Great motor crap mower
Brought through bunnings in 2022. This would be the best engine I have ever owned. As for the mower it is too heavy to push, you can't cut the lawn low enough and as far as adjustment for height goes it is useless. Is either way too high and can't go low enough. Have brought a second hand victa so I can cut my lawn down low to remove the spongy grass. These mowers may be fine on very level smooth lawns but as I said useless on the average uneven block. They cut and mulch like a champ, start well plenty of power but the mower base lets them down big time

Very disappointed with this Honda mower
Was super excited getting this mower, was keen to get a good brand! Unfortunately I’m pretty disappointed with it and upset I sold my old Victa to buy it.
If grass is wet and a bit long it’s a mission to use, very heavy and hard to push. I find it sinks into my grass a lot because it’s so heavy.
Doesn’t catch all grass very well either... my reason for upgrade was a bigger catcher and deck size. Even mowing half over my last line it doesn’t catch well.
I bypassed the safety engine brake because it’s a pain! Also adjusted governor spring to...Read more
get more power because it constantly stalls! And worst of all the cutting height adjustments are too far between, can never get it right, why I let myself purchase a mower that sets heights from 4 different positions is beyond me!

Good mulching and cutting mower that deals with most situations
I've had mine for almost 4 years now and know it back to front. It mulches nicely and is up to cutting our tough, thick kikuyu couch even when it's been left to grow long. The deck is solid and the motor sufficiently strong.
It's always started first or second pull and the only gripe I have is with the height settings. Lowest is ok if you have a dead flat lawn bowls type of lawn. the next height setting up is about an inch too high for what I want, and I rarely need to go to anything higher.
All in all I'm pleased with it and glad to have spent a few hundred more over the cheaper brands out there.

Entry level commercial grade mower
This mower is awesome. Sturdy, powerful, reliable and well designed. I'm a professional gardener and this is a tool for the gardener who cuts a lot of domestic lawns and some commercial premises under 500 square meters (you'd need the walk behind powered wheel version after this). Most negative comments could addressed by reading the manual properly. Namely: 1. Really long grass should only be cut by 1/3 of it's length then left a week and repeat cut. This mower has proved powerful enough to cut long damp grass if it's at max cutting height. 2...Read more
. The wheels are independently adjustable rather than one lever to do all wheels. The manual suggests that if you've got a lawn covered with fallen leaves you Jack the front wheels up, leave the back ones down and mulch the leaves into the lawn. This couldn't be done if all wheels moved with one lever. Because this mower cuts up the grass really fine with the two blade system (like a bi-plane) it can really pack in the grass to the grass catcher. This allows more mowing between empties; very efficient. Lastly at first I wondered why the engine stopped every time the throttle lever was fully released (why no idle?). This is probably a safety feature or fuel saving, either way it starts back up first time with a quick pull on the starter, simple and effective. Change the oil and air filter as per the manual and the spark plug every 2 years and this excellent mower will last a lifetime.Purchased in February 2021 at Bunnings Warehouse for A$664.05.

Cutting height issue
Bought this mower as I trust the Honda brand, have only had it a few weeks but so far it starts first time, is reasonably quiet and it cuts the lawn nicely. I don't think the motor is under powered as some others have found. Everything is good except the cutting height adjustments, the lowest height is too low and the next height up is too high, I am going to have to try and add another height myself or see if I can lower the blade height slightly.

Excellent Mower!
I purchased this mower as a replacement for my old Honda push mower which still goes fine after 15 years but saw this model on sale and thought why not upgrade to a larger deck with self drive.
In short it is an AWESOME mower which gets my mowing done in what feels like half the time it used to, and absolutely no fatigue from pushing when used with some common sense. Personally I dont get most of the negative comments in these reviews. I have owned this mower for nearly 12 months and it has been absolutely faultless!

