My 2017 Hyundai Highlander has the same problem - lag especially when accelerating from slow speed / from start. Can get you into trouble if not alert to it.
Mentioned it to Hyundai dealer at service today and he said nothing they can do about it. I regret not asking for a more detailed elaboration of the problem.

Tucson in Toowoomba
Moved from Sydney to Toowoomba Qld to retire. Bought the Tucson for comfort and practicality. Has been just great! Smooth comfy and roomy inside. Dual clutch transmission is perfect for rural and semi-rural driving. Have noticed big city dwellers dont like this tranny....so go for the 2.0 auto for big city crawl-driving and diesel for long haul and towing. Best car I have driven.

Great if you never have to stop or take off!!
I bought this car for city driving and have since taken it back after 1000km due to scary near misses due to lagging on take off. I was told the car was fine. Upon pressing the accelerator pedal vehicle fails to accelerate from standstill creating a 1-2 second "pause" that is highly dangerous especially when entering traffic, highways, etc. This is clearly a problem that is documented however no recall has been granted for this model. It doesn't matter what road: City street or a highway. The vehicle hesitates and does not move when you need ...Read more
to! when the car does finally take hold, the engine revs high and pulses forward causing yet another disturbing and potentially dangerous condition for driver and others on the road. This is clearly a mechanical and/or software glitch that will eventually result in accidents and bodily harm. Note this condition is sometimes intermittent therefore creating a false sense of driver control since you never know when you will face lack of proper acceleration. There is also an dramatic increase in revs when traveling down a steep decline. I do this daily and it is at 50km or less and the revs raise to over 3000 whether I'm braking or with no acceleration. This also is normal according to Hyundai. Very disappointing for us a family. Long drives are beautiful with great creature comforts inside.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

problems with transmission
we bought this car for everyday around town driving. Since we have purchased the car there is a dangerous acceleration lag which occurs when the car has been stopped (for instance at traffic lights or intersection) when you accelerate nothing happens. Now this does not happen every time but at least once per day. We have mentioned the problem which we consider to be a safety issue to both the dealership service manager and the customer service line but we have been told that is just the way it is and there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. Otherwise we are happy with the car but are considering a change to another make of vehicle.

Beautiful car. Best features for price. Be careful of DCT if you’re not confident in a manual
I’ve had a new 2018 Tucson Highlander Petrol DTC Turbo for about 7 months now. I love the features of this car and it’s really ‘fun’ to drive. When researching I found Hyundai was really great for getting really great features for a great price. I wanted the bells and whistles such as heated seats, paroramic sunroof etc.
I got the dual clutch control (DCT) version of this car and have to say, I’m used to driving it now but if I had of known it was like driving a manual I probably would not have purchased. I have my manual licence but purchas...Read more
ed an auto car as I’ve had autos for the last 10 years and having my second child on the way I didn’t fancy stuffing around getting used to manual again. The car will roll if you try to accelerate or reverse out of an incline. It won’t hold like a normal auto. I found this incredibly nerve wracking when trying to get out of the steep incline at my workplace or out of parallel parking on a hill. You have to use two feet and balance the break and clutch like a manual. It’s different to drive all over. It can be jerky when moving through lower gears but is smooth when you build up some speed. Overall I’d say this is a much more “fun” car to drive in the DCT than your average auto but it’s also a learning curve so if you don’t want to stuff around learning it might not be for you. I can see Hyundai have announced the 2022 version of this car and they’ve taken the DCT away. I think it’s ended up being more trouble for them than it’s worth as I know others have had issue with the DCT as well.Purchased in February 2021 at John Hughes Car Sales for $43,000.00.

Great Car For A Great Price
A beautiful car to drive and with all the mod cons for a really reasonable price. I have not had any issues with it and the servicing is always cheap. I love the way the Bluetooth picks up from where you left off on your phone automatically, the auto tailgate function is great when you have your hands full with the shopping and interior lighting is a god send! Those in the back can have their lights on reading and I don't even know. I have been on some long trips and can tell you the lane guidance and the seat coolers make the drive so much mor...Read more
e comfortable. Everything about this car is well though out and uses common sense. Also I should add that I can see people mentioning the acceleration of the automatic - I am aware of this however if you do not have the ability to react to this or the dexterity to control it then you should not be on the road. It is a ridiculously easy car to drive and you need that power to get you moving at times when it's needed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Transmission really lets this car down.
My MY18 tuscon highlander has serious throttle and lag issue in low speeds. It doesn't register that you are applying the accelerator and just sits there. Eventually the car launches forward and you have to catch it before you slam into the person in front. Took it to Hyundai to investigate and told me that there was nothing wrong with the car. Advice given was that "I needed to learn how to drive it due to the dual clutch characteristics." So now I have a very frustrating car to drive. Hyundai has buried their head in the sand with this issue. Just have a look at the class action being undetaken in the US. It will take someone to pull out in traffic and stall before something will be done in Australia.

Gearbox will cause accidents
The Tucson Highlander, paid close to $50,000.00 for it 12 months ago. The only REAL problem with this car is a HUGE one. In peak hour traffic, 2 - 20km/hour, the car either does not respond when you accelerate slowly or it leaps forward dangerously trying to throw you into the vehicle ahead. Hyundai service respond with stating this cannot be fixed, due to the turbo engine’s dual clutch auto transmission and gearbox... it is totally dangerous and will cause an accident. I hate driving the car in traffic. Have done 7000km in 12 months. Will never look at Hyundai vehicles again... should have stuck with Mazda!!!

