Save your money, go elsewhere.
The Centre's renovation a few years ago ruined the front entrance, produced a stale spin room, doubled the gym size but made it like a cave with no atmosphere, and the group fitness room was badly designed. The change rooms desperately needed upgrading and weren't. Now there are very few friendly staff around, they are too busy taking IQ classes to help anybody in the gym. Most of the equipment is old and the new cardio equipment is garbage. For $55 a fortnight they are kidding themselves. What made the Kew YMCA a great place was the friendly staff and clean, user friendly facilities, not anymore. It appears that they are cutting costs with staffing and spending on things few people use, like the IQ Studio.

School Swimming Program
It's a waste of money to let my son having school swimming program here as they didn't organise the students into the proper and suitable group according to the students swimming ability. It's better to spend that money to have a small group swimming lesson in others swimming lesson.

Cycle classes are excellent
I only do cycle classes there and rate them highly. Don't use the pool so can't comment on that. The change rooms need an upgrade though.

Worst swimming lessons ever
Took my daughter for swimming lessons....completely useless. We had attended templestowe and she loved swimming. At kew she lasted a whole year stuck on the same grade and they managed to turn a 7 year old who was confident and loved swimming into someone who fought not to go. Thanks you losers. Do not bother. Any other program would be better.

Hate it
Have a pool membership but no longer go to Kew Rec Centre as kids allowed to jump and 'bomb' deep end of pool, meaning people like me who like to do gentle exercise get splashed and have little room. Signs saying no diving or jumping, but staff do not enforce. Now use Hawthorn pool where staff do watch out for inconsiderate users and enforce rules. Also don't like the changerooms and prefer to go home in wet bathers when used Kew. Not a problem at Hawthorn which has clean showers and change rooms.

Inconsistency
We visit the Centre 8/1/17 morning & was told the slide doesn't open till 12.30. Well... it was class to 15 min later when it was open because the staff had no sense of urgency in doing their jobs. The lifeguard casuall presented while kids lined up waiting. Not the first time.

Ugh don't bother!
Facilities are dirty (bathrooms and mouldy and get filthy during the day). Very poor customer service - they made a mistake with my booking and barely apologised. One to avoid.

DISAPPOINTING
Since this is a council run centre, you would think it would be one of the best. Yet their rates are considerably higher than other centers and they don't have the appropriate facilities to meet the public's needs. Even more saddening is the fact that their extremely high prices, means that 'physical activity' is less likely to be seen as a necessity but more as an indulgence.

aqua aerobics
If you are thinking of joining the Kew Rec. Centre to do a 9.15 aqua class, think again. You will be squashed into 3 lanes and the class is limited to 18 people. Many regular partipants have been denied entry to the classes in recent weeks despite arriving at the pool well before class starting time.

Redevelopment is a downgrade - shame KRC & YMCA
Yes, absolutely true. I have never seen so many disappointed and angry members, the Goup Fitness Program has been relocated to an upstairs room, losing easy toilet access, equipment storage, appropriate sound, lighting and air con. KRC cannot even acknowledge member dissatisfaction, nor do anything to address real issues. In their attempts to appease members they sought their vote on stage location, then despite most istructors requesting a certain location, they accepted the participants opinion and placed stage against majority of instructor...Read more
s votes. What is their priority?? Spin room also is appalling, needing the glass windows removed in the first week as it was so humid, water was running down the walls!! It is still a very noisy echo chamber. The Booroondara Council, KRC and YMCA responsible for project clearly lack people that truly understand group fitness and spin room requirements. Unbelievable.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

New centre all about looks rather than what members want
The recent "redevelopment" at Kew Rec is more about how the new facility looks and the publicity this creates rather than whether there's any improvements for members. The new group fitness room is a complete joke, despite KRC stating they've had "significant positive" feedback (on a supposed forum on the KRC web site which is not a forum in the proper sense of the word, members can't respond), the vast majority of members dislike the new room and have expressed their concerns at a recent meeting - not one had anything positive to say about it...Read more
. It's clear little, if any, thought was given to how the new facility would be used, other than it's clear the objective is to stuff as many people in as possible. A great example of this total lack of thought was that music from the new group fitness room now disturbs local residents, so much so that in the first opening days the police were called to KRC to stop the disturbance. Perhaps council/YMCA/KRC could do something different and listen to what the members want - fat chance that... nothing to recommend the "redevelopment" it's all about looks, not functionalitySimilar opinion? Excellent
I love having Kew Recreation centre so close to home. There's something to do for everyone and I like the family group fitness classes so I can take my kids.
Always clean, staff are friendly, programmes are great. Huge variety of things to do from yoga/pilates to weights and swimming.
I wish they'd have supervisors so kids can swim while parents go to the gym.

Good
I chose Kew Recreation Centre because it is close to where I live. While membership costs slightly more for me than Richmond Recreation Centre, it is open more hours per week. The heated indoor swimming pool is only 25 metres (Richmond is 50). I like that there seems to be less chlorine in the Kew pool.
I find the availability of equipment in the gym is usually good even at busy times, and the gym staff have always been helpful and willing to provide workout programs that suit me. Often there seems to be no available staff members in the gym ...Read more
