It has to be the best mower around
I bought one a couple of years ago (with a whipper snipper and blower) and its great for domestic lawns and some handyman jobs I do. Starts first go if you put Honda oil (or 10W-30) in the sump (not in the petrol). I put Victa 4-stroke oil in it and the engine turns over slowly and won't start in winter because the oil was too viscous. Some other minor problems require ongoing maintenance, like the rear catcher plate corroded out in the first year because wet grass stuck to it, and the rear safety rubber splits and needs replacing about once a ...Read more
year. Also the air filter is poorly located - in dustry conditions it gets clogged quickly. Being 4 stroke, like all of them, it is not so good on the side of steep sloping lawns as the oil can run out the air filter - so you have to mow with the air filter on the up side. Reliable, cuts slightly wider than other domestic mowers Catcher plate corrosion1 comment

Wanted, cant buy this model in New Zealand any more
In the job of lawn care, I have found this model great, I would like to buy 2 more, but the dealers tell me they don't sell them any more, so I brought a new hru196,and found that it is to heavy, doesn't like to pick up wet grass, I have tried different blades, people in the lawn care game want then they are like gold, Time is money and doing a good job, come on Honda sell me 2 of them.
Light weight, catch in any weather, great engine,
the only thing i could say is the handle for gound adjustment, make stronger

Happy Honda !
I have two Honda mowers and they are the best I have them regularly serviced. If you want a machine that the professionals use and will do the job every time then get a Honda. They can be expensive to buy however you get what you pay for and they are worth it in the long run.
Quality, reliability and durability.
none to mention.

Today I stopped buying and recommending honda push mowers
Honda Power Equipment you have lost the plot with your mowers.Useless clutch adds 10kg & complexity. The half blocked shute design is stupid.Look like they have been designed by a Uni student who lives on campus and has never mowed a lawn. Why take a great product and turn it into a useless crapbox.Went into Dealer to buy two HRU196D mowers today.Looked at them and thought it was a joke.
The new design handle mounting bracket.
Uneeded heavy clutch.A shute that I couldnt pass wind out of.

Worst Mower Ever
The Honda HRU21 Self Propelled Mower was sold to me as the "Must Have Mower" for the commercial operator. I have had the mower for 3 months and used it 6 times. As a commercial lawn contractor I mow lawns most days. This mower is the worst I have ever used!!!!!! It is the most heavy, cumbersome and back breaking piece of equipment I have ever used. Please....do not buy one. The mower is impractical and extremely overpriced. The drive engagement for far too "abrupt" and the drive wheels leave divots and marks. This is mainly due to the excessive...Read more
weight of the machine. I cant stress enough how ridiculously heavy this machine is. In addition, Honda's after sales service was terrible. When I raised my concerns they said that I should be cutting grass at the highest or close to the highest blade setting. That's not real helpful! Easy to start but arent all brand new mowers. Far too heavy. Drive system engagement far too abrupt...Leaves divots and Marks every time it is engaged.2 comments

ushes itself. If also found it did leave divots in its tracks if the ground and lawn was really wet, but nothing that doesnt stand back up by the next day. Sounds a bit like the problem was the operator not the machine. Just my 2 cents worth i found it cut alot better and smoother then my previous self propelled model. Plus the automatic blade brake when you take your hands off the handle bar is great because you dont get heaps of dust blowing in your face as you remove your full catching bag of grass.Yeah right Jack. Nice to hear from honda at last.

Happy overall.
Ive had the HRU 216 for 4 years now.
I am not a professional gardener i just own a large over-grown property on a slope.
Overall i'm really impressed - mainly the engine, so quiet always starts easily and sounds like a helicopter when it idles. Build quality and transmission also flawless.
Only weak point (and sadly an important one, and confirmed by many other reviewers) is the outlet shute - on anything beyong the dryest shortest grass you can be certain of clogging. I no longer bother bagging - grass rarely enters the bag anyway, as it c...Read more

In response to your comment regarding the outlet chute, rest assured that this feedback has been passed up the chain to our sales and R&D team. Design changes start with the end user and this kind of feedback is helpful for future mower models. I'm sure you can appreciate that this feedback can take time to reach the top of the ladder, and that research and development of future models is also time-consuming, so these changes don't happen in months, but rather take years. good mower for the dry, if grass isn't too long
purchased a new honda HRU 196M, M for mulcher, 19 inch cut push mower, i've had the mower for 10 months, mowing about 10 lawns per week as an gardening contractor, the mower is very good in the dry, as long as the grass is not very long, if long the grass clippings block the half size shute, and roll into a ball, nearly stalling the machine !! if the grass is slightly damp, the shute gets blocked up when the catcher is only half full.
the motor is very good, and it has a snorkel which is good when dusty, the machine is quite heavy and gave me ...Read more

