Let me start by saying, I'm not new to the Jamie Oliver Tefal line. The Jamie and Tefal partnership is undoubtedly one of the more prominent and long standing ones - synonymous with quality. I actually still have a very similar set which I purchased about 10 years ago. Although one frying pan died (coating), the saucepans and other non-stick pans are still in daily use. Kit contents are 1 x 1.5l saucepan 1 x 5.2l Stewpot 1 x 38cm Shallow Pan (non-stick) 2 x Frying Pans (non-stick; in 26 & 28cm sizes) From the outset, this is a really well thought out combination if you're looking at replacing your old pots and pans or just starting out. Sure there will be things that you may want as extras, but overall this kind of kit will cater for 80-90% of your cooking needs. If there's any criticism to be found in terms of kit inclusions, it's perhaps that the two frying pans are very similar in size (only a 2cm difference). You don't need a larger pan because you get that in the very large 38cm shallow pan, but a smaller pan would perhaps offered more versatility. None the less, even if you have a large 5 burner hob, you still have more than enough to cook up a feast. Three of the pans also come with lids and the only other criticism here is that due to the mixed sizes, you don't actually have a lid which fits either frying pan.

Beautiful set but could be improved
I had high expectations of this five piece set bearing the name of the famous chef Jamie Oliver.
Just removing the set from its attractive and secure packaging was a pleasant experience. I wonder how much creative thought must have been given just to design the packaging itself. Not sure why it’s called the stainless steel range.
When I found out I would be reviewing these saucepans I kinda thought they are gonna be wasted on me because I already have a full set of stainless steel saucepans that I love and they were the last thing I would need. m tasked with doing a review about them and that’s what I’ll do. Firstly, after unpacking them and washing them in warm soapy water, I wiped the stainless steel stockpot and small saucepan down with some vegetable oil as per the instructions, I kept getting black stuff on the paper towel, I rewashed them, same thing, put them in the dishwasher on full cycle, dried them, wiped them with vegetable oil and still got lots of black stuff, so I messaged my Metalurgist son in law who works in a nickel mine (base metal of stainless steel) and asked him what I should do about it. He said it was a coating they used to transport the saucepans and it should wipe off easily. I explained what I had done and he was a little perplexed, he asked me what grade of s/steel they were and where they were made, I said they were made in China and told him the numbers on the bottom of the pans, he said the composition of the pans was very inferior for the price they were charging, but it explained the black coating. He said Chinese s/steel is inferior to Australian s/steel as they do not use a good grade of nickel, but it should still rub off easier than what I was doing. So I filled the stockpot up with warm soapy water and brought it to boil, boiled it for about 3-4 minutes, rinsed it, dried it, tried it again and still black stuff. My son in law assured me that it should be ok to use even with my obsessiveness over cleaning them, so I made some soup in the pot and put it back in the dishwasher. I didn’t do the vegetable oil thing again, cause I really don’t wanna know. The soup tasted fine. However, reaching across my gas hob, I brushed up against the lid of the saucepan and gave myself second degree burns on the inside of my arm as it was ridiculously hot, the handles get hot too, you need gloves for them. I cooked some Gardein (fake chicken breast) in the Teflon frying pan which takes one minute each side, add a tablespoon or two of water and cook again for two minutes on low. I had it on the lowest flame I could. I have an island bench with my gas hob in the middle of it and an overhead range hood coming down from the ceiling, I had this turned on as I was cooking. My smoke detector is about 10-12 metres away and the smoke from the frying pan set the detector off. It just wouldn’t stop smouldering, even for this short amount of cooking time on the lowest setting, so I turned it off and changed pans. I then gave up on these saucepans. I’m sorry Tefal/Jamie, maybe I’m just not the right person for such big heavy saucepans cause I’m not very big and they weigh over two kilos each. To me the whole set is counter intuitive, why put a small saucepan in with a large casserole, stock pot and two frying pans, why have a casserole pot with Teflon and call it s/steel? I have a set of Royal Doulton s/steel saucepans, they are two small, two medium and one large saucepan, what I would expect in a saucepan set. I asked my daughter if she would use them as she has two children and she does occasionally cook large meals (they are vegetarian as well though) and she said she would probably use the Teflon casserole and maybe the frying pan, but she thought they were far too heavy as well. Going potty over these
My old Ikea pots and stoneware frying pans have been replaced by the Jamie Oliver Stainless Steel Induction Set by Tefal. The kit consists of 2 frying pans (26cm & 28 cm), a 16cm saucepan with lid, a 24cm stew pot with lid and a 30cm shallow pan with lid. Taking these out of the box, it was immediately apparent that they are extremely well made and excellent quality. screws, so they will never come loose or need replacement. The 2 frying pans as well as the shallow pan have a titanium non-stick Teflon style coating, with the Tefal “Thermo-Spot” in the centre. The Thermo spot turns solid red when the pan has reached the right temperature for cooking. So, pots are pots right? WRONG….these pots are clearly better than what I had. They heat up quicker, hold heat better, which lets me cook at lower settings and are super easy to clean. The titanium non stick finish is excellent. Food just slips out of the pan, and anything stuck to the surface mostly just rinses off. Being titanium, Tefal state that metal utensils can be used – EXCEPT Knives. I have an induction cook top (awesome, would never go back to gas) and these are designed for induction, but would work equally well on gas or electric cook tops. All the pots and pans can be placed in the oven, with some restrictions on time and temperature. I think the set would have been better with a 24cm frying pan than a 26cm. 26 is really too close to 28 and there really is not much difference between the two, also the lid of the 24cm stew pot would fit a 24cm frying pan. Similarly, I think the 16cm saucepan is a little small and it would be better if this was 18 or 20cm. The jump from 16cm to 24cm is quite significant. This is certainly not a deal breaker, just an observation. The stew pot is a good size for cooking pasta and rice and any wet dishes such soups or casseroles. The shallow pan is great for pasta sauces, lamb shanks and anything you may wish to brown first and then slow cook. PROS: quality, non-stick surface is fantastic, ovenable, metal riveted handles, fast heat up and cooking times, the saucepan and stew pot both have measuring graduations on the side, which is great and the thermos spot works well. Cons: The frying pans are a little on the heavy side, particularly with food in them. They may be difficult to lift for elderly people or people with wrist or arthritic problems. A smaller frying pan would also help in this regard. Overall a fantastic set of pots and pans that cook really well, everything from slow cooked lamb shanks to medium rare steaks. Thoroughly recommend, I am amazed just how much better to cook with they are than my previous set.1 comment

k top and can state these heat up really quickly. Perhaps, since they are designed for induction, they actually perform better on this type of cook top. My wife loves the 30cm shallow pan for slow cooking in the oven, and has given up using the old electric crock pot. Non stick surfaces are still like new. Still extremely impressed and would recommend. Robbo59
