CRV auto - shudder in rear - beware
apparently this is common - about 750,000 hits on google. Shudder in rear diff/CV thingy, at 40-60 km, generally on the change of gear in the auto 5 speed. Persists after changing fluid. Persists with new tyers. Very disappointing - Honda does not seem to want to fix this problem that would have been well known to Honda at the time the 2005-06 cars hit the market. What gives, Honda?! And yes...serviced on time, by Honda service centre.

Mine too developed a shudder around 60kph, which translated to 1500rpm. Flicking off the OD raised the revs to approx 2200 - shudder went. I did some research and it seems a common problem - Honda's... Read more
recommended trans service interval is way too long and you should have a tranny flush done every 40thou k's. And make sure they do the full 5x flush - they should drain the trans fluid, fill with new, then drive it until tranny is warm; drain, replace, repeat 5 times. It adds about $600 to a service, but that's cheap compared to a new transmission. Since I had mine properly flushed and serviced last year, the shudder was gone from day 1 and has not come back. It's still a delight to drive and recently I took it from Adelaide to Qld and return - 5000+k's in less than 2wks and it didn't miss a beat the whole trip. Drove itself basically - all I had to do was stay awake! Next service will be the major 160k one, and two CV seals will need replaced. But everything else is still perfect. Tyre wear very even and good; averaging just on 9l/100k combined. Best has been 7.8 and worst about 12 (towing a trailer and doing multiple trips in heavy traffic whilst moving house). It still gets 5 stars from me!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Fuel consumption 2002 Honda CRV Automatic
Hi, we have a 2002 Honda CRV automatic that is just perfect except for the fuel consumption. It returns approximately 14.5 ltrs/100 kms. My wife drives it daily and we fill it up once a week with about 50 liters of ULP after having done between 320 - 350 kilometers. It has been back to the Honda dealer time and again and we keep getting told that they cannot find anything wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? How was it repaired?
Spacious, comfortable for a tall driver
14.5 liters per 100 kilometers travelled.

he city though. I get about half the economy as there are a huge amount of stop starts in the city with lights etc. And i should add mine is a manual. Not sure if that changes anything. I also use cruise control a lot.
No cruise control on mine.......Full time 4-wheel drive. I get about 600 km to a full tank which costs me roughly $ 21.00 USD. Is that good ? in the urban areas and traffic it is obviously lower.
Hi, I have had 2 CRV's (sports- cant find anything else as good for the price!) I get @ 9.7 /100km average - have done 200,000 KMS in my current car - never had a problem in any of them......and I am ... Read more

Very pleasing...
Just bought this car. Been doing a lot of research over the past 2mths. Didn't need/want to buy new, so was looking for a good used vehicle. Given lifestyle, needed something more than a sedan, but not a huge Fourby. After narrowing it down, decided on medium SUV or Hatch (eg Mazda6 03-08).
After further searching and looking, it became a decision out of 4; CRV, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester or Suzi Grand Vitara. GV was out early, as not enough around to make a decision. Was looking to spend mid-high teens for a good used vehicle....Read more

highway and around town it never seems to go much higher than 10l/100k. Have done about 10,000k since buying and would recommend thus far. Practical, easy to drive and reliable. Recently had to work interstate for a month, so drove from Adelaide to Tas (& all over) and back, totally without hassle. Found it to be very comfortable on the long hwy stretches too. Still 5 stars for me!Hi john. Great review. You just did all my research for me in one hit :-). Just wondered if you went for an auto or manual model....

Terrible
Bad experience if you travelling on the m5 n m7 and if your Honda service agent have no facilities to take your car for free-way or high-way testing. forget about going to the agent. Would not buy another CRV.
A nice compact car if doing a little bit of off road.good for new suburb under construction. when new the engine is smooth and quite. fuel economy is erratic
Engine noise humming on the M5 n M7.Gear Box playing up, after two years .agent couldnt do any thing. Honda Australia say refer to agent. Now warranty expire. All honda ower please check your diff oil. gear jumpy and shudder .

Great car, highly reccommend it! Great fun to drive and seems to go offroad where everyone says it can't. Motor is strong enough for most occasions and tows a trailer really well. Great weekend get away car, comfortable and quiet. Could use a bigger fuel tank for all round usability. Surprising amount of interior room. Turning circle is awesome, it almost seems to suck its bonnet in when it has too! Tyre choice is important with this car, want to use it offroad get a 4x4 tyre and you will be surprised where you will go. Never going to leave the...Read more
tarmac? Get a road tyre and cut a lot of road noise! Usual Honda build quality ( had a couple now ). Smooth, quiet 2.4 and smooth shifting auto with gradelogic seems to know which gear you need most of the time. Great handleing and comfortable ride. Heaps of interior room. Great highway economy ( best of 7.5 lt/100k ). Mini range rover look and driving position. Great head lights, good AC. Fantastic turning circle. Surprising off road abilty especially with the right tyres. Strong brakes. Good visability. Road noise on course chip, may be fixed with a more road biased tyre. Fuel economy around town can be high (11.5 ltr/100k) if you use all of what the vtec motor has to give. Ordinary radio with woeful speakers. Had to get a sensor in the auto replaced at 80k (the only thing to go wrong with it ) $300 including a service on the trans. Small fuel tankSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

My husband had a 98 CRV and was hit in the side on his way to work. He rolled 2 1/2 times and walked away with a few stitches in the leg. The damage was extensive and it was a write off. I immediately said we are getting another CRV, so we bought a new one last year. It is a very nice car, it runs well, there is plenty of space. The fuel economy is good and plenty of power. It tows a trailer full of camping gear and a boat with ease. For a car that does not look very big on the outside, there is plenty of room on the inside. We also bought a little Honda Jazz 6 mths ago and I think it is a great car too.
Great fuel economy.