Serious problem with gears/transmission when accelerating have had a few near misses due to no power
Poor acceleration for a turbo needs to be rectified before serious accident occurs A problem with transmission.I have had a few near misses when vehicle did not respond on take off. After 3 days at dealers still awaiting Hyundai head office to reply. Not a good response time from head office. Dealer has tried to follow up but no reply on third day now coming on weekend. Not a happy customer.

Tuscon Highlander AWD MY18 - 1.6 Turbo acceleration problem
Second Review
20,000km service (3rd) Still no change with dual clutch transmission (intermittent) lag from a stationary position issue. After the 2nd 10,000km service ($290) I brought this to the attention of staff at TYNAN motors prior to service and the response on collection was that no problem could be found?? Surprise!! After another 10,000km with no change at all to the lag I requested a test drive with a TYNAN mechanic who occupied the passenger's seat acknowledged the lag but again on pick up no issues???? The counter staff member maki...Read more

Best small SUV available
Love almost everything about this car. We chose the highlander petrol turbo model as the fuel consumption seemed more reasonable than the other models. Safety and comfort features with the top end model are really worth the extra money!
There are alot of reasons why this is a great car but this really is an 'individual needs' thing and this car ticked all the boxes for my family. For me my favourite things are:
Sunroof keeps the kids entertained (and therefore quiet)
Cross traffic alert- great when reversing out of a car space in a shopp...Read more

My first Hyundai, happy so far!
After driving an ix35 rental earlier in the year I vowed not to look at Hyundai's when upgrading our Mazda recently. A friend recommended we look at the new Tucson and I have been very impressed. The handling is good, heaps of room and build quality is good. Price is right for the quality and the extended warranty gives me a lot of comfort. Obviously not as premium in feel as some of the luxury brands but again for this price I think value is very good.

Great car but a few glitches
Wasn't sure about this when looking for a new SUV as I had 10 years great service from my Nissan XTrail.
However once I drive it I was convinced of its capability for my general use . I do not tow anything so an i deal car for me. It has great features and is very high spec for the money. However it does use a new generation of duel clutch in place of the standard auto transmission. This gives it great power combined with the turbo and seemed to be a good match. After 4500 Km I started to have some issues with power loss at very awkward times ...Read more

Great Car
I bought the top of the range Hyundai Highlander. It has lots of extras such as sun roof and driving assist. It drives very well and is powerful. My only criticism of the drive is that it is very slow and hesitant to move from a standing position such as at an intersection. This can make it a bit scary crossing when you think you have time and space, you really don't! I had this checked out at the first service and was told that's the way it is!
The interior is very spacious and I love the electronic adjustments for seating, heating and cooli...Read more

MY17 Tucson Steering problems
Lovely car all round but have a major problem with the steering veering to the left. Not sure if its only confined to the Highlander built in the Czech Republic but appears this could be the case. Hyundai are trying to fix this problem which maybe could involve a lot of cars but keeping it very close to their chest. Car has been at the dealer for a week and still no solution after trying several tweeks from Hyundai. Make sure you road test your Highlander before taking delivery! Car has only done 3000 kms.

Hyundai Service Myaree
IS HYUNDAI NUTS?
I haven't yet had a service yet that I have not had to go back a second time to correct faults caused by the service itself. One of note is the new Tuscon apparently 'learns' your driving habits over time - but the service techs reset the onboard computer to factory settings each time and it all goes to crap again. So you start out again with the vehicle in 'learner mode' lugging and chugging, then it learns your driving habits and when you take it in for a service it's all reset to factory settings again and the whole cycle r...Read more
epeats itself. The point - leave the settings as the driver left them - that is a major selling point of the vehicle, it learns. This item is still critical and obfuscated by every service agent who sets up the six-monthly service. My Tuscon Highlander Turbo 1600 HAD to be given a 37,500k service and it has only done 8,376k. Hyundai can't figure out how to use duration (every six months). So my log book says that the vehicle has done 37, 500 k's and the odometer says the vehicle has done 8,376 k's. What will happen when the vehicle is sold? Will it register as having done 37,500k or 8,376 k's? This is not an intelligence test Hyundai. If it HAS to be serviced every six months to keep the warranty then keep it simple, log the real k's on the odometer. Hyundai will NOT answer this question. The point - the odometer and the book service must be aligned to match the odometer. Anything less is fraudulent and deceptive.Purchased in April 2021.

I might be going crazy but Im pretty sure my Highlander (2017) version has the idle stop and go feature however when I went to drive the car today it was running a little weird and I realised that the feature wasnt engaging. So I have two questions 1) does it have the feature ( or Im losing my mind) 2) if it does is there a button I may have accidentally pressed to turn it off or do I need to speak to my dealer? Thanks

Good car spacious only problem is when temperature outside is around 30 degrees if I have been driving for a hour or more when I put my foot on accelerator there is a squeaking noise does not do it all the time only now and than car is only 6 months old anyone have this problem
1 answer
Take a video of the problem then take the car back to Hyundai. They are really good with fixing any issues. Especially if you have evidence. My Audio unit went crazy ( radio channels kept randomly changing ) so they did a software update and that fixed the issue and it was all covered under warranty
