Dearest is not always the best
I purchased 2 x 10 ltr cans of Cabots water based exterior decking stain, it was the dearest one on the shelf but I had heard of its' reputation and was eager to give it a go expecting it to be a walk up start to a high quality finish to our very large deck. After following all of the directions on the side of the can I started applying the finish to the deck with no troubles. At the same time I purchased an applicator from Bunnings that had a tank on it to hold a reserve of stain with a trigger and it performed very well and made the applicati...Read more
on very easy. Each time that I refilled the tank I again mixed the stain before refilling it. After 1 1/2 hours I had a 10 minute break for some lunch, after mixing the stain in the can again I resumed staining again only this time the stain came out a completely different colour looking nothing like what I had applied before lunch, it looked like the old "Mission Brown" that everybody used to use years ago and I now will have to wait for it to dry and hire a floor sander to remove this section that was stained. For such an expensive product one would expect the colour pigments to be consistent throughout the entire application especially when it was mixed each time I refilled the applicator. Very disappointed! Not consistent with its' colour during application

Hi John,
Unfortunately we do not have a recommended coating system for compressed concrete decking.
I suggest to reach out to the manufacturer of the product and see their recommended coating system.

Hi I have a deck that’s been painted with a oil base it takes to long to dry . It needs painted again so is it ok to use a water base this time as it won’t take as long to dry.

Hi Vee,
You certainly can move on to use a water based coating if you wish. Just follow the preparation steps below;
Clean with Cabot's Deck Clean following label instructions, then allow timber to fully dry.
Test if the surface is ready for coating by sprinkling water on the timber. It the water beads on the surface, repeat the application of Cabot's Deck Clean - or allow the timber to be weather for a little longer.
If water is absorbed into timber, it is ready for coating. For a more transparent look, sand timber back to bare then clean with Cabot's Deck Clean before coating.

Hi, I have used Cabots deck stain water based for my weathered timber deck. 2 coats applied under good weather conditions. Would like to know how soon can I walk on it and how long would it generally have a tackiness. Thanks

Hi Vis,
Thanks for your question.
The Water based Deck and Exterior Stain can be walked on a minimum of 8 hours after the final coat.
However, taking the cooler weather into consideration - you may want to add a few extra hours on to this as our quoted dry times are based on temperatures of 25 degrees with 50% humidity.
The decking can retain some tackiness, and this can be common when the weather is particularly cooler or water - when moisture gets trapped in between the coating, this is when the coating can retain some tackiness.
Generally though, after about 7 days when the coating is fully cured, the moisture will evaporate and the tackiness should go away.
If you are finding that the coating is still tacky after 7 days or if you have any other questions, please give us a call on 1800 011 006 so we can discuss this further with you.
Our operating hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 7:00pm, Saturday 8:30am to 3:00pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm AEST.
Cheers - Team Cabot's.
