Not Worth Spending
We bought this as our baby had really bad reflux from Bellamy's infant formula. Its same price as you can buy full tin of formula. It was keep blocking the teat of feeding bottle. Our baby really struggle to drink milk out a feeding bottle & baby also got upset stomach. Will not recommend for sure.

Not a happy baby
I decided to try thickener as our daughter was quite a vommity baby, I put it in one of her bottles and it did stop the vommiting and made her sleep solidly for 7 hours but unfortunately the next day she was a screaming constipated baby, very out of sorts. I made it up using half the recommended amount too so have not and will not use it again.

Big change in bubs reflux from first bottle.
After my Bub was diagnosed with cmpi and reflux we were put into Neocate which seemed to help some symptoms but his reflux was worse on it being such a thin formula. We decided to try the feed thickener before medicating with losec. What a difference from the first bottle he settled no vomits and seemed content which is very unlike my little man. Early days but we are happy so far only use 1scoop to start with and seems fine.

Horrible product for my child
I guess with anything this will work for some and not for others. This product actually did work for my 5 week old in terms of reflux however the complications that came with it were not worth the benefits. It first gave my boy diarhea 2-3 times a day surrounded by pains in his tummy that were so bad they made him scream and screach, turn red all over, lips trembling and crying for half an hour. After ringing the aptamil helpline i spoke to a midwife who was actually very helpful in terms of advice for reflux babies and suggested to lower the d...Read more
osage and gradually increase it over a two week period to allow his body to get use to it. Well after continuing to use it it gave him constipation (pellets) and more diarhea and pain. I don't know anyone that would want to watch their baby go through that much pain for 2 weeks just to get him use to it.1 comment

Great idea but didn't work
I can't understand but all infant formulas are so liquidly made that it's hard to feed babies who often regurgitate. The idea to thicken breastmilk and formulas is pretty awesome but my baby didn't like it. He definitely refused to take it in gel form and tried to vomit it all. It was tricky but I tried to thicken formula and it resulted in strong constipation to my little son. And be aware - it contains sugars (2.3g per 100g) and sodium (10.1mg per 100g). Unfortunately it doesn't work for my bubba. Won't buy again

Works well once you establish correct dose for your individual situation
Like anything with babies, this took a bit of trial and error. Yes it gave him diarrhoea and yes it made him constipated but once we got the ratio right its been great. We add 1 spoon to 130mls formula and he now drinks comfortably and burps reliably. It can clog the teat if you don't mix it in well enough though. I prefer this to changing formula as I can tailor the dose to suit his individual needs

Works well
This stuff is amazing. It allowed me to continue breastfeeding my very colic'y and reflux prone baby without the hours upon hours of crying. It's not the easiest stuff to use and trying to syringe it into a tiny bubba is tricky. But if you can get it in it works wonders.

Might work for other babies
Ive used this as my baby had reflux so I tryed to thicken bottles, breastmilk and formula, and it didn't sit well with my baby. I noticed it may have stopped the reflux but it made my baby constipated wich was a nightmare after two-three days. But I do like the idea of there being something to help thicken breastmilk. It just didn't work for my baby but might do wonders for another baby.

Constipation galore!
I bought this product to help with my baby's reflux, which it did... but the constipation it caused was worse... her poo looked like little balls on the minimum dose. There was no happy medium, it was reflux with no product and constipation with the product. Won't buy again. C
And no warning on the product, which I feel is misleading to the consumer.

Great!
I use this with nan li formula as I have a bad reflux baby. Doesn't constipate him. Easy to prepare. I only use half the recommended dose and it still works great. Baby loves the taste would definitely recommend to anyone with a reflux baby. Cheap and easy to use

Causes sever constipation after 2 days of use
My bub is 5 weeks old and suffered from reflux and spitting up. I was recommended to try this formula, I found it helped reflux but caused severe constipation to point my bub was going red in face and in pain trying to poo and her poos were like solid marble balls after just 2 days of use. Would never recommend this and now my bubbah has blood in her poo from straining I'm extremely upset.

Highly recommended for reflux babies!
Easy to use(I use just one scoop with every feed as baby is on reflux meds too)
Better alternative to AF formulas which can be too thick & requires teat changes.
1 tin lasts me two weeks (may vary depending on dosage)
If you find your baby choking, struggling with wind pain etc.. than I highly recommend this!

