Don't bother- because GIO obviously don't
We had a 'flood incident" which affected the floor in the en suite and carpet in the bedroom. Nothing major- never had a H& C claim before. Called GIO, they took minimum details and were more interested in getting the XS paid than anything. What they tell you is different to what happens because they OUTSOURCE EVERY TASK. Someone will call in 1-2 hours re water clean up- Yes, Flood Emergency Network did (FEN) call to tell me that Flood Response would call in an hour and be there today. Okay, so Flood Response call in an hour- Great! Want to co...Read more
me out the next day- No. It needs to be addressed today or losses are not being mitigated, say I. So guy comes that day, dryers, humidifiers, 1/3 carpet ripped up, lino and cement sheet ripped up in bathroom- leaving exposed, raised nail heads. He wrote a report- assume it's an assessor report of some type. 3 days of machines running. Nothing else from GIO. So I call to ask what happening, awaiting report from FEN ( initial contractor) apparently they have 7 days to submit report (7 WORKING DAYS). Meanwhile, we have a bathroom with exposed nail heads and a bedroom that poses a trip hazard to my disabled husband. then we get a call from Home Repair ( subsidiary of GIO, owned by Suncorp). He is the ASSESSOR but only for the flooring of the bath room and and structural issues. He comes, measures BOTH rooms, makes comments about the dust in the bathroom ( why would I clean up if trades people will be in and out?). So I ramp up the issue with GIO- we are now a week and a half post incident and all I have to show is bare flooring, visits from 2 assessors-one was to look over the bathroom flooring, the other the carpet ( because apparently carpet comes under contents). Home Repair come and measure both rooms- last week, apparently they are authorised to undertake both carpet and flooring- GIO office was not aware of this and had to check it. Next came, Carpet Xpress- fellow makes an appointment, measures the area AGAIN, comes with no scissors to take a sample, has no samples, we apparently have to travel to another suburb to choose once it's authorised. So where are we now... there is a painter coming Weds ( 20/1) to paint the wall ( as advised by Home Repair), no one has responded to the issue of the damaged dresser as it appears it's not anyone area, and not one person has asked about other damages. We have no idea what is happening with the flooring, GIO say it will be done by the end of this week, Carpet Xpress say it's not. One says we get to chose colour for covering replacement and the other says no- it's like for like. That's fine but the bathroom covering was taken by the Flood Response guy so they have no idea what it was like to get 'like for like.' One of my concerns with this the the duplicity of handling by multiple parites who have no contact with each other, the other is that once the floor covering is authorised, that how do I know that GIO don't ok X per metre but the contractor show us a series of products at y per metre and pocket the difference? call me cynical, but I trust no one in this as every person I have dealt with in this matter has been, either knowingly or unwittingly, deceptive in what they are telling me. Misleading conduct is a serious matter and GIO is a prime example of it.

Always choose your own repairer, never use theirs as they use and are very cheap, ombudsmen your rig
Always been with Gio, changing soon as I turn 31 as I qualify better competitors. They lie to you, they laugh at you, the assessment repair link the assessor's they have no idea what's going on until the ombudsmen gives them a kick on their bottoms. Gio your company is going downhill and watch out every time they renew your policy make sure you read it thoroughly and address any changes because guaranteed they would have made a lot of changes you won't be told about.

Insured with GIO since 1978
One small claim in the '80's till storms hit us on Lake Macquarie a two years ago and have had three significant claims since then, one involved a complete new bathroom, another floor coverings in living areas, and a third for stolen valuables
In the first instance it was initially rejected due to the assessor not knowing the meaning of 'breach' (as used in report by their plumber hehe) however once clarified it was accepted and all done in a timely efficient manner, the claim for flooring was completely hassle free and the third for the valua...Read more

Shocking customer service! I'm writing this as a warning to others considering going with GIO. They have caused lots of stress and displayed extreme unprofessionalism. Many times I waited around all day for them to inspect my claim only to be told countless excuses. Finally I've had enough and I will be changing companies!!!

