Phenomenal!
I bought this mower (a 2015 model) off a homeowner to replace my HRX217HYU recently. I have had a while to use it but not a lot of time, though I am happy I can give a good review on it now. Firstly it has a huge amount of power, but this was improved by moving the governor spring down 2 notches which let the engine rev harder. It is very slow compared to the HRX217 even on the fastest gear, but it is still a good walking pace which is nice. The blade brake is great because it means I can transport the mower between neighbouring houses without ...Read more
the blades running. The 70L catcher is a little smaller than the 88L HRX one but I am not too worried about that as I mulch most of my yards. the GXV160 with a 1.5L fuel tank is fantastic although as mentioned before it does perform better with the revs increased. One thing to be wary of is that it is very heavy (around 57KG) but it is self-propelled so it doesn't really matter that much and the deck is solid aluminium so it doesn't rust and is very strong. Overall a fantastic contractor's mower for a reasonable price.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The Rolls Royce of Self Propelled
It is now July 2016...
Almost time to replace my 2nd HRU216 mower.
IMHO Honda's are the Rolls Royce of push mowers. Definitely worth the price. Average usage = 4-6 hours/day, 5 days/ week, 8 months/year since purchasing in 2011...A total of between 640-960 work hours/year for the last 5 years. The Blade Brake is an absolute must for any serious lawn mower. This feature means the machine can be operated, safely, on any surface and lets it double as a carrier for full grass bags from site to vehicle. The 4 blade system (2 low lift/2 high lift)...Read more

ok
Bought new $1550.00. Powerful engine, starts easily and pretty robust.
Mulch attachment was $50 and doesn't even fit properly, really heavy although I'd rather heavy and lasts long than light and falls apart.
Only had it 2 months so time will tell if buying a honda self propelled was worth it.
power, easy start, tough
heavy, mulch attachment doesn't fit properly for $50,

Find out how Honda Buffalo Classic HRU216M1 compares to other Petrol Lawn Mowers
Know better, choose better.
Mower had significant problems after first cut
Terrible mower. Don't buy thisd mower just because it is a Honda thinking it will be the best on the market. There are major design floors which will have it back in the workshop and still not fixed. I strongly recommend you consider other brands e.g. John Deer, Rover etc.
Starts first time
1. Does not cut properly. Lawn cuttings jam in shute to the bag. 2. Second arm on handl to engage the blades breaks and is a know design fault. 3. Periodically have trouble shutting off the mower.

Excellent Machine
I purchased this machine nearly 12 months ago for use within my gardening business, and although it came with a significant price tag I have not regretted the outlay one bit.
If you are doing a large lawn, or simply a lot of them then this self propelled mower is a must. Very strong 5.5HP motor and a respectable 1.5litre fuel tank will see you through the day even if you get tired it will do the work as long as you steer.
Quality of cut is excellent and the suction is amazing, leaf litter is easily picked up. Three gears to choose from to...Read more
suit the length of grass, and I've done a couple jobs where any other mower would have called for a slasher but this machine powered through. Extra long handle is tall bloke friendly, like myself at 6.3", it saves you from hunching over like on older models. Although very sceptical at first, the blade safety system is actually very good. Mower will run without blades rotating, you engage and hold the bar in place on the handle along with the travel bar. Blades stop within half a second should you release the bar for whatever reason. This is also a great feature since it stops you getting covered in clippings during summer when leaning down to empty the very large 70litre catcher. Be warned, this is a very heavy machine. If you drive an alloy tray utility and carry your mower on there instead of a specialised trailer then buy ramps. I'm not sure of the exact weight but unless your are Mr Universe buy them, its very awkward to pick up. It will also leave tracks in damp soil during winter because of the weight.1 comment

Best mower I have ever owned, "no bull".
Bought this beast 14 Months ago after a lot of break downs and frustration with another well known brand with similar spec's(also brand new). The Honda is probably by far the most expensive of the walk behinds but in hindsight is worth every penny (cent) I appreciate properly designed and engineered equipment and this unit ticks all the boxes, I could write a novel about it but suffice to say when/if this one wears out it will be replaced with another Honda and I promise not to complain about the price.
Well designed and engineered

Good mower but the older HRU216D was a better mower.

Hi, my Honda HRU216 throttle cable is kinking at the control lever, and so the mower does not turn off. It seems that there is a design problem because the cable routing has been changed and cable is passed through a drilled hole through the plastic cover (as an after thought) rather than the original slot. So my question is, have Honda modified the cable? If so could you please give me the part number?

Hi Abe
I'm not connected to Honda and don't know the part number. Google might help. Probably best to go to a Honda mower dealer and ask. I have had problems with the cable not being stiff enough (or its sticking somewhere) thus not turning off the motor on my last mower. I had it repaired but it started doing it again intermittently about a month after. As I didn't have time to muck around I just pushed the lever forward that the cable is attached to on the engine to stop if it didn't stop as it should have.
Hi, thanks for your reply. As the length of throttle cable is too long (after re-routing by Honda), Honda has to come up with a stiffer and slightly shorter replacement throttle cable. Thats why I did not take the mower to the repair shop, because as you mentioned the replaced part did not work for long and never will. In short Honda had a problem and tried to fix it cheeply by drilling a hole in plastic cover rather than redesigning a new cable suitable for the new path.
Sounds like a Bodge job at the shop all 216 throttle cables should be same length

Is it possible to make the mower self-propelled without the blade spinning since sometimes I need to move the heavy mower across places like driveway on a slope where is no grass to mow?
2 answers
Not sure what model your mower is but all mine are self propelled, and stop spinning as soon as I let go of the bar . I believe one model came out without this function.
My machine is HRU216M2, there is a blade clutch lever and a drive clutch lever.
