quality unit
I bought this fridge as a replacement for my old waeco cdf-11 which gave up the ghost after about 3 years with a failed power supply. I have to say that although this is quite an expensive fridge, the quality is obvious compared to the waeco. Things like the lid hinges, the finish of the plastic exterior, even the power cord are all well made and have a quality feel to them but the thing that really impresses me about this fridge is the design of the dual lid system. driving but it also has a full width/length lid that is secured by a latch and, when opened, gives easy access for larger items like lunch containers or a bag of meat from the shops. The performance of the unit so far has been faultless with quick cool down from ambient and the compressor gives a deep, solid reassuring hum (although not at all loud). The only thing that prevents me from giving it 5 stars is, 1- price ( almost 700 bucks is a bit too much for a 14 litre fridge) and 2- the rotary temp. control dial down near the bottom of the unit needs more friction to it (or click steps) to stop accidental movement from an errant boot or tool in the back seat of the ute. Small, very small
This little fellow will keep your dozen cans cool, but long necks? Forget it. Way too small for large bottles. Also, mine never has an "off cycle". It runs constantly. I don't know if thats a fault with mine, or how their supposed to operate. My Evakool 47litre uses less power, but is too big for the boat, hence my purchase of the little Engel. I should have got a slightly bigger, more conventional shaped one, though. Would make a good little freezer; with the emphasis on little!
Small externally, and relatively light
Small interior, almost impractical as a fridge. Runs constantly.

Have owned the E version and the F version of this little unit. Solid and reliable! Have left it operating in a hot car for weeks at a time while im away at work, with my solar setup. Hasnt missed a beat.
Only gripes are the cooling fan runs %100 of the time, can be annoying when trying to sleep with it constantly spinning. Also dont let the heavy top lid fall backwards when opening the fridge, as this will loosen/bend the hinges. Engel should of included a lid strap to prevent this happening. Other then that its a great fridge.

Is this unit good as a freezer

Not really. It will freeze the items if it’s turned up, but it has such a small capacity, I wouldn’t bother.
It’s ideal for cans or stubbies, small food items etc, but not large things.
I would suggest a chest style fridge/freezer that has the compressor at one end, and a divider for cold one side, and freezing the other.
Also, as much as I like my little 14 litre Engel, the motor runs continuously, with the motor working harder when the “load” kicks in. It’s tough and reliable, but I wouldn’t want it in the van with me all night.

Can anyone help me out? I am chasing a transit cover to suite my Engel SS40F I have contacted Engle them selfs but they have been very quick to say we don’t make them any more and we’re not willing to put me in contact with the company that manafactuers there bags .

I presume that you have searched eBay? I’m sure that somewhere in the world one would exist. Failing that, plenty of people are handy with industrial sewing machines, and could fashion one using your fridge as the template (leaving the air vents, and controls free, of course).
I had a complex zippered tailored bag made for a small outboard motor once. Cost me $130 and fit like a glove. A rectangular one would have been half that price.
Thanks Sarge that will be my final option but as you said surly there is one out there I have tried eBay and web search even emailed Engle for help but they weren’t very helpful at all

How many 375mm cans does this hold?

From memory David, as I've not used it for a while now, she holds about 18 cans; if you lay them sideways. About 14 standing upright. Not many, compared to my much larger Frigmate, but I cant carry the bigger one around on one shoulder either.
It's a portable fridge, for short term applications. Not suitable for feeding a large family, or supplying piss to a footy team. Horses for courses mate.
This Engel runs constantly. There's no "off cycle" with the motor. Sometimes the motor is working harder than others though. I thought it was a fault with it, but the Engel people set me straight on this. Very small power consumption, and very cold, very quickly. I've fitted a digital thermometer to her, as I don't want to freeze my beer. Cheers.

on. I trialled it over the weekend, it carries 14 cans upright, or 18 if you don't mind laying them down. It's power draw is tiny, and I am very happy with its speed at chilling down warm replacements. Worth more than my initial 3 out of 5. Probably a solid four.
