Hi- am looking for a good 2nd hand Penguin Outback, but before that have 3 questions re installing a tow bar on our Mitsubishi Triton. 1) been quoted for a Hayman Reese heavy duty tow bar which sounds over spec’d for the Penguin - any alternatives? 2) How many sockets pins, and are they round or square? 3) can one connect solar panels to the Penguin socket to charge the battery once the vehicle is detached?

The only positive in putting on a hyman Reese is that in the future if you want to upgrade to a bigger van the tow hitch would be already done. otherwise I cannot see why a heavy duty tow bar would be required.

Hi,
It tows really well, I have a 2016 Hilux.
Have not taken it out yet, as I am still awaiting for Jayco to have it fixed.....
CaravanLand did nothing, they were poor, I went to KEN Peachy, he has been outstanding, came to my house and viewed, has done all the work with Jayco. He even found another defect, that we did not observe. Now waiting for the bench top to be made and couriered. Then all will be fixed.
Jayco just state, it is under warranty and it will be fixed, though it should have been right to start with....
Pity KEN Peachy does not sell caravans.....

Thanks. I am unsure whether because it is a new model, so jayco is struggling with quality control on the initial rush of builds.
Is the roof timber with a flexible fiber glass shell on top or the same composite material as the side wall? The cause of collapse of the roof defects, did Ken explained?
Thinking about it for this price range, only coromal rvs? I have talked to zone rv owner in a caravan park. They have kinked air hose in the suspension which affects towing when the caravan was delivered.
Please update your thoughts after you take it out for a trip and especially how well does it handle corrugation and does the cupboards and carpentry hang together.
Thanks for sharing.

Can you please tell me what work is carried out when you take your outback journey 19’6-2 in for it first service?
For example are the wheel bearings serviced ?
Plumbing and gas checked for correct working order ?
Fridge & aircon, lights and power all checked to be running correctly ?
What do we need to look out for as the van has hardly been used?

It's all listed in your owner's handbook Gerry.

Thank you Tony

I had a couple of jayco owners tell me the wheel bearing service was not included and was extra.
This seemed strange as these are among the most used parts on a caravan or trailer.

how much trouble are they having with the remote awning and can you attach an annexe easily to it?

Unable to comment on this as we have a pull-out awning, however the awning leaks where it is attached to the roof when it rains.

I can say one thing only
about Jayco, and that is BUYER BEWARE!!!!! We purchased a brand new Jayco Journey in 2014, and had to have the whole roof replaced due to leakage problems in 2015, which they did as it was under warranty (by the way their warranty is almost worthless, as they give you 1 year only and you might only use your van for 1 to 3. months in that year.) we are still having on going problems that Jayco refuse to fix now, but when they replaced the roof they attached the awning crooked (it being longer on one side than the other),therefore it never rolls up evenly. They say that it is wear & tear, how can that make one side longer than the other?. The new roof (pop top) does not settle down properly & we have had to have it re-seated twice (once by a Jayco Service Centre ( not done properly)& once by an independent caravan repairer.
We also have 2 stress cracks in the grey panels at the rear of the van again “wear & tear” apparently, but the van has always been kept under cover & has never been off a bitumen road. We have also had numerous other small problems that we have fixed ourselves, changing all their tyres for light truck tyres as we were informed that the ones that were on the van were inferior, they wore on one side after very limited use/time
So as I say think very carefully before you purchase a Jayco, of any sort, we are sorry that we have ours but can’t afford to change it either, so we are stuck with it, so as I said earlier “BUY BEWARE”

Owner of a new Jayco journey outback. Electric awning is great so far. Have few minor issues but u get them with any van on the first trip. Tows very well, however, dust came in around door on 300km of dirt road. Just adjusted the door catches and it all good, cheers

What can a Jayco journey outback do that a tourer can’t? We will get the gas bayonet, the bike rack... neither can go off road, and it’s 300kg lighter, so what’s the limitation?

Ground clearance, solar, wading depth, tougher suspension, more travel, all round better van, much nicer looking etc etc.

Hello! We are just about to buy a Jayco Pop top Journey and will be towing with our 2007 Pajero. Has anyone else got the same set up and can give feedback on how it tows? Thanks so much. Also we wanted to move the spare wheel to the rear but Jayco said we can’t due to wanting a cycle carrier. Has anyone else got around this? Thanks

Hello .. we have the same setup and the ride with the Pajero (2011) Diesel is wonderful. .. wouldn't change it for the world. The only changes we have made are. A Steinbaur Diesel chip, a 3 inch exhaust and a larger fuel tank from ARB. The tank capacity was increased by 40 litres ... from the standard 88 to 128 litres and is very convenient when there are no filling stations for around 250-350 klms like the centre of Oz. We have a 2018 Journey that had a wheel carrier in the front under the "A" frame and one at the back. I cut off part of the front section of the carrier to install a toolbox on top of the "A" frame and travel with the one spare tyre at the back. I am sure you can fix the cycle carrier at the tow bar and move the spare tyre to the back. Regards. Nevillle.

Do you know what your maximum tow weight is on your Pajero Neville? Ours is 2.5t apparently and they changed to 3t in later models. Thanks

Tony O'

Have a 19.6.2 Journey, 2018 picked up new October 2018. We may be the unlucky ones but many problems. Complete new front fibreglass panel (lower half) cracked on first 500km trip. Replaced under warranty. Brand new Thetford fridg installed after six months and not many kms, as original would not work on either of the three systems. Done under warranty but again without a van. Not convenient as we live 200km from the service center in Adelaide. Whilst undergoing first service, asked to be done in July (7 months and approx. 2500kms) whilst it was down there, we were informed that a problem with the gas hot water system had been identified and it was not to be used until exhaustive investigations had been carried out by the AGI, the OTR and experts.
Possibly unsafe and gas line capped until investigation completed. That was July and we're still waiting. OK to use on 240v but that defeats the purpose of purchasing an off-grid ensuite.
Had other minor issues fixed under warranty but they're to be expected with a new model. Very inconvenient though as the van has to be taken back to Adelaide each time and the waiting time is very lengthy. We may just be the unlucky ones but ask about the safety of the Suburban Gas Hot water System, and results of the investigation. Could be OK but could also be a possible recall. ( This unit not just fitted to Jayco vans )