Worst mower I've ever used.
If your grass is perfectly dry and not very long then this mower will do an OK job - but so will any mower. If there is a hint of moisture or your grass is actually of a length that needs cutting then this mower will do a lousy job. The engine is underpowered and always seems to be struggling. It is difficult to push, the bars are at the wrong height and angle and it is heavy and cumbersome. It will not properly cut or catch any grass that is even slightly damp, but clogs and leaves more grass on the lawn than in the catcher. Mine had to go bac...Read more
k to the dealer within two weeks because it wouldn't run and it's needed its fuel system pulled apart and cleaned multiple times. My previous mower was a simple mulcher with a cheap Chinese motor, and it was ten times the mower that this bit of junk is.Purchased in November 2021 for A$729.00.

Wished I knew about product review before I bought this rubbish .
My honda 216 is a little over a year old, in mid February 2022 was the first time I'd struck the problem with the rear wheels locking up when pulled back. As with most things these days when ever i strike a problem I'm straight on the net, there were video clips and advice on how to fix the problem and I also discovered it mentioned in owners manual " how to adjust drive cable" .
I took machine to a honda dealer for a service and mentioned problem, while mower was at shop I rang honda and asked rep about problem .
Got mower back and was a...Read more

Average mower
Honda products as you would expect, are built with a certain quality. And there is no doubting the build quality of the HRR216K9VYUA is typical Honda. The starting is 10 out of 10 Brilliant....The self propelling system, does struggle at times with the wheels just spinning and the operator having to push and shove to get it moving. A more aggressive rear tyre pattern even studs could have been fitted. The catcher is of good capacity but does lack a grab handle to assist with emptying. The width of the cut is good, the twin blade system is a mys...Read more
tery to me but seems to cut the lawn ok. Honda for as long as I can remember have always struggles with wet or damp grass and this model is no different. I find I have to cut slowly and back out occasionally as the motor loses power when the going gets really tough. The blade disconnect system is a wonderful idea, but really loads the motor up when engaged. I even had the motor stall on the odd occasion. The biggest problem I have with this mower is the sheer weight, I bought this self propelled model as I thought it would make mowing easier with my dodgy back. Whilst going forward using the self propelled function is great, reversing and manouvering around trees to me is terrible. With an average back I struggle a little as a lot of effort is required to pull the mower backwards or change direction. So I rate this mower as a 6/10. Should be a 5 but the Honda build quality gives this product an extra point.Purchased in September 2021 at Honda Dealers for A$899.00.

Piece of crap
Ive bought honda products for many years, motorbikes whippersnippers generators etc ive read a few comments about this model I just wish I had reviewed the comments before I bought it. As ive always trusted honda to be a very good brand that has never let me down however I am very disappointed that Honda has produced a model like this. It does the most poor quality cut, hard to push, does not cut low enough and the front guard bites in the grass. d not recommend this mower to be suitable in my opinion. I am highly disappointed that Honda has produced such a piece of equipment as far as I am concerned in my opinion they should all be recalled as this model is giving Honda a bad name after many years of producing good products. Great mower
In 50 years if mowing i have just bought this self propelled HRR216VYUA. It is very user friendly. I only use the mulching setting and mainly on very thick buffalo grass. It cuts beautifully and I find it very easy to control and does cut backwards so I'm surprised to read so many complaints. Plenty of power and speed is very fast also. It even pulls me up slopping ground.
Highly recommend.

