After 6 years, still spending money to fix issues
When my Rinnai water heater finally stopped working after about 18 years, I got a Dux Prodigy 5 installed in 2014 for $1500. It started failing the next day with the pilot light keep on going out. The licensed installers couldn't figure it out so Dux sent their own but in the end, they replaced the new unit with another new unit. It worked until 13 April 2020 when the main hot water tank burst.
I called my local installer (Blacktown City Hotwater) and they sent out a tech the next day. The tank was under warranty but the labour charge was $520...Read more
! I called the Dux customer service and they said since failure of the main hot water tank is not categorised as a 'Major Failure', it will be out of my pocket. How can that be fair? $500 is a very big amount for me, specially in the current economic crisis. The best part is, the pilot light has gone off again and cannot be re-lit. Now waiting for a tech to come and fix it....again. I should have gone with Rinnai. Dux need to stop selling cheap products and take care of their customers. ----------------------- Update 15/04/2020 There was no hot water in the morning. The pilot light was off (#1). Installer sent an engineer and he checked and said can't find the fault. Re-lit the flame. ----------------------- Update 16/04/2020 There was no hot water in the morning. The pilot light was off again (#2). Called the installer again.Purchased in February 2021 for $1,500.00.

Join the DUX club for flame outs, funny noises and pilot light problems.
Purchased from bunnings in 2012 and over much of the time installed made many noises whilst heating up the water (close to bedroom on outside, no sleeping till water has heated up) Now looking at the other reviews, definitely a design or component problem with these units. Peered inside unit, problems with pilot light, controller faulty and melted insulation with black soot. Not worth the risk with these units. Previous Rheem unit lasted 18 years till it leaked.
Purchased in August 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for $1,149.00.

Having problems with my Prodigy 5
I bought my Prodigy 5 in June 2015 and yesterday it stopped working after 4 years and 5 months.
I opened up the front cover and some of the foam insulation has melted and shows signs of fire damage. I phoned a gas plumber and he knew straight away what the fault before even coming around as he has seen it before. Apparently it is all to do with the flue damper and sensor which are failing causing the burner stay on resulting in the system overheating. He showed me photos of other Dux Prodigy 5 hot water systems from customers that had the sa...Read more

Constant problems past 2 years
I purchased the Dux prodigy 5 in 2014. The past 2 years I’ve had constant flame outs with the pilot not staying on. Now it has burned the insulation outside.

Flue damper issue?
At the 3 year mark the pilot light kept going out and we couldn’t relight so replaced the thermocouple. After a month the pilot light get going out, plumber said it is a known issue with this model. Interesting to read so many bad reviews on line with the same problem!

More like a cold water system.
Be bought this house 2 years ago and in the last 12 months the pilot lights has gone out so many times I’ve lost count! Once again today no hot water. So I re-lit the pilot at lunchtime and it’s gone out again now. And now it’s my problem that Dux manufacture products that just don’t work.

Poor quality product and service.
My three year old Dux Prodigy 5 star hot water tank pilot light keeps going out. Also the foam around the lower part of tank has been burnt.
I called Dux and was told not to worry about it as it's still safe' snd just restart the pilot light. I had trouble getting it restarted so called a plumber. The plumber said there had been a fire and the foam around the tank has been burnt. He was able to eventually restart it. He mentioned that a valve can malfunction which can cause this issue.
I called Dux again and no real assistance.

Broke after 3 years!
My DUX Prodigy 5 Gas Hot Water System broke after 3 years of service. I previously had a Rheem which lasted me 10 years. It only broke because of a tank issue so I expected the DUX to last me until the tank warranty, this was not the case unfortunately.
The gas keeps cutting off after less than a minute of turning it on, I think the problem is the thermostat because I keep hearing a clicking sound whenever the flame cuts off. I contacted a plumber that will be looking at it tomorrow, am dreading the cost as these things can cost a lot. REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PURCHASE.

that is half the cost of a new DUX Gas Heater supplied and installed! I have seen a lot of posts about this and it looks like this part not working is a common issue. The danger that it poses is that when the flue does not open, the flames spiral out of control and has burnt the foam insulation inside. To me this should be a warranty issue. Again, REALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PURCHASE.Dux H.Dux

Died after 5 Years - Pilot light won't turn on, sign of burn on the internal styrofoam insulator aro
The HWS (Dux Prodigy 5 135L) installed when the house was built in 2013. In the last one month the pilot light went out many-many times, almost everyday. On Monday this week, I found the HWS had shutdown again, I ignited the pilot light and it start the burner, however the burner (and the pilot light) shutdown after 2-3 minutes, while the water still cold.
Had it checked with a plumber the next day, he was able to lit the pilot light and the HWS on the first try and it did seems to work normally from afternoon until night. He mentioned the g...Read more
as control valve or thermocouple maybe on the way out. The cost to replace the gas control valve and thermocouple are $550, but let's wait and see. On Wednesday morning I found the HWS has shutdown (again!). But this time I can no longer turn on the pilot light, the igniter button does not seems to work as usual and does not lit any light (button didn't gave normal big click that will start the pilot light. Instead, it felt almost loose with only little click when I pressed it). This time I noticed some part of the internal Styrofoam insulator inside the HWS had been burnt around the burner tray. I no longer feel safe with this HWS and currently looking to replace it with new brand. The HWS only last 5 years, far from my expectation.2 comments

My $1250 Dux now DIES after 3 year of usage life!
My Dux 135D5N unit installed Dec 2015 and now it's got same problem as other reviews: Dux is rubbish.
Pilot continually went out, need to ignite very a few days, my local plumber replaced controller, however, the problem persists, Issue of pilot going out, and flames shooting up through face of unit and shut down itself.
My Dux now it DIES. The warranty is worth nothing as far as I'm concerned. It's a piece of junk if it only lasts 2 years. Most people expect their hot water system to last for 10 years at least.