Fast and friendly service
While away on holiday the roof of our garage got damaged and we had water poor in and soak a heap of boxes and beds we had stacked in there ready to move house when we got back. As the house was a strata house I only had contents insurance with GIO but from the first phone call they were efficient and helpful. The assistant on the phone quickly set up the claim and I could add documents and images to the website. A client manager called me within a couple of days and walked me through the claims process.
After uploading photos of the damage...Read more
and our best guess at replacement costs for all the items (over $10,000 worth of damage) the claim was paid out within the week. So absolutely nothing to complain about as the service was friendly, easy and fast. I was going to insure my new house with Woolworths Insurance as the quote was a little cheaper (about $150/yr) but with the quality of service I got from GIO I'm going to stay with them.Similar opinion? Do Not Insure with GIO (Unless you want a nervous breakdown)
I have been insured with GIO since the 1970's. My house was damaged in the April 2015 storm and at the time of writing this (5 months later) still nothing has been done. Not once in all that time, no one from GIO has contacted me either by phone or email. I have to ring every few weeks to check to see how my claim is going. Just today I have been told that at least it will be another 17 working days before someone can review the file. The damage has been quoted and verified by a GIO representative, a couple of months ago. But that is as far as ...Read more
it went. I had to wait 3.5 months to get a clothes line as the original was damaged by a falling tree. You have to fight all the way, the claims staff is of no help what so ever. Whilst I am waiting for someone selected by GIO to repair my house. the rest of the house looks like a storage depot as all the contents from the damaged rooms are stored throughout the house. Message to GIO you just plain lack humanity and consideration. I did not expect instant repair but 5 months and still waiting, Just not good enough. So be warned do not insure with GIO or any of their other insurance company they own.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Beware the fine details. Terrible Service. Do NOT trust.
Insured with GIO for 10 years without a claim. Our hose was robbed and despite being assured that we were covered they managed to fine a clause in the contract that they would only pay $4000 of our $30,000 in watches stolen. They will be fine till you make a claim then they will screw you over. Customer service was terrible unless you call them every week and explain your problems they would just forget about you. Do NOT insure with GIO or any other Suncorp Brand.

A water pipe burst in our shower recess in early June - the first Assesor came bout within days, then a second Assesor finally came out to look at the damage on July 28th and told us he would get back to us within 48 hours it's now been 240 hours and not so much as a phone call - let alone any repairs!

Abyssmal Service
My husband & I have 10 insurance policies with the GIO. We have been ciustomers for 27 years. Our last 3 claims, 2 not at fault car accidents and hail damage have been handled pathetically. They took 6 weeks to respond to our claim. Everytime you ring them, claims that is, there is a wait of at least 25 minutes and they always blame the Queensland storms. It is now 10 weeks since the claim was submitted and despite numerous phone calls, letters and Ombudsman contact, they just dont care. Still havent had an assessor come out. Disgraceful
Avoid at all costs. Minimal staff answering phones means minimal service.
Took two weeks to acknowledge claim then they ignored any contact attempts via email.
Five weeks after anzac day hail storms and still no one has come to our property.
They keep telling us to be patient.
Gio think a five week delay is acceptable because they are inundated with claims, never take ownership of their mistakes. Advise they are still getting through qld claims. Nsw unfortunately are not as important as our interstate cousins it seems.
Their complaints department also like to make yopu feel like you are impatient and should understand.
Their slogan is its a trust thing, what a joke !
Never, ever, go with gio suncorp. !

ONE YEAR and still house unrentable!
I am dismayed with this company. Having multiple policies over many years I thought our rental property was in good hands. Wrong! Over a year now since we first alerted them to the damage to our rental property and still no resolution. House unliveable! I really think they are hoping we'll get sick of waiting for them and repair it ourselves.

GIO - Great service
GIO in NSW - Excellent service. Late last year, a friend of mine was overseas when a bathroom pipe burst upstairs, waterfalls everywhere for at least 24hrs. She told me where to find the GIO ins policy. I rang them, established my bona-fides, they assigned a case manager and had a clean-up squad on-site within 3 hrs. Policy was in the name of my friend's husband who had passed away several mont hs earlier. No problem - case manager approved work whilst the necessary stat decs and death cert from friend overseas were arranged. An assessor arrive...Read more
d within a day or two, quotes and a builder assigned within a couple of weeks and smooth sailing. Not only that but they negotiated to allow some renovation works to be done at the same time. Terrible service
So I lodge a simple claim for a cracked TV, and after lodging the claim, go out of my way to find a tv "repairer" (in fact just a second hand tv shop ripping off insurance customers) that's willing to do a report. Every time I call, they knock me back saying I must wait in queue for my correspondence to be reviewed. I explained I had sent everything (quotes, report, invoice for call out fee) required for the claim to settle, and that tv replacement is very important. They wouldnt budge. When I suggested that I replace the TV first then seek reimbursement, they threatened that I might not be fully reimbursed if I do that. Terrible service, what's the use of their call centre?!

