Hi I just bought the 57cm Jumbuck Black Kettle BBQ and my 17yr old daughter put it together, she did a fantastic job even the some of the screw holes werent drilled properly originally, we soon remedied that issue. Im about to use it for the first time, do I need to 'season it' first before cooking anything on it AND if so, how do i do this?
Thanks

I purchased a 57 Jumbuck Kettle and tried to use it like I would my Weber Kettle and in the indirect fire the coals diffused or went low under 45 minutes and thats having the vent on the lid open and also on the ash catcher but i did have the little plate sitting at the bottom hole of the BBQ ....why did the coals go off so quick ?

Hi Waratahbaby
I don't know where you can buy a replacement grill from but I am don't use the grill that came with the Jumbuck and you can have it if you like.
I now use a circular cast iron grill which I purchased in Hornsby NSW many years ago.
Please let me know if you are interested

You should ask Bunnings if they can order one in for you. I've done this with another product that that sell where I broke the part.

There are 2 methods of cooking on kettle BBQs.......direct or indirect.
Direct cooking is when you place the food on the grill directly above the fire AND indirect is when the food is placed on the grill away from the fire.
I suggest you visit a BBQ store and have them show you the metal cradles used for holding the heat beads in kettle BBQs.

Suggest you set the fire on the lower cooking rack using metal cradles for holding the heat beads etc in place.
The bigger BBQ outlets should have the cradles.

I have used a Weber kettle bbq which is deeper than the Jumbuck. How do you do an "indirect" method for roasting? Do you have a recipe book?

Hi Tricia
I have not had any problems cooking indirectly using my Jumbuck however I don't just load the bbq up and leave it unattended.
I check out what ever I am cooking more often then I should which is a bit of a no-no letting the heat out.
I enjoy this style of cooking so much I tend to "over sample".
As far as recipe books go, I like to experiment and that is more fun.
Tricia, don't take it too seriously
Cheers
Chris

Have you got any vents open? To keep the charcoal burning, you need to make sure that there is oxygen flowing into the kettle. The vents are what you use to control that.
