Intergrain Ultraclear Exterior and Bamboo Ply
We have done many real time tests of exterior finishes that we would be happy to recommend to customers for use in wet conditions, or exposure to the weather, applied to our bamboo ply. Intergrain Ultraclear Exterior really does the trick.
Purchased in March 2021.

Disappointing Outcome
I bought the product to coat 2 outdoor wooden benches at our coastal home. I wanted something marine grade due to the harsh weather. The can says application is only for Windows, Doors and exterior trims. Since the benches are rarely used (it is not a bench at a railway station) I thought the product was appropriate. I gave 3 coats in Feb. By this month, there are patches on the bench where the UltraClear has weathered away to the bare timber. I contacted Dulux and was asked to provide photos. Dulux came back to tell me that the durabili...Read more
ty issue is due to the product being used on furniture. It is meant for Windows, Doors and Trims. I understand this but surely durability is a function of long term use not for wooden benches prepared and coated 3 months before. The weathered areas are all over the bench not just in one spot. I believe this is a defective product.2 comments
Thank you for you note which is greatly appreciated. In brief, I have the following situation:

This isn't perfect. Can live without it.
To repair any areas of wear, I have had to fully sand the entire door in question- despite the can instructions stipulating a light sand of only weather damaged areas. The tones of the new and old weren’t matching and looked bloody awful.
On querying this with a Dulux representative, he confirmed that the instructions are in fact wrong and that old and new applications will never match because of fading. This makes sense, but it’d be nice if they put it on the can. On querying why the interior side of the door would fade so much in 12 month...Read more
s, he contested that I shouldn’t even be using Exterior Intergrain indoors as indoor conditions would compromise its curing. Again confusing, as it’s written on the can that Exterior indoors in fine. Anyhow, the product’s o.k – but I recommend Cutek Extreme. It’s easier to maintain and more water resistant. You won’t keep that pretty blonde finish though.

For best protection of the timber, we recommend regular maintenance and recoating the timber before the coating deteriorates to the point where the timber itself is exposed to the light. Bei... Read more
Yes. Absolutely.
A decking oil would allow a certain amount of brevity to maintenance, hence my recommendation of an Oil coating in my original review.

It works if you mix it properly.
I have found this product to be a cost effective water based solution to protecting mertanti bifolding doors and Windows. I have found 2-3 coats to be adequate to protect the new timber from the elements, both rain and UV light. It seems to have protected the timber well. The only issue I have with this product is the formulation of the paint. Unless you really carefully mix the product, there is a brown sticky residue at the bottom of the tin. This residue will resettle the next day after use and you will need to carefully ensure you use a fla...Read more
t mixer to get it back into 'solution'. This could be a reason why people have had varying results with this product. Suggest that the manufacturer works on a new formulation that does not require so much work before each use, as I found that to be a major drawback to using this product. (I used several 4l cans of this product from different stores, and I assume the problem is not just in one batch of product).1 comment

Is this as good as it gets?
3 coats of Integrain exterior window paint 18 months ago on new vic ash windows -merbeau sills peeling after about 12 months and some down to the wood now. Sure, our spot is windy and exposed in bad weather but surely this is not as good as it gets.

Hi Hayden,
Intergrain UltraClear does require a 12 monthly maintenance inspections, as stated on the can. All exterior clear varnishes/finishes will require regular maintenance coats, and many will benefit from 6 monthly maintenance inspections. ... Read more
For the best protection of the timber, and ease of maintenance is ensured if UltraClear Exterior is recoated before deterioration of the coating and timber underneath occurs. The first indication of the need for recoating will be observed as patchiness or thinning of the surface coating on edges and areas where insufficient product has been applied. If small areas of timber have weathered through to cause deterioration of the coating, sand affected areas back to bare timber, remove sanding dust and recoat. To recoat UltraClear Exterior which is in good condition, lightly sand, remove sanding dust and apply one coat of UltraClear Exterior. If you are after a significantly longer lasting finish try Intergrain NaturalStain Merbau (see here for further details http://www.intergrain.com.au/consumer/products/exterior/product-details/2736). Other timber colours are also available. NaturalStain sample pots are available to test the finish to ensure that you are satisfied with the look before proceeding with your project and the UltraClear Exterior will need to be completely removed from the timber first (please see the can for details). It dosnt work
We had brand new cedar windows & painted 4 coats, it didn't last 3 months in winter, this product was highly recommended by a Paintright store, after going back to the store the after sales service was poor, both the store & manufacturer didn't want to know about us. this product doesn't work outdoors. I now have hours of work to sand back windows & doors & start again

Don't use on Exposed wood
We had new cedar windows coated with this - 3 coats - in full sun was hopeless - looked weathered within 2 months and was pealing off after summer. This product is of no use in full sun. Had to have all wood sanded back to bare and have used Sikkens system (as recommended by every trades person who saw the original mess!)
Can't stand up to Australian sun

Questions & Answers
rodasked
can inter grain ultra clear be used to coat (paint on) an external merbau decking. any other clear finish be suitable. thanks
2 answers
Hi Rod, I think you should look at the Intergrain exterior decking product The Intergrain Exterior says it;'s not for use on 'broad-wall' areas (large areas) and that the decking product is what you need. See https://www.intergrain.com.au/product/intergrain-ultradeck-timber-oil
Ultradeck is the product to use in your application.

Can I use it on Marble
1 answer
Definitely not. It is meant for wood products. I am sure Bunnings or specialty places will have appropriate products for marble.

Do I need to use Integrain ultra primer before ultra clear on raw timber doors ?

My experience with Intergrain UltraClear Exterior has not been good. I wrote a review on this. I now only use Intergrain UltraDeck for all my exterior timber finishes and have been doing so for a number of years. Save yourself some money by just using this one product.
Hi KoolDawg. Thanks for your reply. We are replacing timber doors only on a job and the frame along with all other joinery have been coated with UltraClear so we have been instructed to use the same product.
Erin P.Intergrain
Hi Brian, there is no need to use Intergrain UltraPrimer before UltraClear, just sand timber to a uniform, smooth surface. Ensure the timber is dry and free from all dirt, dust, wax and oils. If you are working with an oily timber, clean with methylated spirits and allow to dry. The Intergrain Team

ecommend this for furniture is that it will generally be sitting in the sun all day long, as opposed to a window or door which might get the sun for an hour at the most per day. For exterior furniture, your best bet is to use a decking oil or something that has pigment in it. The pigmentation allows the coating to start up to harsh conditions, and would be perfect for your outside furniture.