Dangerous Product
I purchased this through bunnings on May 2014. Two days back it failed to work. The cost to replace the pilot valve is $400. I noticed the rigifoam packing surrounded the cylinder were melted. When I called them they said it's out of warranty. This is a manufacturing fault. not a wear and tear. They said they can provide the packing but we need to pay for the plumber to get it fixed. I decided to install a new aquamax heater.

Dangerous product.
Do not buy! Dangerous product. We purchased this product less than 3 years ago. Last week due to an internal fault with one of the parts, it caught fire. The pilot light would not stay lit, and our plumber has told us we were risking electrocution by attempting to relight it. When contacted Dux refused to offer any assistance.

Absolute scam
Brought a Dux 135L hot water service in 2014. Pilot light started going out a few months ago and not relighting. Had a plumber in. Could maybe fix it for $650-$750 but advised if we wanted reliability we should purchase a new unit. Contacted Dux to see if there was anything we could do about getting some compensation and they didn't want to know about it - absolute worst customer service - we are now out $1500 for the new unit. Don't know how they keep getting away with it. Do not buy this product!!!

Do not buy a Dux Prodigy water heater...
This heater is good, when it works. Too unreliable. After 4 callouts in 4 years I gave up and bought another brand. The plumber I called for the last breakdown said they were over complicated, unreliable rubbish and to get rid of it. So I did. I am quite annoyed to have to buy a new heater after only 4 years but I think it is a case of good riddance.

Dux should be renamed DUD!
The biggest waste of money i have spent. Bought a Dux Prodigy 5 from Bunnings in April 2017 and regret that decision, we had the usual problem of the burner going out constantly and then the unit would sound like it exploded every time the burners ignited. I contacted Dux who sent a rep out who offered to replace the unit but would charge $650 to install, how generous. I had always had a Rheem gas h/w system before and only bought the Dux froms Bunnings in desperation as after 15 years the original system decided to retire itself on a Saturday ...Read more

Why dux continues to sell this product when it is obviously a customers nightmare, is beyond me! Bad
Never purchase this product at all! dux is a name that I cannot put any trust in! Replaced previous gas hot water service with a dux firstly in 2013. Constant problems with pilot going out daily, then the tank rusted out! Was replaced under warranty, 26/10/2016 by dux after great negotiations, and having to pay $385 installation costs as of course this company "dux" doesn't include that under their warranty?. Now this prodigy 5 gas hot water service has started playing up, pilot light going out constantly again! How can this company get...Read more

So Dissapointed
We bought Prodigy 5 135D5N in September 2016 and the pilot light just won't stay on. It goes out every 2-3 days and I have to restart it manually. After spending almost $2000 and being charged for the installation twice I'm so angry. Called service people they promised to call me back but never did .. I mean its still under warranty I don't understand why they won't help me

I wouldn't recommend buying a Dux HWS
I had a Dux HWS installed in 2012 which has recently stopped heating the water on a number of occasions. After paying over $100 for if to be fixed three times and the plumber not being able to pinpoint the fault, I think it's time to cut my losses and invest in a new HWS, I will not be choosing a Dux this time. The service department were of no help, pointing out that the warranty only lasts for 1 year.

To many cold showers.
After only two years we started having issues with the pilot light going out. In its third year the pilot light was refusing to stay on and we spent over $300 on a weekend call out. The plumber replaces the pilot thermostat but told me if it keeps happening it may be the flu damper at the top of the unit. He said they are too expensive to bother with so just jam it open. a month later and another cold shower. So now I've jammed open the patented energy saving flu damper. Just hoping that fixes it.

Update: Pilot light still burning since jamming the patented energy saving flu damper open three months ago.

Bought my Dux prodigy 5 135 liter hot water system in May 2015. Now I find there is steam coming out from the top. Called a service technician, he changed the anode, and hot and cold water pressure taps. There was also water dripping from inside the unit. The dripping stopped for a while and there was no more steam until 24 hrs later I hear dripping and the pilot light keeps going out. Well the problem is the flue damper is stuffed and does not open. the flame for heating was as flat as a pancake, when I manually opened the flue the flame rounded the way it is supposed to be, the dripping was moisture build up because the flue would not open when the heater was heating. I am not happy for 3 years and its proving to be a problem. what make this worse is i lost my job in dec 2017 and I'm still unemployed and i wont be able to buy another heater. Dux water heater. How do i get rid of the steam?

Hi Tom,
Is there hot water coming from the PTR valve?
Hi Tom,
PTR valve, up top, to drain, should only release water from excessive temp or pressure. If no release then probably faulty or low adjusted thermostat. Turn off power to HWS at switchboard. Remove 2 screws on lower cover. Thermostat is upper, element below. Look at adjustable temperature setting on thermostat, turn up if necessary. If already above minimum and water is colder than setting (allow +/- 5-10*) most likely faulty. Possibly faulty heating element but they usually work or not at all if open circuit. if it heats up at all then its probably OK. Replacement thermostats are only around $25 on ebay, then get sparky to install. Just clip mounts on surface and no need to drain tank.
Good luck.
Sorry Tom if your HWS is gas.
No idea about Dux model numbers and presumed it was electric.
