Perfect Pot. Great Product for the Price
I use the Homemaker brand of cast iron pot to bake bread with excellent results. For this purpose only, I remove the bakelite knob handle and plug the hole before placing the pot in the oven. Very effective in retaining heat for bread baking. For everyday cooking of stews on the stovetop this pot also performs admirably. Very satisfied.
Best kitchen appliance
Wanted a casserole dish and did not want to pay a fortune, was going to get glass, but saw this and at 25 bucks thought even if it is no good no great loss.
It is the best pot I have ever bought, I use it both on top of stove, searing, stewing, soups and in the oven, roasting, casseroles and have not found a problem with it and it is very easy to clean.
I am now looking for a set of enamelled cast iron frypans/pots etc... But cannot find them as cheap as Kmart, and they only sell a couple of different sizes...
Need more styles and sizes.....
Excellent value. Very sturdy.
This was an unplanned purchase. I bought it when I saw what a great price it was, as I have always wanted a cast iron casserole dish that could go from the stovetop to the oven. Being cast iron the casserole is very heavy. Any bigger and I think it would be too heavy for me to lift when it has food in it. The handles are well designed and big enough to get a good grip before lifting. I did find it took a lot of elbow grease to clean after I burnt something in it!
Fantastic value. Simple, functional design. Great colour. Lid fits well.
Difficult to clean after burning food!
I had been looking at buying a good cast iron cooking pot when I noticed another friend had the rather inexpensive K-Mart Homemaker branded pot. After hearing what they thought of it I had to purchase one and see for myself if it was any good.
I bought a round cast iron pot for $29. This pot is brlliant for the money. You can buy them in round, oval and oblong shape. The round one I bought would easily cook for 4 to 6 people depending on the meal.
They can go on the hotplates as well as in the oven. When it comes to washing up it is a breeze. Nothing seems to stick to it. I really don't think you can go past these pots for value.
Great quality for not much money.
Questions & Answers
Can this be used to bake a loaf of sourdough bread?
Hi, Just want to say yes, it can be used to bake sourdough bread or any other bread. Cast iron pots do need to be tempered prior to using in hot ovens. I tempered this brand cast iron pot with very light brushing with oil and put in a cold oven and then bring up to higher temperature for baking. In fact, always start this or any other type / brand of cast iron pot in a cold oven and then bring up to required temperature. Never place a cold cast iron pot in a hot or very hot oven - there is risk of pot (any brand) shattering.
You can put the unbaked dough in the cold pot - set the oven to desired temperature and bake for required time (cold bake method). Or, put pot in cold oven; heat pot to desired temperature - then take out heated pot and drop 'dough' into heated pot and place back in oven. This method is more common but requires care to avoid seriously burning hands or counter top. Have mittens and heat mat ready before starting to bake with this latter method.
Good luck. Alvin Borthwick
