Big Regret.
This will be a bit of a story, but bear with me, because it is 100% true. Or otherwise scroll to the bottom for a really quick quantitative summary of my thoughts.
So roughly 20 years ago, my parents bought a gigantic yellow Electrolux vacuum cleaner - one of those with the disposable paper bag filtration systems. I don't really remember much because I was very young, but every spring clean since I can remember, I would vacuum all two stories of the house (we have a rich, cream carpet) while my sister would mop the floors. This invincible behe...Read more
moth of a vacuum cleaner lasted us until somewhere around 2016-2017 when we ran out of the paper bags (we kept buying refills, but by this time we figured it was time to get a new machine. The Electrolux actually still worked). We heard all about this fancy new brand, and everybody seemed to love it, so we figured we'd give it a try. Assuming it'd last another 15-20 years, we forked out somewhere around $800 - an investment - for a Dyson DC54. I remember we were so excited to try out the new machine, due in no small amount to its unique and intriguing design. At first it was ok, maybe a little less power than we were expecting, but now, in a few years' time, it hardly even picks up visible lint/bits and pieces and dust from the carpet. I also kept hearing a sound around where the removable cartridge connects with the body of the machine like escaping wind, and the cleaner barely even left those triangular streaky patterns on the carpet that the old vacuum would leave. After cleaning 8 rooms + staircase, the cartridge isn't even half-full. At the time, I also found myself missing the old disposable bags, because the removable cartridge was difficult and finicky to open and clean, and I'd have to go at it with a brush. So yesterday, we went out and bought a new Electrolux Pure C9 Animal, and less than a week after going through the house with the Dyson, I had to pause empty the cartridge 4 times because there was so much dust the Dyson wasn't picking up. There is so much to say. The cartridge empties instantly - it's easier to remove from the body, and it's also a simple shape so opening the bottom instantly empties all the dust into the bin, where the Dyson actually needed me to bang a few times and have a brush handy (guess cartridges are good after all; it was just poor design from Dyson). The electrical cord is much longer so I can actually do the stairs in one go, the cleaner is so much more powerful - the cartridge fills up with dust amazingly quickly, the handheld part is easier to extend and collapse, and the best part - we paid half the price that I did for the Dyson.
Purchased at Bing Lee Physical store for $800.00.

Suction and brush head
H I have a Dyson 54 and it just doesn’t have good suction
The brush head doesn’t spin anymore and we have cleaned it and nothing is blocking the hose
Do I need to look at the whole head replacement or just a brush
Purchased at Harvey Norman for $999.00.

We are sorry to hear you are having trouble with your machine.
Understanding you have checked the machine, we would recommend viewing this video to ensure all areas have been checked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU.... Read more
In addition to this, we recommend to remove the brushbar and check the cleanerhead for any blockages. To do this, remove the brushbar using a ten or twenty cent coin to twist the cap at the end of the cleanerhead that retains the brushbar counterclockwise (as shown here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpXtMpytFJc). Once done, you will be able to remove both the cap and the brushbar. Please then check the cavity where the brushbar was in the cleanerhead and clear out any debris. You should be able to look through the neck of the head and see straight through. Please then reassemble and retry the turbine. This should help get your machine back up and running, however if not or if we can assist further, our Dyson Experts are available via [email protected] and happy to help.Similar opinion? Paid big bucks and broken after 5 years
My wife brought a dc54 for $ 800 thinking these were the top vacuum cleaner. After 5 years.the turbine head stopped spinning . i cleaned the vacuum and then strip the turbine head and it has stripped the gear under the inner belt. Now it will cost $135 to buy a new head.Unfortunatly we have 2 dysons and i wonder how long the other one will last.Very pricy vacuum cleaner but very poor quality.