Greg, in regards to your comment re the TPE mowers, I would be very hesitant in recommending these mowers. Despite the obvious reason in that it takes away from Honda sales (who am I trying to fool!), one grave concern of Honda's is that TPE MOWERS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS SELLING HONDA-BRANDED ENGINES THAT HAVE HAD THE ENGINE SERIAL NUMBERS GROUND DOWN. Obviously this should be a massive concern to users, because these Honda engines have been created for CHINESE SPECIFICATIONS, NOT AUSTRALIAN SPECIFICATIONS, and they WILL NOT BE COVERED BY ANY HONDA WARRANTY/SERVICE.Thanks Dylan for your obvious wage affected biased feedback.

A very poor mower
This mower continually blocks up due to the small shute. The blade brake is a joke. Why does the public have to allow for idiots. Mowers have been around along time without the need of a blade brake. Honda should go back to the KISS method and once again produce a good mower
Reliable engine. Solid base(weight a slight issue)
Does not catch grass as shute blocks far to easily.

Honda Mower - HRU-196M1 - Well & truly met my high expectations!
I had a Briggs & Stratton that was purchased from Aldi break a wheel axel and found I could not get parts to repair, despite the engine being fine, so this time I did some research on line and the majority of reviews pointed to Honda, particularly from guys who use them for a living and I am happy to say that this mower has well and truly lived up to the expectations I had. I have had this mower for approximately 6-8 months and it DOES actually start first time every time, which I was actually surprised by. It is extremely solid and certainly a...Read more
ppears well built. It's pretty quiet, which is great if,like me, you have young kids that sleep at lunch time on the weekends. The mulching function is extremely handy, especially if you have a lot of leaves, which I do during autumn. It's also good when the lawn is not too high to mow without the catcher and put the mulch straight onto the lawn. The safety of the blade brake is also reassuring if you have kids and with this particular model you can leave the motor running whilst the blade is actually stationary. I did see "ligedyletch" review which raised the issue of the catcher chute getting clogged, but I have not experienced this unless the catcher was absolutely full to the top, but I dont know whether the mulching funtion would assist in alleviating this issue perhaps. You certainly get a lot in the catcher as a result of it being finely cut etc. I find the handle on the cloth catcher really easy to use, but not sure whether the catcher will have the longevity, being constructed of cloth etc. Reliable, solid, great features, especially in relation to safety, quiet The only slight down side would be that it is a little heavy, which is a reflection of the solid construction, but if you are a little older or think this may be a concern especially if you have a large lawn with a slope or hills then perhaps have a look at the self propelled model.1 comment

Superb mower that just purrs along and never misses a beat, the mulching function really works and is no gimmick. I never have had the need to use the catcher so I cant comment on it.
Love it, powerful quiet and economical. This mower has its work cut out, we live on 1.5 acres, and obviously it's not all lawn. However there is still the equivalent of 4-5 smaller blocks. The Honda powers thru the job without any hint of giving up. The finish is superb, any better than a professional ride on mower man has achieved. If you want a serious mower buy this Honda....

Best. Mower. Ever.
After years of near apoplexy caused by lawn mowers designed by people who hate me, I finally caved and bought a "real" mower. My only regret is that I didn't do it a long time ago. This Honda is strong, grunty, reliable, and does a great job, especially mulching. The HRU196D starts first time, every time, even after it has sat for months with fuel in the tank and carb after I forgot to drain it before going overseas. Duh. My only criticism is that the handle locking bolts (halfway up, where you fold it) can come loose and fall out after a few hours mowing. Make sure you periodically check them.
Strong, grunty, reliable, effective.
Watch those handle bolts.

