Great Manual Coffee Machine
This machine has been around for over two decades for a good reason, it is built like a tank! Commercial quality engineering and components in a domestic coffee machine. It is an even better machine if you go to the expense of upgrading the frothing wand. Makes a quality Crema delivered at the ideal temperature.

RIP old girl
We upgraded to this model after our previous one didn't produce good enough coffee for my father-in-law. I cannot fault the quality of the coffee it makes, and since I always have espresso, I hardly noticed if the milk wand worked or not.
We, too, replaced the plastic handle, having banged through a whole lot of coffee shots and cracked it.
We serviced our machine annually at the store we bought it from, which was not the cheapest thing but since we used to own an Italian car, we knew that Italian technology isn't exactly fire and forge...Read more
t, so we were happy to do this. However, within a month after servicing it, the machine ceased functioning again, so it lies on our countertop, dead and cold. All up, we spent about $600 servicing this and replacing various parts over 5 years, plus a $700 purchase price, so I am not exactly rushing out to add another $100 service onto it a month after doing the last one. A shame, really; our previous Breville did a decade's service without fault but the Gaggia required the aforementioned TLC.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

We bought two of these
After my first Gaggia Classic died due to poor maintenance on my part (never descaled it) I made the silly mistake of buying a Nespresso. Yes, this was handy with the pods and all but the coffee was expensive and lets be real, pod coffee actually tastes awful compare to a freshly ground bean coffee. The Gaggia really makes a great coffee. I now descale this every 6 months and it works like a charm. The pressure that this thing produces is enough to make a fantastically thick and creamy crema. It steams the milk with ease and it is easy to ...Read more
keep clean. It has no automatic features so it is simple, straight forward and robust. No computers, touch screens or buttons. It only has simple on/off switches. I recommend this machine. You'll need to practice a little first, after all, this is a real entry level espresso machine.

Almost perfect
Like the other reviews this coffee machine is built like a battleship and uses good quality components thar are readily available should you break something.
It makes great coffee but for me the auto steam wand doesnt give me good milk texture so I replaced it with a Rancillio Silvio wand bought on ebay for $33 and now its perfect.
I also bought a spring loaded tamp and that makes the results predictably good, again worth the investment.
I was lucky to get it at $99 off the retail because it was Coffe Italia's birthday so happy about that. Hopefully this machine will last me for many years like the other owners say.

Classic in everyway - Quality machine
I've been using the Gaggia Classic's for a few years now and they outlive any pod machine or the all singing and dancing electronic machines. The classic is basically a manual machine in everyway. You need a burr coffee grinder to grind fresh beans for the best coffee with a decent crema. The crema is real unlike some other machines that have crema discs to make fake crema. Whilst I initially struggled with the machine it was down to user error rather than the machine itself. ie getting good coffee beans and finding the optimal grind. Thi...Read more
s is my 2nd machine, I've tried PODs and semi manuals like brevilles which whilst work do eventually break down and are unrepairable. Gaggia specialise in coffee machines so are very well made and parts are always readily available. Gaggia Classic is a Tank!
I've had my Gaggia Classic for 11 years, it has high quality materials and is built to last.
You need a burr grinder and find best settings to fully enjoy coffee on any machine. The quality of shots is as good as you will find anywhere.
The only downside is the single boiler, but that's understandable at this price point. I will upgrade at some point. If Gaggia put out a dual boiler similar to the Classic, it would be a hit.
Highly recommend over all the over brands sold in domestic stores. I got mine for $500 from Harvey Norman, very happy customer!

Coffee gets better
We've had a Gaggia classic for about 10 years. No problems! Replaced the steam wand with a $37 upgrade (our son's idea). We've just purchased a new grinder (K3) and this now is showing the full potential of the Gaggia. Our son now has Gaggia and he's also 'lovin it'. The fact that it's all quality parts inside means replacements are available if needed.

Great espresso
I've had this machine for 12 months now and have had no problems with it. It took me a while to get the most out of it and am now very happy with the results. It takes a while for the boiler to heat up to optimum temp and I believe the boiler capacity is a bit small. I use a burr grinder directly into the commercial size portafilter and reckon the espresso quality is as good as any I've tried. I replaced a delonghi icona machine with the Gaggia and noticed the difference straight away. Would recommend this machine to anyone wanting a manual espresso machine.