Good for reflux babies
Good for thickening formulas for reflux babies. Don't have to change formula to anti reflux formula. Easy to prepare.
Cons
Caused runny poos in the first 48 hrs after introducing thickener. Poo with every feed. After 48 hrs - 72 hrs it changed slightly towards constipation. So I used half of recommended dose so constipation got better. But use recommended dose depends on the severity of baby's reflux or swallowing difficulty.
Might need to use stool softeners or lactulose if constipated for more than 3 days.

Helped my little one
I finally started using this when Bub was 4 months old, he was already on Losec but still vomiting after every feed of S26 Gold, and it was suggested I try thickener. (Bub was happy and putting on weight so doc and pharmacist said not to change formula)
I really wanted to avoid constipation and tummy aches, so I started slowly, with only half a scoop in 2 out of 6 bottles having thickener added for the first week, then 3 the next week, 4 the following week (no thickener added for his midnight bottle) and it worked really well.
I now add about 3/4 of a scoop in each bottle and he is going really well, still some small vomits but nothing like before.
Highly recommend trying it if you are having vomiting issues, but introduce it slowly!

works for the spit up but constipation an issue
I added this into my babies s26 lactose free formula as he has reflux and I wanted to see if it would help and he wouldn't bring up as much. I gave him a couple of bottles with the thickener in and true he didn't spit any up but in the morning he woke up screaming his head off. He was straining really hard and trying to poo, when he did go, solid little balls were in his nappy. I then stopped using the thickener that day and just gave him the formula without to see if it was the thickener making him constipated or the formula as we have had a f...Read more
ew issues finding a good formula for him recently. Anyways he slept and when he woke up i found him smiling, checked his nappy and no hard little balls.. so i think it was probably the thickener making him constipated. works to stop the spit up but then you get the constipation so maybe it will work for others but unfortunately not for us.1 comment

I use this to thicken my smoothies and soups and it is amazing. You can't taste it and it works like a dream. Cup-a-soup with vegies and thickener becomes a meal in a cup. Awesome. Watery smoothies becomes thick and filling. Great for weight loss. You don't need cornflower you just need this...

Didn't work for me
My baby has acid reflux and nothing seemed to help so I thought I'll try to thicken his formula and breastmilk as well. I got Aptamil thickener and for the first few feeds it was fine and then my baby started to have really bad diarrhoea. He wouldn't be able to finish his bottle and will start having diarrhoea in between (and this is every feed!). When this started happening it also stopped helping with his reflux and he started throwing up as well as pooing so Bub constantly started to get hungry. I've stopped giving this and now have started with rice cereal. All babies are different and I'm sure this product has worked for other parents out there but unfortunately not for me.

Works great for my bub!
My bubby had reflux. Had tried 2 different AR formulas and both gave her diarrhoea. Changed to lactose free formula but refluz started again. Added thickener and it made an immediate difference. Bit of trial and error when it came to figuring out the balance of enough thickener to stop the chucking but not too much to clog the teats. Occasionally have an issue where it clogs the teat but i just run hot water through the teat or swap to another one. Using 2 scoops per 120ml of formula. Also use MAM anti colic bottles with size 2 teats for my 2 month old. Definitely glad my doctor suggested this thickener!

Questions & Answers
Abiasked
Hi I’ve started using the aptamil feed thickener for my 6week baby since last Saturday for reflux as per Paediatrician recommendation. I’m breast feeding and giving expressed breastmilk. I have been told to add 1/2 scoop of thickener to the volume mentioned on the container ie 1/2 scoop (2g) to 100ml of expressed breastmilk.
While the frequency of vomiting has reduced, she still does vomit between feeds and so I want to know if there is anything else I can do?
How long do I need to wait before giving the expressed breast milk once the thickener is added?

Hi Abi,
You can add more or less as required to control the reflux. The Aptamil feed thickener does not have any nutritional content, so you can add as much or as little as needed. You can feed baby once the bottle has been prepared as it will continue to thicken to it's optimal thickness in the stomach, however you can also try leaving the milk to thicken for a couple of minutes. There are other options for using the Aptamil Feed Thickener with breastfeeding so feel free to call our Careline on 1800 438 500 if you would like to discuss. Kind regards, Saskia
Thanks for the information :)