I enjoy doing my lawn now.
I have purchased other brands before and they got the job done but nothing like this does.
This mower gives a nice even cut without leaving the grass blotchy / patchy if you know what I mean. It also fills the catcher to nearly 90%, others are flat out reaching 70% before dropping clumps behind the mower. (Please note if you are going to mow wet grass EVERY mower will clog up, have to be a little doppy to mower long wet grass anyway ay?!?!).
Only negitive to this mower is the 4 separate height adjustments, just don't know why it wouldn'...Read more
t have 1 lever to adjust all four would be a lot easier. In the yard now I will only buy and use Honda items. They are all quieter (except the chainsaw attachment), less vibration and so easy to start. Little more expensive but well worth it. I have also purchased : 1. Best decision ever
I dont normally review, actually this is my first review but what a great product.
This mower is amazing from the start, its effortless single soft pull, easy start auto choke systems is so fluid its timeless..
Its 4 stroke 75db engine is so quiet the need for hearing protection is a thing of the past. (Please note this is my opinion only and not necessarily the same opinion expressly by Honda Australia)
There is also no playing with the idle control, it doesnt have one. The torque is so good it idles effortlessly through all grass h...Read more
eights without the need for an idle control and allows for the bow and stern to be adjusted independently, creating the perfect cut. Its unique twin blade mulch function does away with the need for a bin full of grass as it dices up grass finner than a sous chief and sprinkles these fine nitrogen rich grass particles back in to the lawn.Similar opinion? LOVE IT!
This is by far the best mower i've ever owned. I actually enjoy mowing my lawns now :D
PROS:
-Can and will cut ANYTHING!
-Self propelling is smooth and she goes like a dog shot in the behind!
-Will cut through long grass, sticks, and weeds with ease
-Large cutting deck means the job is done in half the time it used to take me
-Seems to run on fumes! I can mow our front and back lawns which takes me on average about an hour or more 2 or 3 times before needing to refuel it!
-The mulcher is really great, its so fine its like its not even there!
- The engine and shazzis is really non stick, so grass and even petrol should you spill any, just rinse right off very easily.

Bad choice
Bought a Honda thinking this would be my final mower, it was a pile of rubbish, after half an hour took it back and got my money back,
At the lowest cutting setting it barely makes a dent in my lawn, was told they are set up for American cutting conditions... well this is Australia. I can say I owned a Honda for 30 minutes. Pile of rubbish, what good is a mower if it won’t lower low enough to cut your lawn

Honda Was a Poor Choice!
Hard to pull backwards. After I got it the Smart Drive Control went out on it. The warranty covered getting it fixed, but would this happen again after the warranty has expired? Well it did, today, while I was mowing in 95 degree heat.
I had to finish the lawn pushing the mower and without the Drive Control it is heavy to push.
It states on the mower "easy start." It isn't! It has electric battery powered start, but it won't start from one mowing to another, say two or three days. So I bought a can of ether and I have to open the air intak...Read more

Don't buy not worth the over priced price tsg
Don't buy Honda. brought my new honda mower as I was over 2stroke mowers and family members raving about honda.first time I used my self propelled I couldn't pull it backwards and it kept stalling in 3inch tall grass. Went back to the store and they said I must be pushing it too fast (its self propelled) so Itried to slow down the speed nope still stalls. Then this week I hit something hard in the lawn and bent the crank shaft . The auto blade shut off doesn't work when you run over something. Thanks honda for making such rubbish mowers .never buy this mower

Pull cord to start will not work. It pulls out only a few inches and no further. Mower purchased from Bunnings only 6 weeks ago. I was trying to find a copy of the manual hoping this was a common problem with a simple answer but can find no information. Help please.
Allan M.asked
Hello,
I have a bent crankshaft from hitting a concrete Storm water inspection Cover.
Is this replaceable or is it not worth the dollars to have it fixed.
Any contact numbers would be great.
1 answer
It is replaceable, but could be very expensive. With a quick google I found a crankshaft at $31.00 USD in the US, and exactly the same Honda part number here was around $340 AUD! Not sure if it was exactly the one for your model. You need to look at the labels on your mower and get the engine number first to start tracing part numbers. Ring Honda if you're not sure. They can probably quote on the part too.
https://powerequipment.honda.com.au/contact.aspx
If you or someone you know can replace it, I'd look overseas and work out the landed cost vs what Honda might charge you for the part, and consider if you're up for the job. Keep in mind there might be other components that need replacing (unless you're sure you only have to replace the crankshaft).
I suspect labour cost could be pretty high, but you might be able to find a decent small engine mechanic who can source the part(s) at reasonable cost (maybe even secondhand) and give you an overall repair cost.
Alternatively an engine swap is relatively simple, so there might be a mechanic who has one they could swap.
Just some thoughts to go on. A bent crankshaft isn't the end of the world. IT'll all come down to $$$.
Good luck