Love it!
I've had this coffee machine for 6+ years and I use it every day.
It is very simple to use, once you get the grind setting correct.
It makes a great coffee which is comparable to a professional made coffee (if not better sometimes).
I have replace the handle once, which was not a big deal to find a replacement.
I also choose to use my own Coffee Tamper.
I removed the outer plastic of the milk frother (I kept the inner part to get some additional length) as I like to make my own froth. I have never received a complaint from my cappuccinos. :) ...Read more

Awesome Espresso Machine But Not Great At Frothing Milk
Had it for 7 years now. Fantastic espresso make not so much a good cappuccino or latte maker. I had to replace the milk frother nozzle with a Saeco one. It can now froth milk but only one glass at a time.
Had to replace a couple of small parts but not too major.
You really really really need to buy the three way valve cleaner or else your coffee will become bitter.
The machine has a shared boiler between the water and the steam so you have to let the steam build up after making the espresso.
Still a very good machine for what it is. Don't pay full price but wait until Myers has a discount on.

Patience produces a virtuous Flat-White, time after time
I have three of these machines, one at home, one at the weekender and one in my office for the last 10 years.
The joy of grinding and making a cup of coffee first thing in the morning and again later in the day is undeminished after all this time.
Repair wise, have replaced the boiler on 2/3 and froth nozzle x 2 with stainless steel units. I learned ages ago to use demineralised water, and at my weekender, I use rainwater from the tank- no issues with either water variant since I switched to either water sources five years ago.

Somewhere between absolutely brilliant and supremely frustrating
On it's day, the Gaggia Classic will produce a coffee that's up there with the best Melbourne cafe. When that day comes however is not under the barrista's control.
This is at the same time a great machine and a frustrating machine. It is neigh on impossible to get consistently good results from this machine. One cup will be perfect, the next bitter then the next sour (repeat). When you hit that sweet spot and the shot is good, it really is good. I always get good crema and good micro frothing most of the time.

fact that that boiler temperature of this machine fluctuates by as much as 10c during a shot. There are countless blogs / forum posts / youtube videos out there that attempt to show how to get good temperature out of the machine, but through years of daily experience with this machine, years of trying every tip and trick out there, I've learned that hitting the right temperature is primarily a matter of luck. There are techniques which improve chances of a good shot; Allowing good warm up time will help; Not purging before brewing will help; making sure your portafilter is warmed up will help, as do a myriad of other little things you can find on the interwebs, however there is no silver bullet that consistently resolves brew temperature issues. The issue stems from the fact that the boiler in this machine is small and as soon as extraction begins, cold water is pumped from the reservoir into the boiler, dropping the temperature. Sometimes you'll start brewing at the right time within the heating cycle and the cup will come out perfect, then the next will be bad. Its frustrating most shots and brilliant sometimes. If I had my time again I'd save up for something that allows me to brew more consistent.1 comment

Happy with it soo far, could have been better
Makes good espresso and well built ( commercial type portafilter and 3 way solenoid valve), wish they would have not saved money on boiler and cheap plastic frothier that blows off occasionally while steaming splashing milk all over the place .

'Simply' a brilliant machine
I've had this machine for over 12 years now and just can't destroy it. I've taken it in for repair after around 6 years for a service when then thermo-switch went on it. This unit with its 18bar pressure will push a golf ball through a straw so you know when you have your grind wrong when it struggles to push water through. Since having it, i've replaced the plastic group handle three times, and grouphead seal once. Its made 2 cups a day min for over 12years and has not missed a beat. I do clean it regularly but would not say i'm fanatic o...Read more
n the weekly clean. I've been barista trained and can make a perfect coffee with this unit almost every time although the crema does vary based on the coffee you use. (Hint: lets just say supermarket coffee is not a good starting point. find a coffee roaster.) I grind my own and purchased a Sunbeam burr grinder for $189 thinking it would die after a year of two…. ha ha.. its still going and another product story. I've replaced the steam wand with the Rancilio arm kit to get better results but it comes at a cost of not being able to move it. Some little gripes with this unit is it takes "too long" to steam milk and the thermostat doesnt keep up with the steam production. eg. having guests around you can spend a good 8-10 mins steaming milk for four cups. Its single boiler makes it difficult to continuously produce coffee and turning from steam to expresso sends out a mass of steam through the group head. My other gripe is the plastic handle, although replaceable, becomes brittle after time from tampering and cracks at the base. Note to Gaggia, the metal handle should continue all the way through and not be connected via a screw. This unit is fairly noisey and not good if you dont want to wake the house up after a hangover. Finally, for the price you cannot go past this unit for the quality of the build and performance for a home unit. Highly Recommended for the price.1 comment

