Just replaced the brush bar for our DC54, it arrived today, BUT when we put it back together, the brush wont turn. It appears the black spindle doesn't want to turn (which probably explains why our previous brush bar wore out). Is there any way we can access the black spindle so we can clean it and get it spinning again.
1 answer
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out.
I am sorry to hear the spindle of your turbine head isn't spinning. If this isn't spinning, we would recommend considering replacing the turbine head.
I encourage you to reach out to our Dyson Experts via [email protected] and our team will be more than happy to assist further.

I have a DC54 Animal which has developed a foul musky smell when it is operating.( Smells like an animal has crawled inside and died!) We have cleaned the machine as much as we can as per the user handbook, but the stink is still there. I believe the machine can be further dismantled to replace other filters?
1 answer
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Barry,
We are sorry to hear a smell is coming from your Dyson machine. Understanding you have cleaned the machine, we would recommend to confirm you have done the below:
After emptying you may rinse the clear bin in cold water as per the instructions in your user guide, ensuring that no detergents are used. Please don't remove the bin inner or cone seals whilst washing the clear bin and most importantly ensure that the clear bin is completely dry before placing back onto the machine. Please note that the cyclone top assembly, which attaches on top of the bin, must be removed and is not washable.
We also recommend to let the hose, floor tool and wand of your machine air out for 24-48 hours, ideally somewhere safe, dry and sunny.
If the machine still has an odour, please reach out to our Dyson Experts via [email protected] and we will be more than happy to assist further.

My Dyson dc54 is incredibly noisy and makes a high otched whining sound. Is this normal? I sure hope not because it’s driving me crazy!

Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi there,
I am sorry to hear your DC54 is making a whining sound, while it will sound different to other machines due to the high speeds of air through the cyclone, a high pitch is not to be expected.
Please give us a call on 1800 239 766 or email [email protected] and we will be happy to help. Our Dyson Experts are available Monday - Friday 8 am - 8 pm and Saturday - Sunday 8:30 am - 4 pm EDST.

My Dyson DC54 doesn't seem to get the dirt out of the carpet. Didn't realise how bad it was until I borrowed my daughters Hoover with power head. Very disappointed with it. Anyone know what I can do to improve it?
4 answers
I was disappointed with mine as well. Apart from keeping it clean I haven't found any improvements on a (in my opinion) well marketed non proforming vacuum
i uncerstand you can buy a power head for around $100 (not certain) and that does a better job... but who would want to throw some more money down this drain?
I guess we might ask for an instore promo before we buy...

Hi There,
Sorry to hear that you are experiencing a lower level of pick up than expected with your DC54.
A common cause of lowered pick up is that there is a blockage of airflow through the machine.
Check the openings on the floor tool for blockages and use a long thin tool such as a skewer or knitting needle to clear the channels.
Please check the machine for blockages as shown here, please pay close attention to the section 50 seconds in, this part can be tested by dropping a 20 cent coin through the lower duct hose starting near the oval opening on the main body, behind the bin, if the coin does not come out, tip the machine over to get your coin out then proceed with the instructions in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU
If this does not resolve the issue please reach out at [email protected] and we will be happy to help you further.

Sorry for getting back a bit late but I’d say take it to dyson as it’s very unusual for it to just stop. And are you sure u didn’t smell anything odd before it stopped ? Check with dyson and good luck with it all i hope this will help you thanks.

My Dyson DC54 still has suction but the rotating brush no longer rotates. I've checked for blockages and that's not the issue. Is this just a problem with the head - which I can replace - or something more sinister.
1 answer
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Delwyn,
Thanks for your question.
This issue can be caused by a blockage of airflow which reduces the suction.
Please check the turbine head for blockages as shown here: http://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-animal/my-machine-is-not-working/turbine-head-not-working-properly

Hello the decorative red rubber that goes around the cyclone is falling apart and bits of the rubber have broken off leaving gaps. The Hoover still works fine and I have noticed that other people's machines have the same issue. Is the red rubber just there to make the Hoover look nice or does it serve a purpose? And why does it degrade?
Thank you.
1 answer
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your question.
If this particular rubber strip peels off the outside of the cyclone, it should have no expected negative impact on the performance of the machine.
Please reach out at [email protected], and we will be happy to help you further.

Hi we have a DC54. Our helper accidentally hosed down the cyclone unit and the clear bin with water. I'm afraid this has ruined it completely. I have never used water on it and it has worked perfectly for years. I've dried it out and will keep it in the sun for a few days.
Will this affect it's performance? Hmehat are the faults i have to look out for thanks
2 answers
As long as the motor was not hosed down it will be fine. In fact the only way I can clean the filter properly is by hosing it down. Just emptying out the unit into the trash, leaves behind heaps of smaller particles and that is why I believe this vacuum has a design fault, because the selling feature was that you never have to clean the filter. You would get a shock to see how much comes out when you hose it down - and I also hose down that other plastic cyclone section. Just make sure it’s completely dry before using. I much prefer a filter that is accessible and that is one of a few reasons why I do not like this machine
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Ash,
Thank you for your query.
if the cyclone has been washed, we would encourage you to consider replacing it as if it doesn't completely dry; it can encourage mould growth and allow water to cause damage to the motor.
I would encourage you to give us a call on 1800 239 766 to discuss further. Our Dyson Experts are available Monday - Friday 8 am - 8 pm and Saturday - Sunday 8:30 am - 4 pm EST.

