Love this car
Easy to drive, Apple car play is simply the best, so user friendly. Easy to make calls when driving, use the maps, listen to podcasts etc. Only downside is the car doesn't have a lot of go. Great for zipping around metro areas, not that great going up hill or on the road.
Purchased in August 2021 at Kia Dealers for $22,000.00.

Everyday car
Good for everyday use and long smooth road driving. Fuel efficient running to a vacation trip but with its ground clearance, load capacity should be lesser than the limit to run normally.

Good until repairs needed
My partner bought me a second hand Kia Rio 2004 sedan about 3-4 years ago with about 120,000 km on the clock. Was a great little car at first, very quiet engine, could not even hear the engine idle sitting at traffic lights. But then things started to happen. Had to replace left side CV joint not too long after it was bought, it now needs replacing again, then the radiator fan died (overheats extremely quickly), the alternator died last year & will be replacing it again in a few days. The drivers side back brakes locked up on me & left me stran...Read more
ded in the middle of nowhere for a few good hours, when I went to replace that particular brake pad, it was in about 20 pieces - no wonder why it locked up on me!! I have problems with the door locks, they seem to lock themselves sometimes & then its sometimes almost impossible to unlock them, drivers side window leaks something shocking, struts are leaking, am going to to the timing belt as I would not have a clue when it last got replaced. One thing gets replaced, then something else goes wrong. Engine runs quite warm but that is to be expected from the little space under the bonnet. This is one of the worst cars to do any sort of mechanical work on, nothing on this car is simple & easy to fix. Replacing the alternator was horrible, not looking forward to doing it again. Hard to find parts, car not worth buying expensive new parts either. It is a gutless car on any sort of incline, but awesome on fuel economy, driving on empty lasts for ages, plenty of boot space though. I would not recommend buying a Kia to anyone, cannot wait to get rid of it, will be putting it in a Demo Derby then burning it to the ground.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Underpowered piece of crap
Got it as a loan car when my car is due for a new airbag. The automatic one is a piece of crap you need to use manual mode if you want better pickup on hill. The fuel consumption is terrible as well. I would say at least Toyota Echo and Daihatsu Sirion are better than that.

Becoming annoying
Purchased my top of the range Rio SLi secondhand in January 2022.
Dealer agreed to replace the tyres as they were badly scalloped and noisy. Thought it was strange that a car with only 17,000kms would need new tyres. 7000kms later my tyres are starting to get noisy again. Took it to my local tyre centre and was told my rear tyres are scolloping. He advised me to take it back Kia and get the rear end checked for any issues.
Also have an ongoing issue with a rattle in the front passenger door which has already been looked at twice with no probl...Read more
em found. My tailgate doesn’t latch properly unless you slam it. This has also been looked at with no fault found. Fuel consumption is not the best either. Uses almost the same amount of fuel as my wife’s V6 Aurion! Considering selling it but the resale value is terrible. No wonder the previous owner sold it after 1 year of ownership. Good points : looks good in metallic black, comfortable leather seats, climate control air and auto wipers.Purchased in January 2021 at Mazda for $15,000.00.

I love my little car BUT
I have a 2018 Automatic Hatch. Bought brand new. Great features, great on the fuel but my only disappointment would be the engine noise. A couple months in, noticed a loud ticking noise at idle and also speeds between 15 - 40 driving slowly eg 50km road with roundabout. there was a loud rattling noise, people travelling with me asked about it so it wasn't my imagination. Sometimes very loud. I took it to Kia who couldn't diagnostically find anything wrong with it but their research showed other buyers had had the same problem and they sug...Read more
gested using 95 or higher fuel. So yes the high fuel worked but annoyed that I should have to get the higher fuel. It's a brand new car and shouldn't make such obvious engine noises. So.... disappointed on this point. Also sometimes, after accelerating a little then taking foot off a bit it does surge.Purchased in April 2021 for $17,000.00.

great first car
could not of asked for a better first car. she stuck by me through thick and thin, I definitely did not treat her right, typical female andeverything. not sure how I managed not to blow the engine up. came close, twice. just wish I had been as kind to her as she with me, as I could not afford the inevitable surgery she needed from lack of service and cheap dodgey repair work

Amazing little car
Bought my Kia brand new and the features that I got with the car make it one of the most affordable small cars on the market with the most features. Only 4 speed with auto so can get a little slow at times, but overall a smooth and quiet drive with lots of comfort
Purchased in March 2021 at valley motor group.

