I wish to coat 25 square metres of merbau decking. The decking is 95% under cover (18yrs) and grey (never been coated) and with very little moss on about 6 boards. This deck is laid with the reed facing up. I am little bit hesitant using DexPress by reading all the negative comments on drying times, any advice ???

Our deck is under cover but, from our experience we wouldn't use this product on the floor again. We've always had felt furniture protectors under table and chair legs, but these have now left marks. We didn't have this problem with Sikkens.

Hi Alan,

Dexpress is an exterior decking finish and fine to use undercover in this situation, however you may find it will take a little longer to cure as it doesn’t have direct UV exposure which does harden or cure the coating quicker. Changing weather conditions will also effect the curing/drying period (please see ideal temperatures to coat on our label instructions) as we have more moisture and dew around this time of the year.

1. To prepare the weathered timber, use Haymes Wood Cleaner as per instructions to remove the weathered grey fibres (dead wood) and the algae.
2. When the timber is cleaned and completely dry, apply the Dexpress as per the directions.

Tip: Now the weather is cooler, it would be better to apply the second coat after a couple of days. That will give the first coat a good chance to cure through.

Hope this answers your question Alan, we can also assist with further information through our wonderful Customer Service help line on 1800 033 431

Can I go over older deck with 2 year old intergrain ultra deck coating with dexpress once I have sanded and cleaned with oxcilic acid

Hi Richard,
Yes you can, but please see our recommendations below to recoat.

For best results, remove all previous coatings.
1. If surface is in sound condition, thoroughly clean the surface with Haymes Wood Cleaner as per instructions.
2. Ensure surface is clean, dry and free of contaminates.
3. Conduct an adhesion test (for compatibility)

Adhesion test
1. Apply Dexpress on a cleaned, small inconspicuous area, allow to dry for 24 hrs.
2. Cut a small X into the coating and apply sticky tape, pull off sharply and inspect.
If the tape removes any of the coating, the surface is not compatible and must be sanded back to bare.
3. If the tape does not remove any coating, sand off text area and follow application directions.

Follow application directions if all well.
Thanks, Haymes Team

Late December we had our merbau deck redone by a professional painter The walls are fine but the actual deck has been left with a milky finish I watched him scrub with deck clean, then hose it all off before sanding and rewashing What has gone wrong and how do we fix it please????

1 answer

Hi Jenny,
The reason dexpress or any wood finish will go milky is because the wood hasn’t completely dried before finishing . The moisture is therefore ‘trapped ‘ under the coating ..usually the milkiness will disappear with time . Hope this helps

I have a deck that is 3 years old and treated with dexpress at that time... now needing a freshen up. Do I need to sand right back, just a light sand or no sanding prior to reapplying?

A light sanding is a good idea, however after that you must completely scrub the whole surface with Haymes Wood Cleaner using a stiff nylon broom then wash surface down with fresh water, let dry, then apply 2 to 3 coats of Dexpress, 3 coats if in Queensland.

Prices may be different from store to store and State to State PaintRight Stores best option, and can be on promotion at times, what i do know when it comes to price Dexpress when applied correctly works out the best deal as it lasts a lot longer than other brands. Thanks for your question.

Any experiences of using dexpress on jarrah

BENJI

Hello Matt, Firstly, what is it you want to coat, a deck, window frames, table or furniture, inside or outside, also has the timber if being a deck weathered for at lease 4 months, my answer may be different depending on what it is you are doing, as Jarrah sometimes is difficult to penetrate with some coatings, let me know, so i can advise the right product .

Its a a tounge and groove jarrah deck. Mainly covered but has an exposed section. It has been down for 3 years. I have used livos oil and have been recommended the dexpress. Thanks.

BENJI

YEP, you are on the right track, but firstly and most important, because you are changing from oil to a water based system, you must use Haymes Wood Cleaner first, 3-1 mix with water, and you must scrub it and work it in well with a stiff nylon broom, once done leave it about 15 minutes, but do not let it dry out, if it drys out, re-wet it with more wood cleaner, then hose off completely, let dry, apply 2 coats of Dexpress Natural, if in Queensland 3 coats please, or 3 anyhow, Dexpress is a brilliant product as you will learn. Happy to advise.

How long do I need to wait after staining before I can hose down the deck with water ??

2 answers
Alu
Alu

I would wait 24 hours at least. Call Haymes if you’re unsure - they were extremely helpful over the phone. I used Dexpress Natural around 6 months ago and I’m very happy with it. The water still pools on top of the timber which tells me the product is still working strong

BENJI
BENJI

Dexpress takes 4 weeks to fully cure, however hosing it down i would leave it at lease a week to toughen up, remember weather conditions do apply, so leave a week please.

I see this is used to stain and seal weathered bamboo. Will it work on dried bamboo purchased from a supplier? I hear you can sand off the waxy layer, but, I''ve done a good deal of sanding with no luck with conventional wood stains

Hello Tom, Rustoleum make a product called Bamboo Oil specifically for Bamboo surfaces, it comes in Natural or Black 4Lt or 10Lt

OK, Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it will work. I'm in the USA though. I can find it on the Australian Zinsser Rustoleum website, but, not the US one. I've written them we'll see. Not a lot of bamboo used for fences and such where I am in the US, but, there are areas it grows and is common. I've sent them a note to see how to get some.

We have used your Dexpress product on our deck (previously used Sikkens). Why, after 5 weeks, it is STILL sticky and leaves footprints everywhere whether wearing shoes, bare feet or socks.

It Shouldn’t be. 5 weeks to dry is never heard of before. Have you followed all the application procedures?

Sonia

Deck has been in place for 9 years and previously coated (and maintained) with oil-based Sikkens Deck product.
Deck timber is Iron Bark. Majority of the deck is under cover.
Before application of your product the deck surface was professionally sanded and prepared.
2 coats of Dexpress applied using a mohair roller.

I used simply wood care high gloss exterior clear varnish on a stained bar top and it’s still soft after 3 days. Is this normal?

1 answer
BENJI
BENJI

Hello Fred, You have the wrong product, for inside use you should have got Haymes Easy Floor Gloss, goes very hard, also if you happen to get some UV on it, then there Norglass Weatherfast Gloss, the product you have will not fully harden as it is only used for exterior surfacer eg window frames, doors, because it needs to stay flexible.

My new treated pine deck was extremely badly painted with simply woodcare dexpress natural, by an inexperienced tradesperson. Each slat has shades of light, dark & darker colours. Areas where the applicator was left to stand, so a much darker colour. Drips of thick stain, I guess from the applicator. HELP! What can I do, please?

2 answers
Karl
Karl

That sounds like someone did not apply it evenly and one coat at a time. You could try using an orbital sander and sand it back before applying the stain again properly. You would really need to sand it back to bare pine again if you can.

Thank you, I believe that's more than likely what happened.