Disappointed
My Dyson doesn’t have a problem tipping over but it has very little suction and doesn’t seem to pick up everything off the floor. My $50 aldi vacuum cleaner did a better job. Purchasing my Dyson was a very big regret as it was not cheap and I expected it to work much better. There is no way I will ever purchase another Dyson

If you are finding the machine has lost suction, this may indicate a blockage somewhere throughout the machine. We'd first recommend that you run through the checks outlined on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU. Worst purchase ever
This vacuum is not worth the money it cost. If I paid $300 instead of $800 I would say it is worth it maybe. The suction is terrible, it sucks light stuff off the floor but a piece of thick cotton or similar you have to go over it 3 or 4 times before it sucks it up. I bought a $79 vacuum from Kmart and it does a better job than the $800 dyson.
I will never buy another Dyson product.

Glad it's discontinued. Definitely a RIP off!
I am now using my original dyson from 2001 that was much easier to empty. I am hesitant to update with another newer model. I was initially impressed by extra suction, however emptying the machine after each room vacuumed was exhausting. Inhaling clouds of dust every time definitely put me off doing this chore.

This can clean and suck!!!
The suction on this model is pretty amazing. Ive seen other vacuums clean but this one you can tell everything has been thoroughly cleaned!!! Didnt expect anything less from a Dyson.
My only irk with this model that didn't reach it's 5 star potential is clearing the filter when its full. It looks easy but the silver button doesn't come out as easily esp when hair and stuff are tangled on it whilst you're inhaling all the dust.

Best vacuum cleaner I’ve ever owned.
Easy to maneuver and to get under things like the fridge without having to bend too much. Fairly quiet. I’ve been using this vacuum cleaner for about 3.5 years and it still works perfectly. So strong and works well every time. Doesn’t take yo too much space in the cupboard.

Overpriced
We purchased this vacuum after having issues with cheaper vacuums. We thought if we bought a premium vacuum, that we would get a quality product. We were very disappointed. This vacuum feels very cheap and has trouble cleaning our floors. We had better results from vacuum cleaners at a fraction of the price

Best Vaccum Cleaner
It's a very strong and powerful vaccum cleaner I've ever have. It picked up all the long hair from my dog completely from carpet. It's very clear how much dirt in there so you don't need to open it or guess. The price is way so much expensive, but with such result, I think it's really worth it. The power cord is also quite long that I don't need to keep changing the power plug position.

lack of engineering thoughts
While makers of dyson claim they engineered their product, they obvously didnt consider using it in the actual field - at home.
Every vacuum cleaner can suck dirt but completing the job like emptying?
I believe dyson engineers were left in the dust in this area. The advertisement they show emptying the barrel is far from reality. That shows their common sense.
Save some money and do yourself a favor, test a lot of vacuum cleaners before purchasing. Do not base decision on hype.
There's more promising maker and model than dyson.

We recommend to empty the barrel when the debris reaches the Max line to ensure the easiest emptying experience. Should any debris get stuck, and to avoid using chopsticks, the bin can be separated from the cyclone as demonstrated here: https://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-animalpro/maintaining-your-dyson-machine/cleaning-the-shroud If we can be of any further assistance, please email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to help. Worst vacuum ever
Bought a Dyson after having a Nilfisk for 10+ years. Got all the positive sell about how durable it was etc. Turned out to be absolute rubbish - the motor recently burnt out after just over 2 years. Sent away for repairs to be told that motor burn out was our fault and repair would be $290. Customer service took so long to let us know what was actually wrong with machine that we just gave up and bought something else. Dyson finally informed us that motor burn out was due to a 'blocked cyclone' - despite machine advertised as needing "no filter ...Read more
maintenance". Apparently you are supposed to pull the cyclone apart in your spare time and check these things. Dyson then sent machine back to us before we had a chance to speak to anyone in person.... Was always a pain to empty - dust blew all over you and suction was only average. Looks good but wouldn't go near any of their products again. For a $700 + machine to last such a short amount of time is pathetic. Save your money and by something else - we just got a Miele and it is great.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Very poor design
The suction of this unit it great going over carpet to tiles. I don't like how cheap it feel with all the plastic it's easy to manoeuvre, coming to emptying the unit is a challenge Dyson didn't design the dust bin very well. I believe the never model is designed much better.

