If anyone has one, does the bobbin case move very much. My lifts quite a bit. And also moves when I see and makes a loud clicking noise.

Do you mean the actual bobbin? Yes sometimes mine jumps a little bit but it hasn't caused any problems. I think it seems worse when the bobbin is less full,

If I remember rightly there is a small metal latch/lever on the right hand side just inside the bobbin case hatch. lifts up & down.
I found it for a friend about a month ago.

If not feel along the bottom back of the free arm for a slider.

Her machine was definitely an Elina, but I think it had a pull out bobbin case, not the drop in version I just saw on youtube.

please let me know if this helps.

If you remove the extension table (where your accessories are kept) there is a lever behind there if you slide it to the right it will lower the feed dogs and then to replace them just slide the lever back to the left :)
My directions are for if you're sitting in front of the sewing machine, mine is an Elna Elina 40 if that helps

I think the standard elna accessories don't fit the elina 40. I have the same problem with my machine and a piping foot I bought. I am going to try and see if I can get a new piece at the bottom where the feet connect to that is the standard size.

Annabelle35
Annabelle35

Yes! But you need to get the right foot, this depends on whether your machine has a top or front loading bobbin.

I would like to make a large buttonhole using my Elna 40 however the manual seems to indicate max size that can be done is 2.5cm - is there some way to make this larger? I need it to be a bit larger than this - ideally 3-4cm to easily fit straps through for a pram liner I am making. Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't have this machine, but I've done a lot of sewing. I should think you could do it the old-fashioned way if there isn't a standard one that's big enough. Mark a bar with two ends on your fabric. Make the stitch width very wide but short for the end-tack (sew a few times across and back) then go narrow (half-width) down the left side, very wide at the other end, then half-width to go up the right hand side. Finish with a few straight stitches down left side of buttonhole.

Do I need to oil my machine?

2 answers
Annie
Annie

I have never done this.

If it runs poorly and you use it lots you can have it serviced and they will oil it.. Most people would do this after several years of use. I wouldn't oil it unless you know what you're doing. You should clean any fluff out of it though to keep it running well, this would be more important. K

What causes a machine to skip stitches? It sews perfectly for a few inches then will skip a few or a lot of stitches. Then it starts working again.

Might be the tightening setting. You may want to refer this to the manfacturer. Mine never have this problem.

check that you have a sharp needle..so many problems are caused by using the wrong needle for the wrong fabric.. make sure the needle is sharp if in doubt replace it you can also check the tension .. set machine on zig zag and sew a line of about 20cm ..stitches should be the same tension back and front if not set tension until they are

What is the trick to attach the needle threader please? Mine will not attach and the bulky design of the machine makes it almost impossible to thread manually. Very frustrating!!

1 answer
Kim
Kim

Sorry can't help. Mine came attached.
But if you mean how to use it, it just pulls down, the thread goes to the left under the small hook like thing and then to the right under the 2 small things and I front of the needle, let the threader go back up and the cotton will thread through the needle. I do find sometimes the cotton gets stuck in the tiny hook that threads the needle but I just use a pin to
lift it off

The machine can be fitted with any universal needle and any needles recommended for elna and janome machines. The needle selection depends on the type and weight of fabric you are using plus the job you are doing. So a twin stretch needle if doing a doubke hem around a short sleeve hem on a T Shirt for example.

I am having trouble doing the buttonholes, I only get across the end and part way down the left side sewn then machine stops and will not continue. Have to turn machine off, and it does the same thing when I try again. Is this a fault with my machine?

I haven't tried a button hole yet but do remember the sales person saying that it was a sensor and would stop if anything came in he sensor range. Maybe you are moving within the sensor range without realising.

Thanks, I have watched a video on Youtube on doing buttonholes, and there is a lever that I did not have down so will have another try tomorrow. Last time I did a buttonhole was many years ago on a basic machine.

1.the presser foot (I'm not sure how to call that bar or foot ?) Too tight or I should say too low, when I lift it up, can't fit in two pics of jean. The distance too close .
2. Because of the presser foot too tight I can't sew thick fabrics. Feed dogs not running can't feeding the fabric.
Can anyone help me how can I get it loose abit .thanks a lot .

I've seen double faux fur together and double quilting fabric. There is a lever that lifts the presser foot up higher sort of behind the presser foot on the right, you lift it up and the foot lifts higher

Try using stitch 6 or a narrow zigzag. Or perhaps try a twin needle - I haven't tried this on my elina 40 yet so not sure if it works. also try using a walking foot when stretch sewing

Hi This machine has an automatic threader. It is a bit tricky to get used to but great once you are. The front part I am assuming you mean the tray. It slides to the left and holds ur accessories. Hope this answers ur questions

I don't use the automatic threader because I can't be bothered "getting used to it". As for the 'front part', look in your manual ' cos I only know as much as you do :-)

Turns out as Sharon says, this is an automatic threader. I've been threading it by hand all this time!

Yes. I used a twin needle for stretch as well as on cotton fabric. Worked well, just needed an extra spool holder for the additional thread.

giraffe

It works fine for me by threading an extra bobbin to use as a second cotton reel, and putting this second bobbin on the bobbin spool, the winding it around the knob used when you thread the bobbin, after which thread to needle same as the cotton reel thread on the main spool. Jennifer

Not sure what you mean. The store where you purchased your machine from can show you, or if you have not yet purchased a machine a reputable store will allow you to try it out. I found it very easy to set up by following the instructions. Good luck

I have't had this problem at all. Are you completing the final few stitches and hearing the machine beep? There is a good online demonstration here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzXcNfL38G4

Thanks a lot yes I am doing everything by the book. I will have a look at the U Tube video and see If that tells me anything

I had this problem, until I realised it has to beep 3 times and the needle reinforces at the end. You have to wait till it stops and stops beeping then its finished. Just wait a bit longer on each button hole

I am going to buy one today. How does the warranty work ?Is it straight swap or sending it away for fixing. Are
the parts readily available in Australia?

1 answer
Margiem1
Margiem1

I would check with the store. The warranty is 2 years for electrical and 5 for mechanical under normal domestic use. Usual exclusions for power surges etc. The warranty says return to Elna office or authorised retailer - and warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear (whatever that really means)
I am very happy with the machine runs like a dream, is quiet and has done everything I have asked from it - I have sewn hessian, denim and silk.... pretty good test!
I really like the option to use the press button or the pedal - this is great for fiddly bits.