I feel after 5 years and 120k I can give an honest opinion. When we bought this car new in 2003 I thought it was OK, my wife liked it more. But after 5 years, lots of city driving, lots of trips, towing and some off road stuff, I have been impressed. Have only had to replace brake pads ontop of normal servicing, not even replaced the battery. It all just works and works well.
Build quality, size, reliability.
Nothing signficant, fairly basic inside though but functional.

Best money spent
I was looking a used 4wd a year ago with a budget less than $15k. There were a few to choose from and I picked this baby because it is a Honda.
That was the best decision I have ever made. the odometer is now showing 150000km and had done a major service but no problems found.
Very joyful ride everyday and very roomy inside. The engine may not as powerful as others but it does the job without any drama.
fuel economy is of course not as good as my little Jazz (around 10L per 100km).
The reliability is the thing that I am looking in a car and it certainly gives me that.
Reliable, great space
Not as equipped as other makes

Love that car!!!
I drove into a couple of car yards looking for a 4WD with an area to sleep in, in the back. Finally found Honda Prestige, Melville, and way above normal customer service. This was a second hand car I was buying and the whole team got involved in the sale and handshakes etc. This car has everything except the kitchen sink. Maybe you could put one into the fold down TABLE that is set into the floor of the boot!!

Two minds
I have had this car from new, first ever Honda and was quite impressed. Very comfy and spacious. Love the height. Although my then 4 year old used to complain it was too high to get into! Comes with fold up table in boot however despite being active people have only bothered to use this a few times over the years. There is storage space under the table also but you always forget what's there as not that easily accessible. Would rather have the spare wheel there. Interior is set out to make the best use of space, could easily fit 5 adults in the...Read more
re. Easy to fold down back seats. My problem though started at 10,000k, car shuttering while driving Gears slipping on gear change and Advised diff oil change needed, even though it said on service book not required till 80,000 service. Anyway only way to fix it was change diff oil every 10,000 k! This car was always serviced on time through Honda. I had to fight to have it done under warranty at no cost, now out of warranty it's at my cost. My new mechanic has since investigated and this problem with the diff isn't rare. Changing the diff has not made a difference to the problem on talking to other mechanics who have dealt with this. Apart from diff problems, very reliable, not issues at services, good vision. Gearbox, diff, faulty. Shudder, slipping gears. Inherent problem.2 comments

We purchased a demo extra model 2006 CR-V and couldn't be happier. We narrowed our choice down to three types - CR-V, X trail and the RAV 4. We test drived each of the 2006 models and found that the CR-V stood out from the rest. Honda workmanship is top class and the car dives like a dream. There's plenty of room in the back for our two dogs and love the way we can roll the back seats forward to make more room in one simple step. Im now so impressed with Honda we are thinking of puchasing a Jazz!

A very good car in most aspects. The engine needs the manual transmission to benefit from the i-vtec technology. Lots of room for family and friends, and the ability to go exploring on weekends. Honda resale value is always good, but I'll be keeping mine for a while yet.
Honda quality and refinement. 2.4L i-vtec motor make strong power with potentially good fuel economy if you drive it nicely (8.5l/100km). With decent tyres it behaves like a much smaller vehicle. Off-road ability, no complaints.
A limited-slip differential should have been fitted, so the on demand four wheel drive works properly. Please next time Honda. Premium fuel only, or economy suffers.

I love taking this car to fishing and long trips compared to my daily modified corolla. With the exception of the tyre noise, the car is pretty quite when peddling along on the freeways. Spacious and the A/C is freezing cold during the 09 summer, and we still need to get the car tinted. Overall I'm pretty happy with the car, with the only exception being the 2.4L torqueless honda engine. Looking at the engine bay, I'm sure a 3L V6 would slot in nicely.
If the current model CRV had a V6 option, I would've traded in my CRV sports in an instant...Read more

i should have got the automatic as it is too quiet to hear when to shift and would have liked the sports package to get the fog lights as we need them here. big enough for a family with 3 big boys and all the gear! I have had it for 5 years and 210,000 kms and still going great but interior is a bit cheap
great luggage area, great back seat that can fit 3 in very comfortably as there is no middle hump in the seat or on the floor. sure footed AWD comfortable in front good sized engine power
would like it to have better mileage but is ok and the body panels are of a fairly light metal thickness

I've owned my 2002 CRV sports since new. Never miss a beat. Many owners have complained about the awful Bridgestone Dueler tyre. I couldn't believe the improvements in ride and handling after replacing them with Pirelli Scorpions STR. I ran a couple of tanks on Premium fuel and the rolling acceleration is a big improvement.

Overall I love my CRV. I've had a Honda before, and am grateful to go back to one. Plenty of space, storage and room for the pram, baby and all the incidentals that go with that. Bought the luxury version in April this year. It's built solid and one does not need to worry about made-in-Thailand quality. It does not quite drive like Euro but it handles better than my old camry which is saying a lot for a 4WD.

My CR-V RD7 shakes badly between 20km/h - 40km/h. When I accelerate to about 80km/h, the shaking goes off. What may be the possible cause?

Broken engine mounts? If you put the car in neutral and rev the engine do you feel the shaking? If yes, engine mounts may be the likely cause. If not then it could be front drive shafts.
