I dont think it will be any cheaper at Coles Express or at Seven Eleven. It seems to me the majors run a cartel and practice Retail Price Maintenance. I drove along Gardeners road this week where the 3 majors (Caltex Woolworths, Coles Express and Seven Eleven) had E10 at over $1.60, the Metro had 40 cents per litre cheaper.

The answer is simple. We have a petrol duopoly with Woolworths and Coles owning and controlling over 90% of petrol outlets. The exception are the independent operators. In areas close to them we see some discounting . Another problem causing high fuel prices has been the removal of Federal Government legislation requiring the establishment of a national wholesale petrol price, which was fixed for one month at a time. That meant that every Service Station paid the same price for their petrol supply and kept the fuel price down. When the Government removed this legislation it was supposed to create competition. That works fine providing two companies dob't own most of the petrol servos.
The Government needs to reintroduce a maximum wholesale petrol price for all fuel. Remember jus recently when people who used diesel complained about ir costing more, The fuel industry sais was because it cost more to produce diesel used in Australia compared to unlead3d petrol. Today my servo has unleaded at 149.7 and diesel at 131.9 cpl.. Something rotten in the State of Denmark" You bet it is. Normally premium unleaded is 11 cents per litre more than 91 RON. And premium 98 is another 4 cents higher than premium 95. Processing costs don't vary so how is it that these margins are often widened when petrol prices are spiking..

Why doesn.t the Government intervene. Well they get lots of revenue from taxes applied to fuel and those same fuel companies(and the supermarket duopoly),have lots of spare cash for lobbying and donating to political parties. And pollies will not cut off the hand that feeds them. It used to be said that the fuel discount dockets were subsidised by higher grocery prices. Now it seems that fuel prices are helping to subsidise grocery products. Either way the consumer pays the price and never wins. And the so called discount fuel prices require you to shop at one of their company owned stores, All this does is stifle competition..
The only way we will see this situation resolved is to have enough people to complain to their local federal member about fuel prices and demand that the maximum wholesale monthly price be reinstated and the duopoly be forced to give their customers a fair go. In the interim period buy your petrol from and independent where possible. With the gap between duopoly servos and the Costco servo across town normally being 20 to 30 Cpl less, I am now considering driving over there every weekend to fill up. .I get a nice drive and I still save after that drive's.fuel cost. Do the maths 100 km return trip to Costco at 10litres per 100 km at $1.20 per litre equals $12.00. Fill tank at Costco 60litres @$1.20 per litre equals %72.00. Combined cost to fill tank is !2.00 plus 72.00 equals $84.00. Now if I filled up at the local servo the cost would be 60 litres at $1,50 per litre equals $93.00. So by driving to Costco once per week for my petrol, I have had a nice drive and have saved myself $9.00. That is $468.00 per year, And, I get my groceries anywhere I want. Maybe its time to shop at ALDI when it opens and in the meantime I can use IGA.
And is a lot of us do it, we as consumers get back some measure of control and the duopoly will have to face the fact that their fuel prices may be costing them business. more people we tell about the facts, the more pressure we can exert on our politicians, the fuel suppliers and the duopoly. If we do nothing, then there will never be any change. And our apathy and compliance is what those who benefit from our hard earned dollars rely on.
