I have an Elna 40. How do I change the cotton reel from Horizontal to Vertical. It seems to just lift up but gets tight at 45% and I don't want to force it as it might break.

It does not lift up you just use your disk that you slide on after your cotton it helps to keep the cotton unraveling smoothly. Rae

I love my Elna 40 but but the button hole can be temperamental, what I do after each button hole I flick back 2 or 3 numbers then go back to the button hole you would like works every time. Hope this helps.

My machine is sewing very slowly, what could be causing this? It is the same with the winding of the bobbin. I am only sewing straight lines nothing fancy. Very frustrating

This might be obvious, but there's a slide speed switch on the front of the machine. I was wondering why mine was going so slowly and discovered I had knocked this slide all the way to the left (slow). Move it to the far right and it should go quicker.

My Elina 40 is about 2 and a half years old. It no longer will sew a buttonhole. I worked fine when I tried it then when I actually sewed the buttonhole the needle stayed in one place and did not sew the buttonhole
Suggestions on fixing this please.

Buttonholes are an automatic function and require the foot pedal to be disconnected. I got caught out once and thought the machine was broken, then I remembered the foot pedal, removed it, pressed the button and it worked. Hope this helps.

Hi
I don't know. maybe look up the Elna website for this information. I bought it purely for button holes and zig zag.

I've been using my usual thread and a bobbin of thread on the bobbin threading spool. Just remember that you need to thread each thread to unwind in opposite directions.

Hi Guys if you brought the machine from new you will have a spare spool attachment in you accessories bag and your instructions show you how. Let me know if you need a copy email to you.

some more thoughts.
Depends which thread you're using, the type of fabric, and is the needle the correct size for the fabric? EG, you need a smaller needle for thinner fabric, size 11 or so for fine fabric. Size 16 for denim.
The one thing I did find is that good results were only possible with good thread. It always went better on Guttermanns. Naturally. My worst experience, when the machine basically wouldn't work properly at all, was using the mega cheap three pack of Spotlight thread. Good luck. Let me know how you go.

My machine just stopped, was sewing one minute went to iron material went back to sew and it just won’t work, any one had this problem?

yes, happened all the time to me. Took it back to Spotlight (Elna aren't interested in dealing directly), they tested it and found no faults. Naturally it never happened with them although they promised they ran it for a long time. Good luck.

What dials do I use for a gathering thread?

1 answer
Terrigalteas
Terrigalteas

As far as I know there is no dial for this. In the past, using another machine, I've used a special gathering attachment, but don't know if there is on for the Elina 40. I just used a long stitch length, sewed two rows and pulled the threads to gather. The old fashioned way.