Great Little Car runs on the smell of an oily rag
Brought this car when it was around 5 years old and since then, just spent the usual on a car.
Wipers
Timing Belt at correct intervals, but looked new when removed.
Tyres
Oil
Air Filter
Front Bearing(a bugger to replace though. if your mechanically minded like me, take them off yourself and get the bearing replaced at garage otherwise mechanics want a fortune to do the job as usual)
Fuel economy is unreal, 40 litre tank and 700klms, not sure it that's possible, but drove here in Victoria(Australia) from Port Fairy to Melbourne and back and fuel light was on at Warrnambool, I guessed there was at-least 5-10 litres left, drove 596....Read more
Very low to the ground, so when you go to sit in the car, you just drop to the ground,, get a good cushion if your average height like me. Can tow a small trailer, weighing total weight of around 900kgs OK. Its a front wheel drive and no good on slippery hills in the country, real steep ones, on grass. Doesn't like steep hills, travel up in 4th gear.Purchased in February 2021 for $2,300.00.

Good little car minor problems but good
I bought this to save some money on petrol... think it was about 17k we had it almost 4 years and it was always serviced on time alway cleaned and polished... it was kept absolutely mint....
decided to sell it and get a bigger car (not Kia) one yard didn’t even want it as a trade on a 40k car... so while they are a good little car there is NO resale value for them, same year Corolla holds it value far better...

Would be nice if it didn't conk out from time to time
I like the Rio, it is light on fuel, drives smoothly etc.
The only problem with mine is that sometimes stop dead, engine conks out and refuses to restart for 10 or more
minutes. It would be OK if it was a simple as taking it to the mechanic and getting them to read the engine diagnostics, but no, no engine light, no diagnostics. So it's just a matter of replace this, replace that. Is it the fuel pump, is it the immobiliser, is it the crank shaft sensor? Who knows, but spend lots of money getting the mechanic to change each and everything it might be.
So yeah, good car, but not happy with the lack of diagnostics for what is clearly a significant issue.

Wont buy Kia again.
Kias seem like an ok car but unfortunately they do not last. Once youve done about 100,000km everything starts to go wrong. Air con and windows are first to go then you're up for couple of grand repairs at least every 6 months. Better off getting a japanese car. They last a bit longer.

Good first car
I bought a second hand Kia Rio JB Sedan from a private seller when I was a university student and kept it for about 4 years, mainly for commuting to and from work. It is a good car to buy if it's your first car as it's economical to run and has enough space for adults at the back and a large enough boot.
The downsides of this particular car was that the paint started to wear out even though it was garaged every night and the seats are not that comfortable for long drives. Eventually, I upgraded to a bigger, better car.

Love This Hatchback Car
The most compact and reliable car I ever had. I got brand new my car from the dealership and since then I haven't had any issue. Just minor changes as any other car. I used my car on a daily bases. Very economic in petrol, wear works perfectly. Space and comfort is great. I have used many time to make my move outs and surprise everything fits (except the mattress and bed frame) Highly recommended model and brand!

Love it!
My Kia Rio is a great little car that is light on fuel and drives very smoothly. It has been used every single day for the past 5 years and is still going well. The battery that that the car came with lasted for years and only had to be replaced recently. I did have a couple issues with the car as the air con and electronics I.e. the buttons did not work. This took 3 years to sort out. The mechanic that we had to go through to retain our warranty was horrific and Kia was very unhelpful to resolve the situation. Numerous mechanic visits and figh...Read more
ts to avoid being charged for the same problems that my new car came with, my car is finally working as it should. I will definitely purchase a Kia again however Kia needs to work on their customer service skills and ensure their mechanics are actually doing what needs to be done.Similar opinion? Great to drive
Our Kia Rio is a great sized car for us. We are able to use it as and when we like, small enough to park but large enough to take friends or family with us. Cheap to run and we love being able to play our music via the radio as well as having the ability of Bluetooth.

The Kia Rio is a great little car! I use my to drive to and from work and run errands around town, it’s such a smooth drive and really enjoyable to drive. I use my car every day and only have to fill my tank fortnightly! If you’re looking for a cheap car to fill this is the car for you. Only needs servicing every 10,000ks and never have I experienced any issues

Questions & Answers
Pabloasked
2013 SLS 6sd auto. What is the maximum size I can fit to my 17in rims. I am thinking 215/50/R17 to lessen road noise and smooth out the ride.
Jimasked
Hi all,
I have a 2009 Kia Rio. Only got 70,000 km on the clock. recently, have found if the car is cold (I.e. been sitting for a day or two without being driven), when it is switched on, it is really, really hard to get into gear - I.e you have to shove it into gear with some force, and at times it makes grinding noises to go with it. Once you get out on the road and drive for a couple of minutes though, it all goes away and the car is fine.
Anyone got some suggestions as to what the problem may be, before I send a mechanic on a wild goose chase?
Cheers
Jim

Needs the clutch adjusted, or the cable has stretched abit...
Thanks Johnny, much appreciated. Not sure whether you know, but can you explain why it only occurs when the car is cold but is ok once it warms up? We wondered whether there might be a sensor or something playing up, but happy to take your advice on it so that we can get them looking in the right spot at the mechanics :)