HI I have a DC54 and it has lost suction. There are no blockages and it has been thoroughly cleaned. The black strip on the turbo head is warn down to nothing and I was wondering if I replaced the head if this would fix the problem?

Hi there,
Thanks for your question.
Replacing a worn brushbar which is available on our website here: http://shop.dyson.com.au/spare-parts/brushbar-963549-01 will assist with the pick up, but will not assist with reduced suction from the machine.
Please check the machine over as demonstrated here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PheQ00a_urU particularly the short flattened hose under the bin.
If this does not resolve the issue please reach out at [email protected] or call the helpline on 1800 239 766. We are open 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 8.30am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, Eastern Standard Time, and we will be happy to help you further.

I live in a very dusty part of NSW and wonder how best to clean the built up fine dust which sits up the top of the cyclone area? It is adhered to the walls of the top cyclone bin. I have blown it out with the air compressor already. It is a DC 54 but I'm not sure what variant. Thank you.
4 answers
It seems to be electrostatic attraction for microfine dust. Does not seem to cause a long term issue ( my Dyson is now 3 years old) but is annoying to see. I wash mine out occasionally with a hose and let the cyclone dry in the sun for a few hours.
Thank you.
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Dusty,
Thanks for your question.
Please start by cleaning the cyclone shroud as shown here: https://www.dyson.com.au/support/dc54/dc54-allergy/maintaining-your-dyson-machine/cleaning-the-bin-and-cyclone
Tapping the top of the cyclone or blowing it out with an air compressor will help to expel the excess dust. Having some residual household dust trapped in the cyclone should not negatively impact the machine. However, please note that should the trapped dust in the cyclone be fine dust from plaster, rubble, ash or renovation work this can damage the machine.
Please reach out at [email protected] if you need further assistance and we will be happy to help you with your machine.

Hi, I have recently bought an animal DC54. It was amazing at the start, super powerful. Within a month the power is terrible. I've cleaned it and checked for blockages without finding anything. There does seem to be a noise that happens about 10 seconds after switching on, then power reduces. Any advice is appreciated as beginning to get frustrated. I can still use it even though it seems to get warm quickly. Very disappointed.

We have a Dyson DC54 (purple top) and the rotary powerhead has started blowing instead of sucking! We have detected a small pop as soon as we turn the appliance on coming from the main machine. The other flat head works fine. We have cleaned the powerhead thoroughly. Any advice? Many thanks.
1 answer
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Kevin,
I am sorry to hear you are having trouble with your DC54.
If the turbine head is blowing dust around, there is most likely a blockage within the turbine head itself.
We recommend removing the brushbar using a ten or twenty cent coin to twist the cap at the end of the cleaner head that retains the brushbar counterclockwise. Once done, you will be able to remove both the cap and the brushbar. Please then check the cavity where the brushbar was in the cleaner head and clean out any debris. You should be able to look through the neck of the head and see straight through. Please then reassemble and retry the turbine.
If we can assist further, please email [email protected] with your details, and we will be in touch to assist.

The canister on my Dyson Cinetic Animal Pro will not slide back up after emptying?
I seem to have done it by accident on other occasions, but this time it's just not happening. Any ideas?

Hi Suzy,
Thanks for your question.
It sounds as if you may have a Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro rather than a DC54 Animal Pro.
If you have a Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro please see this video for troubleshooting this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvBf-3IQtg4
If you have a DC54 Animal Pro, please email us to clarify which part is not sliding up and we will assist you.

Hi. Is there an adaptor so we can use DC08 (purple & green) tools on a DC54 Animal Red? The DC08 tools worked much better (better pick up from the start and less clogging with hairs & dust etc) and we also have a car kit so want to use them all if possible.

have accidentally dropped the shroud etc into the bin when emptying, came apart, how do i get the plastic bits together without breaking them?
1 answer

Hi Tam,
I am sorry to hear this. The bin should easily click back onto the shroud, just locate the two locating bumps at the front of the cyclone with the notches on the bin. The back of the bin will then click into place.

I have washed the barrel of my Dyson with water, then released I shouldn't have done that. Once its dry will be ok and what is the best way of removing all the water?
1 answer
Dyson Team ..Dyson
Hi Donna,
Thanks for getting in touch.
If you only washed the clear barrel area, wiping it over with a soft dry cloth and allowing it 24 hours or so to dry will be fine.
If the cyclone was washed, which may be red, silver, purple or yellow, this part will not be able to function correctly again, and will need to be replaced.
The parts can be purchased online from this page: http://shop.dyson.com.au/spare-parts?range=10650
If this does not resolve the issue or if you would like to speak with us first, please call the Dyson Helpline on 1800 239 766, we are open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 4pm on weekends AEST