Claims Nightmare Change of Policy catches people out who have built in furniture or fittings
My apartment had water damage from a burst pipe on 13 December . Today is 20 January and despite having lodged a claim the next day, have an assessor come they have only this afternoon told me that the policy was changed last year so it no longer covers custom built furniture that is fixed to a wall. In my case that's built in customised wardrobes and a very large desk all beautifully built to fit the space at my expense and stupidly I though still covered. Last week the same consultant Lisa contacted and asked for a letter from my strata mana...Read more
gement insurance company Chubb to confirm this was not covered by the building insurance and so they could process the claim. They have not waited for the letter to arrive before contacting me to inform me of their decision not to cover it. Lisa also claimed they had tried to call me 3 times on 23 December but there is no record of calls on my mobile and when I asked for a log of calls to be sent to me she has told me today along with the good news they cannot provided one. Lisa also tells me when the questions get too difficult to answer or I get upset that she will terminate the call very caring is our Lisa. I have had my policy and the car policy with GIO for years. In fact the first home loan I ever took out was from them. Every time I have rang GIO it took 2 hours to answer in claims (very fast in sales) which they blame on the storm events in Queensland. Since their buy out by the corporate giant Suncorp I can only say watch out its profit not people they are interested in and your policy you thought you had may no longer be the one you have got. When I asked Lisa how I could cover my fixtures if they were not covered under the strata and not now covered by them she told the companies that have also changed to this AAMI and of course Suncorp but no advice as she was then ready to terminate the call. GIO is now as far I am concerned a disreputable enterprise buyer beware. December 8th 2018 Update: Claim delays took 6 weeks and ate our rental protection I have been with GIO for 40 years and have 4 policies with them. We had water damage caused by a burst pipe in the common property of our investment unit. GIO took 5 weeks to eventually give us a cash settlement effectively using up the rental protection we had with them as the tenants had to vacate because of the damage. Their red tape was agony and for no good reason with the last assessor taking 6 working days to lodge their report (that was the third assessor) We asked for the first case manager to be changed as he did nothing. The carpet we wanted to replace which was the same as the original is now out of stock and being right on Christmas getting trades people is very difficult. The carpet company GIO sent us to tried to replace the wool carpet with cheap nylon. Bottom line as Suncorp now owns GIO they are part of a big uncaring company. They did not respond when I told them i was cancelling 4 policies. Suncorp was named in the Banking Royal Commission for poor service and now I know why.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

45% increase in 1 year and using a psychic to predict the future...
Just happened to come across an old email id sent to the ombudsman and thought it was time I rated GIO on here. Sorry, I was with GIO about 2 years, but still think its worth me posting this. I've cut out anything that isn't relevant and re-worded some parts to make it shorter
I currently hold a home and contents insurance policy with GIO for a total amount of $540 for one year.
I received a renewal notice recently with a cost of $785. When I enquired about the $245 price increase, I was told that the amount my home was insured for had be...Read more

Abysmal Claims Handling. Have made a stressful and traumatic experience 100 times more difficult
I have been with GIO for over 3 years now. Minor claims (e.g. accidental damage to one specific item) have been dealt with adequately, albeit slowly & requiring consistent follow up on our behalf. However we this year we made a major claim as a result of a house fire. 9 weeks later and we have no scope of works, our contents claim remains unresolved and effectively nothing has happened except GIO instigating legal proceedings regarding the fire origin (not against us).
We have received conflicting information on a consistent basis.

e unable to speak to our claim manager whenever we call and instead have to leave a message for her to return our call. Probably 2 out of 3 calls are then returned, at best the following business day. It takes about a week for an email to be responded to - if we receive a response at all. Our claim manager has declined to pay out items which are covered under our policy (such as utility connections at our rental accommodation) and has not responded to objections regarding this. Claim manager has failed to follow up on reports that are being waited on despite us requesting they be chased up. We were told on the day we were to move into our rental (from serviced accommodation) that we couldn't move any of our contents as our contents claim hadn't been settled. So we have effectively been camping in our rental for the last 5 weeks. Alternative was to stay in serviced accommodation and then be out of pocket for the remaining time we need to be in temporary accommodation. Refused to pay out any initial essential items (such as bedding, mattresses, baby items etc.) to cover the time it would take them to assess our contents claim. Have been treated with disdain, impatience and made to feel like we are being unreasonable for expecting to be covered as per our policy throughout the process. We have a repair job that should take at most 2-3 months work, we will be lucky to be back in our house before Christmas, have suffered considerable financial strain due to the delays and claim mishandling, and the stress and frustration of the process has taken a toll on our family life, our marriage and our mental health.1 comment

er to get the work (eg allocating $5k to replace a $10k heating and cooling system) as a result they are continually cutting corners where possible, and where they think we wont notice) to make up the cost: not replacing our damaged roof rafters or framing, using cheaper products where possible rather than the same quality equivalents to which we are entitled to under our policy. The only option for us is to check on site each day and raise the issues with the GIO. GIO has no checks in place to ensure that the work being done is as per the scope (the same scope which took 5 months to write). Builder just blames any deficiencies on various contractors "oh I didn't know they had done that". Repairers kept using a toilet that was disconnected from water and could not be flushed so house stinks of human waste. Our garden is being used as a dump site for building materials and debri.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Extremely poor service
I was claiming for workers compensation and discovered that unfortunately the company I work for had selected GIO.At no point GIO was interested in my claim, repeating over and over that I would received nothing.
When I was finally called by an agent from GIO, the only questions were about how much I was earning, not the circumstances of the accident. Clearly it was a waste of time, and their message was delivered with such contempt,