An excellant home espresso machine
I haven't got a single bad thing to say about this machine. I've owned my machine since March 2008 and it has had daily use every day since then, and it has not failed to this day. The machine is understated and looks great on the kitchen bench. When I was looking at buying an espresso machine, at the time I was doing lots of research and the general consensus on coffee internet forums was this machine was the best value for money home espresso machine on the market. And, they were right.
The machine is easy to clean, the tray and water ...Read more
tank are easy to remove when they do need cleaning. The group head/handle is a standard commercial size so you can use a commercial tamper (I bought one to properly pack in the coffee). The machine provides a constant pressure for an espresso shot but it is up to you to measure the shot and to stop the shot when you think you've got what you want. I personally like this as I like to watch the crema and coffee extract, then turn it off when it just starts to change colour. That way I know I've got all flavour and no bitterness. The steam wand that comes with it is OK, however I upgraded mine with a stainless steel wand conversion kit. It's a very cheap upgrade to an already awesome machine, and it's a DIY job. There are many step by step instructions on the internet and from memory the whole upgrade took not even half an hour. And don't worry - you don't need to open the machine at all - the whole conversion is done from working on the outside of the machine. In the nearly 7yrs of daily service of this machine, I've only ever needed to get it professional serviced ONCE. A professional service on the machine (again from memory) cost me around $120 or something - and that was including all replacement parts. The o-ring seal in the group head needed replacing - and one tell tale sign of this is you have water/coffee leaking around the group handle. The part itself is inexpensive and you can DIY the replacement of that yourself aswell (again, there are many step by step instructions on the net about it). However I had my machine fully serviced and descaled. When I got it back it was like brand new again. That was 3yrs ago and it hasn't missed a beat yet. Of course - you should always practise some basic maintenance. Use filtered water if possible in the machine, and descale regularly. Also invest in a good grinder. You could have the best coffee machine in the world but if your beans aren't ground properly, there's not much the machine can do. I would recommend this machine to anybody looking at a long lasting, and commercial quality machine that they would like to use at home. If you want digital displays, gauges, dual pumps and simultaneous coffee and steaming options - this machine isn't for you. But if you want simple, good coffee, and you prefer to be in control of all the elements of making a good coffee - this is the one you should buy. Mine has served me well for years, and if it ever died - I wouldn't hesitate at buying another one.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Issues with thermostat and fuse on machine bought in 2011 and Philips no interest in replacing
We have an older machine bought in 2008 which we have been very happy with. We have spent more than the original acquisition cost of the 2011 machine on replacing fuse and thermostat annually as the latter keep failing and the the first one keeps blowing. Philips who owns the brand now have had no interest in replacing the machine and have only offered to pay $33.00 out of a repair cost of $193.00. Their customer care service have also been disappointing to deal with. 8 months ago it was hard to find any information on who was the authorised repairer in Sydney. Web-site has since been updated.

Excellent
This machine is perfect for home use, especially for the price (purchased on Amazon UK for a great saving compared to prices locally).
Like others, I recommend buying the unpressurised filter baskets (at around $8 each, not an expensive change), and upgrading the steam wand (around $60) if you are a drinker of milk-based coffee. All these accessories/parts can be purchased online in Australia from the coffeeparts website. Love this coffee machine
Always reliable, doesn't complaint, no mess, no mother card, just simple espresso the way it should be, the pump is really strong so you might find that the size of the ground equalizes the commercial machines, so some brands of supermarket coffee which are made for plungers wont give the perfect crema.

I would like to ask..."what material is the heating tank made of?..I had a coffee gaggia in the 1980's and after about 12 years the electrics went all brittle so I decided to tear it apart to check the heating tank..lo and behold it was aluminium and was corroded badly and there was tons of aluminium dust at the bottom..this is what I was drinking?
I hope before you purchase one ask if the heating tank is alum.. or stainless. Go for stainless if you can get it.