I’ve used a lot of different mowers in my time as a professional mowing contractor, and there are reasons why more contractors use this model than any other machine available in Australia. At nearly $1000 it is an expensive machine but it is also the best machine available. The spare parts network is vast and the availability of parts for machines even as old as 25 years is very reliable. I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve been waiting 6 weeks for parts to arrive – the longest I’ve had to wait is about 3 days, but most common parts ar...Read more
e stocked. Our mowers do about 40 hours per week each and we use Castrol Magnatec oil in the engines to protect from start-up wear. Our Honda engines outlast the rest of the mower by a substantial margin. Even with fastidious maintenance, we will have replaced 40 wheels, 20 rubber flaps, 26 air filters, and 5 spark plugs in the mower’s 5 year life but the engine just won’t die – even after 8,000 hours of work and around 12,000 lawn mows it still isn’t blowing smoke or using extra fuel. In that same time we would have already replaced a Briggs & Stratton Intec engine (their OHC engine to rival Honda) 7 times. So in the long run, the Honda engine and Magnatec oil saves us a lot of money, even if more expensive initially. When this model was first released with the new Chinese-made engine, I had a few reservations about how it would perform compared to the previous model. Honda had changed back to the metal engine housing, and the old air filter design. I was pleasantly surprised, though, at the amount of extra power the engine has, even with 4 high lift blades mounted. The ball bearing wheels are nice and big so the mower doesn’t fall into every crack and undulation, the chassis is made from aluminium so it can’t rust and it’s a bit lighter, the single-lever height adjuster is also nice and the 11 height positions provide a good range of cutting heights. If well maintained and not run too fast, the engine will run for around 4 hours on a single 2L tank of fuel (if filled right to the top). The engine is very easy to start and usually starts on the first pull of the rope, and the catcher fills right to the top if the metal catcher screen is regularly cleaned with a scrubbing brush. The mulching plug is also well designed, such that the mower will do a nice job of mulching even if 4 high lift blades are used. The quality of the mulching finish is as good as a dedicated mulcher. In their latest product brochure, Honda touts this model as being suitable for the “serious contractor” yet on-going issues with the model remain unaddressed and Honda seems to have a track record of disregarding criticism. As a professional mowing contractor I’ve found this model has wheels that wear out a lot faster than the previous one. We now change 4 wheels every 6 months at a cost of around $33 each. The rubber flap on the back of the machine wears out every 3 months, and all the joins on the catcher need to be reinforced with self tapping screws and bolts to stop it falling apart when the grass is compressed by foot. There is a hole in the deck, designed for washing the underside of the machine, but while the machine is running, this hole directs grass and dirt into the air filter directly above it – consequently, Honda sells me LOTS of air filters. There is also no way of being able to tell how much fuel is left without unscrewing the cap and letting dirt or water (rain) into the tank. This could be fixed with an LCD display fuel cap or just making the tank out of clear plastic like a line trimmer. The mulching plug is also not a tight fit so up to 6L of grass will sit on top of the plug and, if not regularly emptied, will rust the back hatch – the hatch is made of painted steel, but the side facing the blades understandably loses its protective coat of paint fairly early in the mower’s life.1 comment

HRU196K1 - Great engine but poorly engineered catcher design. Not worth the money.
I always wanted to own a Honda mower due to their 1 pull start and reliability so I purchased at HRU196K for $930 but was let down with the mower chassis and catcher design after getting it home.
I would not recommend this mower due to the catcher design alone because it is extremely frustrating even with dry grass and wish I had only come across this website before purchasing my mower…

previously said four was best! Also small aperture for grass exit into catcher - have a good look before buying. All this and not to mention the ridiculous engine stopping device, each time lever on handle is released! Can understand a blade release but engine stopping each time...........wonder how long the starter mechanism will work after starting engine 10-30+ times per mow, depending on lawn size? Suggest one looks carefully at other options - there are products with strong plastic catchers and ability to pick up wet grass without spillage out there!I can't understand you, where do you think the grass is going to go if the catcher is full?what do you think the catcher should empty itself so you don't spill grass when you empty it.
Logan the problem being is that you have to clear the shute every time you fill a bag especially if there is any hint of moisture. In other ealier models with a full open shute there was no shute to clear.

You get what you pay for, and this is worth the extra investment.
After my parent's Honda push mower surpassed 25 years (still going strong), I wanted to get a Honda as well. However, the price was a bit high, so we did lots of research. It kept coming back to Honda for the best long term product value.
It's definitely ideal to have the rear wheel drive, especially on hilly lots. It has the power to work up the hill, so you don't have to. Starts up first time, every time. The mulch and catch feature is fantastic. No grass in bags, and the cuts blend in well with the grass. Also the unique three speed option is perfect for switching between long stretches of grass and more cramped spaces.
Reliable brand, easy start, great features.
Accelorator bar could probably be a bit more robust at the hinges.
