Underpowered 8220. Not as advertised

published

The box even depicts the 8220 max. You see the max on the battery. Online this particular Dremel doesn’t exist. Even the Dremel official site doesn’t display it as a product unless you exactly search for Dremel 8220 au. Then it appears but with mixed info. Mine feels badly under power and nothing I can find out about it

Did the job

published

Needed something to remove grout from around tiles in shower recess in ensuite. This did the trick but required 3 grout removal drill bits to do so - they snap... The cost of the bit and guide was 1/2 the price of just the bit alone - which was weird. Not happy about having to buy the extra two... So operator error? Grout too hard? I'm not a handy person and watched quite a few you tube videos on how to... At times the dremel skipped out of the grout area and scratched the tiles. The battery life seemed quite good however I have nothing to compare it to. Cordless was a good way to go so I wasn't tripping over the cord. Now use it for trimmimg my dogs nails. Having more success with this!

The Dremel 8220 sold in Australia has a smaller AH battery than overseas models. The following is part of my correspondence with Dremel from January 2018. In part compensation I received the larger battery. Obviously running the flex shaft takes energy to overcome the extra friction, which will depend on the amount of flex and the tool being used.

"I relied on your Australian and US websites when deciding which Dremel tool to purchase. Right now, your Australian website can be set to show a comparison between the 8220 and 8200. Elsewhere there is a claim that the 8220 runs 33% longer that the 8200. Your website carries the slogan “Dremel big on detail” so here are some details from the website: Battery capacity 2.0-Ah versus 1.5-Ah; Battery voltage 12-V versus 10.8-V; Charging time 1.5 hour versus 1 hour.

I do not know if there are changes to the motors between 8220 and 8200. Clearly the 8220 has a light. I would expect changes in the charger to support the higher voltage battery. I do not understand what “the maximum capacity this battery can accommodate is 12V (peak)” actually means. All batteries deliver a maximum voltage which decreases as the battery is discharged. All batteries require a charging voltage higher than the voltage they deliver. Capacity normally refers to the energy a battery can deliver, expressed as watt-hours, and varies with the discharge rate.

Interestingly the 33% claim would seem to relate just to the battery amp-hours. Add in the voltage difference and the stored energy in the battery should be about 48% higher. The photos below clearly show the battery I received matches the 8200 – it is 10.8 volts and 1.5-Ah according to its casing, not 2.0-Ah as claimed.

So it would seem that in Australia you are delivering inferior 8200 specifications under 8220 froth. I would call that deceptive and misleading conduct. The fact that your brand manager is in the process of updating the Australian website lends credence to my claim, but presumably your international websites will not be changed."
