. It was at this point that my concerns were starting to turn to panic. As this second coat was drying, I literally watched as my deck transformed, losing all signs of the timber grain underneath. It no longer looked stain like, it looked like PAINT. To be correct, caramel poo paint. What an earth has gone wrong im thinking.3 comments

Wish I read reviews prior to purchase
Wish I read these reviews prior to purchase and use. My painter went against his normal product as I wanting the ebony stain finish so I went ahead and purchased it, guess what colour it is... mission brown! There is a definite pattern forming here with this product. It gives a watered down blotchy paint finish not at all a stain finish. Any suggestions on the easiest and cheapest method of removing this ugly "stain" would be greatly appreciated. Cutting my losses and considering it a painful lesson learnt :-(

misleading advice on merbau stain.
The advice on the can stated that 1 litre would cover 10 square m of deck. So 8 litres would do our 80m deck.
Not so. It took 36 litres and $650 worth and 4 trips to the hardware store for more deck stain. Way too much and way more than i wanted to spend. More than four times more. It was easy enough to apply but required constant mixing and stirring even during application and did not leave an even colour on the deck due to its uneven absorption rate and inability to mix well. Even with constant stirring there were still blobs of stain ...Read more

Stain running down my limestone wall in rain!!!!
We stained our back deck and bench seat a few weeks ago and had two sections run down the limestone wall after sprinklers. Today it has rained a lot and I have a very streaky limestone wall now. Shame I can't upload a photo to this review! We have been preparing it for a party this Saturday and now it looks worse than ever !!!!

What type of timber is your deck made of? Is it Merbau, Jarrah or a similarly dark timber species? It sounds like your timber is leaching tannins onto your lime stone walls. It is impossible for Deck & Exterior Stain to be running down walls once it is dried - water simply cannot re-liquefy it post curing. The good news is, tannin is water soluble, so you should be able to remove it using a soft bristle brush and some water. We wouldn’t recommend using any acid based solution on your lime stone. Could you let us know how you go? Is there any other issue with your Deck and Exterior Stain apart from the timber’s tannin bleeding? Please call us on 1800 011 006 if you have any further questions or feedback. Cabot’sSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Hi John,
Unfortunately we do not have a recommended coating system for compressed concrete decking.
I suggest to reach out to the manufacturer of the product and see their recommended coating system.

Hi I have a deck that’s been painted with a oil base it takes to long to dry . It needs painted again so is it ok to use a water base this time as it won’t take as long to dry.
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Vee,
You certainly can move on to use a water based coating if you wish. Just follow the preparation steps below;
Clean with Cabot's Deck Clean following label instructions, then allow timber to fully dry.
Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. It the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot's Deck Clean - or allow the timber to be weather for a little longer.
If water is absorbed into timber, it is ready for coating. For a more transparent look, sand timber back to bare then clean with Cabot's Deck Clean before coating.
If you have any other questions, give us a call on 1800 011 006. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.

Hi, I have used Cabots deck stain water based for my weathered timber deck. 2 coats applied under good weather conditions. Would like to know how soon can I walk on it and how long would it generally have a tackiness. Thanks
1 answer
Leah P.Cabot's
Hi Vis,
Thanks for your question.
The Water based Deck and Exterior Stain can be walked on a minimum of 8 hours after the final coat.
However, taking the cooler weather into consideration - you may want to add a few extra hours on to this as our quoted dry times are based on temperatures of 25 degrees with 50% humidity.
The decking can retain some tackiness, and this can be common when the weather is particularly cooler or water - when moisture gets trapped in between the coating, this is when the coating can retain some tackiness.
Generally though, after about 7 days when the coating is fully cured, the moisture will evaporate and the tackiness should go away.
If you are finding that the coating is still tacky after 7 days or if you have any other questions, please give us a call on 1800 011 006 so we can discuss this further with you.
Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.
Cheers - Team Cabot's.