Rolls like a dream
I used this vacuum for a single storey four-bedroom house with wooden floor boards and carpet and it cleaned up nicely. It came with all the attachments that I needed for the different surfaces as well as a few other accessories for small crevaces and corners.
Never ran out of suction power and was easy to clean since it's a Dyson without a bag system.

Light and easy to maneuver
I've owned the DC54 Animal for about a year now. It is so light and easy to move around the house, and picks up everything with ease. I have a mixture of tiles and carpet, so I made sure I had a hard floor tool and also the motorised head, both which work very well. Only draw back is the bin. It only takes a very small amount of dirt before you have to empty it, and seems to collect in one side of the bin only, therefore necessity of emptying it even more often. Otherwise, it does the job beautifully.

Power decline 6 months out of warranty
2 and a half years ago...bought a dyson DC54. 2 year warranty.
6 months after warranty expires, turbo head hardly works and power is minimal to what it was.
Seems they reel people in with an 'awesome vacuum' from a company that spends more money on advertising than ensuring their products actually last.
23 minute wait so far to be answered on dyson customer service line

doesn't do the job it was designed for
I am so disappointed with the Dyson 54. Two main areas of concern. The pickup head flicks clumps of fur and dirt out of the back of the head all over the floor. I have cleaned the roller and the space behind the roller that constantly gets clogged up [I have one domestic shorthair cat]. This has to be done several times per room. [wool carpet]. The remainder of the floors are stone. If the head finds anything lumpy [oat flakes, sultanas] it flicks them out of the back of the head. When emptying the canister, the fur gets stuck up near the mesh ...Read more
filter and needs to be coaxed out with a pencil, stick etc. The small plastic hinge on the canister lid is also a concern. Looks fragile, not good design. The volume of the canister is also very small and I empty it every time it gets to the red line. Often. The canister is light and easy to use, the machine is manoeuvrable. I just wish it would clean properly.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

It's rubbish. I regret for purchasing it. Waste of money and never buy a Dyson againl
I purchased Dyson DC54 as it advertised asthma friendly for $898.00 at Good Guys. As I thought it is better to spend extra and buy a good vacuum. I decided to buy Dyson DC 54. However, it's rubbish and waste of money. It's better to buy a cheap one which perform better than Dyson DC54. It's hard to ampty the dust. I contacted the Dyson customer service within 1 month when I had some issues with the vacuum. Dyson's service is worse than Dyson DC54 animal. I feel like their advertising was customer misleading as they advertised it as better for asthma and dust allergies. Now it's stop suction now. Even I don't want to fix it. Better buying a cheap one.

Our Dyson DC54 Serial number FJ7AUGAA0658A is making a high pitched noise. Suction seems to be fine and the turbo head works fine. I have brushed out and cleaned all the areas I can get to. Any advice would be much appreciated.

What heads can I purchase for this machine? Are any that are still in store able to fit it? Also, do dc29 heads fit in it?
2 answers
Don't know about the heads from the DC29 but got a complete variety of heads when we purchased ours. Got the usual crevice tools both solid snd brush ends, a furniture head with a small rotating brush inside the head, a couple of different heads for the floor. About 8 items in total.
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Shay,
Thank you for your query.
The DC54 and DC29 use the same fitting to connect, so any floor tools from the DC29 will fit and work on the DC54. That being said, the stow used to store the floor tool on the machine is different, and won't be able to store heads for other machines on the DC54.
There are three floor tools designed for the DC54, The Turbine Head, Hard Floor Tool and Musclehead. Should you wish to know more about these or place an order, please email [email protected] and our Dyson Experts will be in touch and happy to help.
Best wishes,
Shan

Hi there,
My DC54 turbine head has finally given up after a variety of bits breaking, falling off, jamming etc, with various repairs over the years.
Does the Turbine Head on your website work with this vacuum as a replacement?
