Hi,
I have a deck in merbau deck which is 15 years old. I have maintained it with Cabots Aquadeck but in the process it has lost its natural grain look and appears flat brown in colour like its been painted. I stripped it back to its original grain using Intergrain timber stripper, and plan to use UltraPrep Timber Cleaner as well. Which is best to use Intergrain NTO or the Ultradeck Timber Oil? I note on the description, the Ultradeck is termed "water based coating". This concerns me as I don't want to go back to maintaining the deck with a layer upon layer coating which eventually covers the natural grain. What are the advantages of each?

Hi John,

I would definitely NEVER use NTO. Not ever. Worst decking oil ever. My deck was ruined by it in 4 months. Almost completely black. I have previously used Cabots Aquadeck and Intergrain Ultradeck elsewhere. Very similar products, ultradeck being slightly darker stain. They BOTH are acrylic and will build up and obscure the grain, so I am not a real fan (for the same reason as you).
If you love timber, use Cutek. This is real oil. you can choose the stain you add, to suit your taste (have to stain it to prevent greying) and it does take a couple of days to dry, BUT OMG, the result is spectacular. Grain is totally preserved, lovely and transparent and super water repellant. It looks to be much more expensive than the others, until you add in the coverage rates. You will cover about 2x the surface area per litre with this product, so it actually works out cheaper. I have done 60sqm of deck with this after stripping the NTO off and I couldn't be happier.
You will have to get rid of all the Aquadeck before using this or the result will be compromised. I found that fairly dilute Caustic soda (be careful with this stuff, wear eye protection and don't get it on your skin). Otherwise a light sand.
The data says that it will last 12 months between coats which is excellent. It is now my go to product, and I live and love timber....everywhere.
Steve

ps The Cutek extreme is the newer version. Slightly more expensive but is supposed to last longer, so probably worth the premium. Just remember the coverage is so good that the price is actually cheaper per sqm than the other rubbish. Hope that helps.

Hi. I have a new pine timber outdoor stairs. I am sealing the steps and deciding on what kind of oil to use afterwards. Is there a good timber oil you’d recommend to use on pine and how safe is to use on outdoor stairs. I am asking because I have previously used Nature’s Timber oil on hardwood and does look good but takes long to dry. I have read about wiping out the excess after 30 m of application but I have to say I didn’t do it. How do I wipe out the excess?. With Turpentine and a cloth?. Please advice.

Hi Silvia, to wipe off the excess of NTO we would recommend using a cloth or towel, no need to use turpentine. Wiping the excess is required and will drastically reduce the amount of time required to dry. To ensure you will be happy with the colour result, we recommend coating a test area first or an off cut of the timber as the colour of the timber does impact the overall colour result. If the steps are exposed to weather and likely to get wet, we would recommend using UltraDeck Slip Resistant either in natural or getting it tinted to the colour of your choice. We coated our deck with Intergrain Timber Oil. After giving it 3 coats we find that the timber is still looking dull. Is there a product that we can apply over it to give it a nice shine?

We used Natures Timber Oil on smooth finish decoratve exterior Cedar batons.
Applied 3 coats as per spec.
3rd coat looked patchy due to light factors and more than likely average application technique (applied left to right across top floor of the scaffold, then applied through the middle of the scaffold, then finally applied along bottom level) against my advice of coating 3-4 boards at a time from top to bottom, and repeated left to right.
Subsequently we got, just as I had warned them, stop start lines across the top, and also middle.
1 side is sun light sensitive, and definitely needed a recoat.
A 4th coat was applied,(previous coats were 100% dry, coated 2months earlier) but still remains shiny and tacky. It has been tacky for approx 2 months now.
This side gets full sun for the 1st half of the day.
The building is on Tamaki Dr, Auck, 50mt from the sea.
Will it ever dry out?
If not, what can we do,as the client is worried people will lean on it etc.
Many thanks,
Ken.

If it’s Decking oil, best to use Cutek CD 50. Oil take long to fully dry so dont worry as first time application takes longer as oil must penetrate through Machine Glaze on timber. Best to let it dry by itself as it’s penetrating through timber.

Hi Ken,

We would suggest giving the surface a hard wipe down with Mineral Turpentine as a starting point to get rid of the residual tackiness. If this is not successful it would be a good idea to call our technical team on 1800 630 285 to get more detailed advice on your situation.

Does a stain in the Nature's Timber Oil provide any UV protection above using natural colour (ie no added pigment) . I'm undecided about using a clear oil or a jarrah coloured oil on my jarrah deck.

Hi I've been reading all the comments, I wonder what you mean when you say wipe off the excess oil after the 30 mins
How is that possible when the deck is still absorbing the oil and tacky?

Hi Kev. Nature's Timber Oil is a penetrating oil so will get into the timber fibres. The excess on the timber needs to be removed after 30 minutes Ensure that excess is wiped before the coating gets tacky. If you have any further questions, please call us on 1800 630 285.

I am going to make 30sqm deck with Auswest Karri deck wood sold at Bunnings. Can I ask what color tone (or stain) I use with Intergrain Natures Timber oil (non water base) to keep Karri's original color?
Brig

Garth M.Intergrain

Hi Brig,
All decking oils are pigmented to protect from UV. For Karri timber, Nature's Timber Oil in Natural colour would bring richness to your timber, without darkening the colour too much. The Merbau colour of NTO might darken the timber more that you'd like, as it has slightly more brown pigment in it than the Natural does.

Please call us if you'd like to discuss on 1800 630 285.

Don't forget that all new bare timber needs to be weathered for between 4 and 6 weeks to leech tannins and oils from the surface. This process can be skipped by using Intergrain PowerPrep followed by Intergrain Reviva. If you decide to weather your timber naturally, make sure you prepare the timber with Intergrain Reviva prior to applying NTO.

Will K.Intergrain

Hi Ianingy,
Thanks for your question.

Intergrain UltraDeck will never flake, blister or peel, and will protect your timber from the elements. Nature's Timber Oil will do the same, it just won't last as long, as it is oil based.

We would suggest you go into your nearest Intergrain retailer and check out the information wall in the woodcare aisle. You'll see all the different finishes that are suitable for exterior timber.

All our coatings will help to protect and beautify your timber, and with proper maintenance, help them to last years and years.

Please call us on 1800 630 285 if you'd like to discuss further.

Hi
I'm using Nature’s Timber Oil on my merbau deck. I've done the first yesterday and today I find that it is much darker than I expected.
Is this normal and will simply go even darker after a second or third coat?
I have not had time to to the second coat but should do within the next few days. Will a few days between coats cause any issues?

Regards Jim

Will K.Intergrain

Hi Jim,
Oil Based decking oils will darken the timber, as they add warmth to the timber, as well as the pigment in the can. Additional coats will look darker, due to the additional pigment you're adding to the surface of your deck.

There is no problem waiting between coats. Nature's Timber Oil penetrates deep into the timber, and there is no issue allowing your coats to soak in over a few days. Please do ensure that the deck is totally dry and clean before applying your second coat.

Make sure you wipe off your second coat after about 30 mins with a clean applicator.

Woody

Woodyasked

Can I apply Intergrain's Ultradeck over a coat of Intergrain's Timber oil?

1 answer
Intergrain
Will K.Intergrain

Hi Woody,
Provided your deck is beading water, you should be OK to overcoat with UltraDeck.
Thoroughly scrub the deck with Reviva, allow to dry and perform a water bead test. Splash some water onto the deck, if it's soaking into the timber, you should be OK to apply UltraDeck following label instructions.

If the water is beading on the surface, it means there is still oil on your deck In this case, further weathering, sanding or stipping will be required. While both are decking 'oils' - one is oil based and the other is water based. Mixing these two coatings on the one surface will result in premature failure of UltraDeck.

Hello,
We are having a new deck put down at the moment, and will have Kapur as the deck surface. What would you recommend as the best finish?
The deck will be subject to quite a bit of sun over the summer months. Considering putting upa shade sail to cover most of the deck, but due to the shape, will not cover 100% of it.

Cheers

Will K.Intergrain

Hi Bretto,

Thanks for your question.

Kapur is a beautiful timber, that is slightly more lightly coloured than Merbau. It is extremely popular in SA.

We recommend Intergrain UltraDeck Natural for Kapur. UltraDeck is lightly pigmented to compliment the natural colours of the timber, but also contains enough pigment to protect the timber from the Sun's harsh ultra violet light. Make sure you test on a small area to make sure you're happy with the colour first.

You'll need to weather your timber for 4-6 weeks, running the hose over it a couple of times a week if you're not getting much rain. After this weathering process, you'll need to clean the timber with Reviva to bring it back to its original beauty before finishing with UltraDeck.

You can skip the weathering process and coat your deck in time for Summer by using PowerPrep and then Reviva, you can read more about this system here: http://www.intergrain.com.au/product-selector/product-detail/intergrain-powerprep
